What would you ask Richard Chycki?
« on: October 07, 2020, 11:26:16 AM »
I have an interview with Richard Chycki next week. Obviously he's a pivotal figure in DT and Rush history, and the conversation will be focused on that, but if you have any questions for him, feel free to send them to me!

How would he compare working with JL when they were in Winter Rose together to how they work together when recording JL's vocals for DT albums now?

What are some good stories of JL that he can share that are not known to the public, both from the distant past and more recently?

What became of Winter Rose after JL joined DT? Did they try to continue on with another vocalist or did they fold at that point? What about the rest of the band (as I recall only seeing the photo of Rich and JL in the sleeve of the officially released Winter Rose CD)?

How has JL changed over the years both in terms of personality and vocal techniques?

How did he go about moving from being a musician into working in the studio?

What kind of stories can he share about working with Rush?
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Thank you!!! I want to ask him about roles in the studio. Some producers are producer/engineer and know the steps to get to the sound they're listening in their head, while others are more like producer/producer, and are simply looking at the end result. He worked with Aerosmith and Mick Jagger too, so there's lots to address!!!

Have he and James sat down and listened to Winter Rose in the last 10 years? What are his impressions looking back at that time?

At any time since James left Winter Rose, did they consider working together before A Dramatic Turn of Events? If so, did talk of that lead to James recording all of his vocals with him in Canada for ADTOE?

Thanks, and please keep them coming!!! A few more that I have:

 - Was there any kind of direction from the Rush camp about the remixes of 2112 and AFTK - as in "we want this or that side of the music to be more apparent, warmer etc.?"

- What is his approach when it comes to remixing old albums like that, in order to preserve the legacy of the band, whilst also bringing something new to the table, which is worth paying for?

- There's a whole mystique about bands recording in one take and/or with all members of the band in the studio at the same time, and there's a feeling that things are more "authentic" that way. What's his view on that?

 - Could you change your name for something easier, so that it's easier to find more stuff about you on Google?

Why does that sound like the title of another David Spade movie, along the lines of Joe Dirt and Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star?

Rich did an stellar job in the studio producing, mixing Pyramid Theorem's Beyond The Exosphere album.

I would ask Rich:

- How much fun he had recording PT from an independent label, the potential & vision he saw in elevating the group to new heights, the opportunity to work with PT again.

- What other projects he is currently working on

You can ask:

-Not many people may be aware that Sebastian Bach was the original singer of Winter Rose before he left for Skid Row and was replaced by James LaBrie.  Do you still keep in touch with Sebastian?

Great one about Pyramid Theorem. Their new album is really a massive step in quality.

Why did you fuck up DT12

Stand down Kotowboy. Go to your corner and take a breather.....

That said, on D12,  I would like to know what the thinking was asking MM to tune his snare lower than how he normally tunes it. I'm pretty sure that was a JP ask but maybe he has some insight.

Thanks, I was also curious the other artists Rich has worked with, if they got the chance to hear the PT album. Any feedback Rich got in return like from James LaBrie, etc?

I will think of a sensible way to address Mangini's drum sound. It improved A LOT on D/T, but here and there we find relapses...in the beginning of Pale Blue Dot, the snare sounds like a MIDI sample!!!
