One of those guys about whom "well, I wasn't really a fan of their music" doesn't apply. He transcended that, because I guarantee you someone whose music you DO like ties off directly to Ed.
He's a guitar hero, a guitar legend, and yet I would still say he's probably a little underrated, in that he was so much more. Writer, producer, tech innovator, performer... that he will undoubtedly be known as much for his feuds as with his achievements is sad, but I saw him twice, and both times were something special.
I saw the opening night of the first Roth reunion tour - in Charlotte (and got a wave from Valerie!) - and at one point he just sat on the edge of the stage and played, and it was probably the best part of the entire show. The piece was an amalgam of a couple of the instrumental bits on the records and I honestly could have listened to them all night long.
When Prince died there was much made of his "archive" and all the music that he made for himself, with no intentions of anyone hearing. I suspect that Eddie's will dwarf that. He himself has claimed he goes in and noodles for hours sometimes without any intention of writing or performing, and I would hope that sometime, somewhere down the road, Wolfie decides to share that trove with us.
