I chose 'other' so I pick The Power To Believe. It was one of the first Crimson albums I checked out when it was still "the new album" at the time. I loved it then, I still love it now. I also think it's one of their best albums, up there with ITCOTCK, LTIA, SIBB, Red, and Discipline.

"Red". My top three is one album from each decade , with "Thrak" and "Discipline" being the next albums on my list.

I can’t really pick a favorite except to say that the John Wetton era Larks- Starless- Red is my preferred KC. Not to say that the other stuff isn’t also downright amazing. Discipline was my first ever full KC album, even though I’d already heard bits and pieces of the first two albums with Greg Lake.

I think I’d go with a top 5 of:

1. Red
2. Beat
3. Islands
4. Discipline
5. Starless and Bible Black

I really like about half of it and don’t care so much for half of it. But Larks’ Toungues II is my favorite of that series of songs.

Red. It's just so damn menacing. There's not a second of it I don't like (yes, I like Providence, though I'd prefer if the last two minutes hadn't been trimmed).

Red
LTiA (in fact I have a tattoo of the cover art)
Discipline
TPtB
TCoL

If not for TPTB, this would be my answer.

Poseidon...it’s just got everything I like about the band

By itself it is a great album, of course, but it doesn't bother you that it's almost a carbon copy of ITCOTCK?

Is it not possible to put all of their albums in the poll?

I usually have one or two albums per band I like best, but when it comes to Crimso, I can't pick one. They all (all!) have amazing moments. I usually come back to one single album by them and just listen to that one for days before I go on to listen to another one because they are all so unique.

So... I'll have to pass on this poll!

It's between Court, Larks, & Red for me, but imo Red has the most raw emotion put into it, so I'll go with that one.

A few months ago I might have said Starless & Bible Black, but some of the improvs on that album are a bit too experimental for my taste.

Edit: Actually no, Starless & Bible Black is still my favourite.

i haven't heard a ton of KC but Red is definitely my fave of those i have heard. it's like they took everything that worked about their debut and refined it (and still added an unnecessary, boring jam session song but, not as tedious of one, so, ehh)

So, I would honestly pick either Radical Action to Unseat the Hold of Monkey Mind (2016) or Meltdown (2018), but since those are live albums, I guess that's not an option. Still I voted for 'other (name it)'

From their studio output, I think I would pick Red.

It's completely possible. He just decided to stop at Discipline for *some* reason.

For me, I voted for the one with red on the cover.

And the song with the lyric "Starless and... bible black!" is not in the song entitled "Starless and Bible Black", or on the album entitled "Starless and Bible Black".  This is in keeping with Fripp's oft-stated mindset, that Crimson isn't a band as much as a state of being.

Yep, also confusing! And that song isn’t called Starless and Bible Black, just Starless.

Which makes it that much more difficult to pick out a 'favorite' King Crimson album. It's all one big stream of consciousness.

I voted Discipline but it was a really hard decision. It could have easily been Red or ItCotCK. The three are masterpieces.

For me it's ITCOTCK. Every song is just so monumental (yes, even Moonchild).

Could definitely understand the votes for Red as well though.

My favorite KC albums are more of the "era" that they were released than an absolute one favorite album.

-The Power to Believe
-Thrak
-Discipline

Absolutely, do, but if you hear one and are turned off, don't necessarily give up the ghost.   They are the exact antithesis of AC/DC; to me, "Discipline" and, say, "Islands" might as well be from two entirely different bands.

Yeah, there’s a whole lot to explore, and each lineup resulted in a unique sound. I’d recommend Red as the next step (You have to at least hear Starless), then maybe Discipline to see if you like that side of the band.
