Doh, I also forgot about Fernando Perdomo, who is most likely one of my 5 most listened to artists in the last few years.

I can't really pick a definitive top 5, but here's a list of favorites from the 2010's.

I'm like Stads... no idea how I could decide on Top bands *right now*.  What's the definition of "right now"?  Today, this month, this year, past few years?

All time is easy:

1. Zeppelin
2a and 2b. Rush/DT
4. Ayreon (and related projects)
5. Avantasia

With Floyd being a very close 6th.

Nowadays, it changes from year-to-year if not month-to-month.

That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Gun to your head, fill your music device with ONLY five bands, this is all you will be allowed to listen to for the next 14 days.

Which are your picks?

(It's a good way as any to find out  :D)
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Yeah, I went with loosely "this year" and also with "what bands I always put on if I don't know what I want to listen to".
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Well, in that case I fall to my knees and cry.   :) :) :)

For me, in that scenario:

1. Neal Morse
2. Oasis
3. Cheap Trick (maybe Night Ranger)
4. Ozzy Osbourne
5. Pink Floyd

Definitely tough.

No particular order:

Dream Theater
Neal Morse
Snarky Puppy
Punch Brothers
Miles Davis
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Well, in that case I'd HAVE to pick UFO and MSG so that I can keep up with TAC's thread!   :lol

I mean, I could pick any number of 50 bands to tell you the truth.  I'm always jumping around.  But for shits and giggles, since there's a gun to my head, and since they all have a release coming between now and end of year:

Teramaze
DGM
Lords of Black
Pyramaze
Fates Warning

You recommended me Electric Castle from Ayreon; I ordered it months ago and it's been held up in Germany (thanks Obama COVID!) but I got notice it was released for shipment.  Next week "Ayreon" will likely be on my list instead of Cheap Trick or Ozzy.

I've been stuck in a musical rut lately. Not veering from two of my favorites for quite some time.

1. Metallica - Honestly this year has been non-stop for me listening to these guys. They lost their "favorite band" status around 2003 when I discovered Dream Theater, but this might be the most I've ever listened to them. Lots of live stuff, including Metallica Mondays on youtube throughout the year, and lots of Hardwired.

2. All things Neal Morse - Dipped a bit since quarantine and Metallica Mondays started, but recently been getting back into Neal by revisiting the Morsefest releases, including this year's a couple weekends ago. Not to mention the Flying Colors live album and Sola Gratia both being released earlier this month.

Other than that, nothing gets more than one listen before it's back to one of these two artists. But this thread reminded me that Nightwish has recently come out with a new album, so I'll have to check that out.
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.
WELP.

In terms of current listening habits, I would say

Haken
IQ
Odd Logic
Tom Waits
Very early and old Sub-Pop era Seattle grunge. (Green River, Mudhoney, pre-major label Soundgarden...etc)

I just got the Green River remaster, with both the expanded Rehab Doll and the expanded Dry As A Bone.    I can take or leave Mark Arm's vocals after a while, but musically.... I miss the days when the creative nucleus was Jeff and Stone.  GR, MLB, TOTD (even though there was a fair amount of Chris in that) and the first... say, two Pearl Jam records were there and on point.    Now, PJ is Eddie's (and to a lesser extent, Mike McCready's) band, and it's not the same, nor, in my mind, as good.
