I came across this picture tonight online, and I couldn't stop looking at it.

Not sure I've ever seen Phil look so young, and Schenker sporting some Ace Frehley style top.

I’ll be honest, all these UFO/Mogg-Way songs are now becoming a blur. But the two opening tracks on Chocolate, Muddys Gold and Jerusalem are good stuff.

Chocolate Box is a grower. I liked it straight off, but I find something new everytime I listen to it.

UFO has a huge discography. It's daunting if you're not familiar with it already. I totally understand that. I experienced something similar with Orbert's Jethro Tull Discog Thread. I wasn't familiar at all, but I really wanted to get a guided tour through their music. I've always been kind of intrigued by them.

But there were definitely albums I liked more than others, and I am totally revisiting them after this thread is done. This thread will live on, so if you ever want to go back, and read the conversation about each album, you'll have it.

I'll post an update tonight as to where we are and what's coming up.

Wow, my physical copy of Chocolate Box showed up this morning. Guy on Discogs rated it at Near Mint, but it's Mint to my eyes. I can see no issues on the disc at all. Even the jewel case is in perfect shape. This was a nice score.

This is a good show.  Doogie is great on these old tracks and MS is on fire.  This Michael Voss that for some reason just came out for one song was really good too.

Update!

I just wanted to let everyone know where we stand. Tonight, I'm going to post the next Schenker album, and a Mystery Album. I was going to post them on Friday, but I was sensing a little fatigue. I've thrown a lot at everyone and I appreciate everyone hanging in there.

As far as UFO goes, we have the return of Michael Schenker for 2 albums, and then the 6 Vinnie Moore albums. That's it. So we're about to round 3rd and head for home.

I will say that Michael Schenker is particularly productive from 2000 on. I'll continue to post his albums, but listen to only what you want to. There's also a couple of Pete Way albums I'll be highlighting and a solo album from a certain singer. I will not be covering the upcoming Waysted albums, however. I don't think so anyway.

I'll hold off on Covenant until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Just to give everyone's ears a break.

Released February 11, 1999

Michael Schenker-Guitar

MSG's next album is The Unforgiven. I remember at the time getting very favorable reviews. This is a really good album. I think Rude Awakening isn't a great opener, but pretty much everything that follows is excellent. I've warmed to Kelly Keeling's voice over the years. He is damn good, but I think he still lacks some of the personality in Michael's other vocalists. He has an almost Coverdale quality to his voice.

Michael Schenker-Guitar
Keith Slack-Vocals
Kelly Keeling-Vocals
Shane Gaalaas-Drums
Barry Sparks-Bass
Wayne Findlay-Keyboards/Guitar

Recorded at Palo Alto, CA in early May of 1999, this live album has an amazing setlist. The band is rounded out by Barry Sparks and Wayne Findlay.
Although Kelly Keeling comes on for a half dozen or so songs, the vocals are handled by Steelhouse Lane vocalist Keith Slack.*

This album's setlist speaks for itself. Drawing on Schenker's entire career.  The inclusion of songs like Pushed To The Limit, Assault Attack, and Another Piece Of Meat is fantastic.

Vinnie Moore-Guitar
Shane Gaalaas-Drums
Barry Sparks-Bass
Wayne Findlay-Keyboards/Guitar

Basically recorded at the same gig as Michael's Unforgiven Live, Vinnie even uses Michael's band. Of course, Shane Gaalaas plays drums on The Maze, which was the album Vinnie was touring.

Last week, Jason mentioned going to see this tour and Vinnie had used Michael's band. That's amazing, but also great that the two had toured together. As you'll hear in Vinnie's own words in an upcoming post, this pairing was actually um....instrumental to him joining UFO.

@Jason, is this the show you saw?

The Unforgiven World Tour live album is excellent, and it gets regular listens from me even after all these years. I don't really have much to add beyond that, but if you're a MS fan then this album is a must have.

A few songs into Choc Box and pretty good.  Although, I wished they kept the heaviness of the first 2 songs going.  Jerusalem is an absolutely amazing song.

Every time I try to catchup, work gets a little nutty, and I don't get the time to have solid / dedicated listens.  So, I'm over a decade (in discography years), 3 weeks, and 11 pages behind.  But, still chuggin away.  So, to bring it back a few albums, I think Making Contact is where I last left off in posting my thoughts.

Making Contact
BBAL had some good moments, but the vocal melodies were so bland. Diesel ... meh. Fool for Love... much nicer. Tasty bass licks. I get what Kade is saying about the guitar “bends”. Really like the backing keys during the solo. Great track. Excellent opening arpeggios to When it’s Time to Rock.  Over all pretty good, dragged down by the chorus. The solo / instrumental section is fantastic. A most of the others were enjoyable enough, with a recurring theme that the instrumental/solo section was the strongest. You and Me was a nice ballad, but just a little too fluffy. By and large, I tend to be let down by keyboard dominated ballads. The solo was glorious, but overshadowed by the lack of edge to the song overall. I actually rather enjoyed Push, It’s Love.

Built To Destroy
Yup... straight from the opening vocal line of Rock My Nights Away, it’s the second coming of Dan McCafferty. And Im not digging the keyboard led sound of this track. Naturally, there’s a good (albeit brief) solo. Gonna Make You Mine ... the guitar tone in the solo is putrid; keyboards overall are terrible. This song is shyte. Dogs of War solo slayed.  Got me all hot and bothered, and then quickly went back to the mediocrity of the rest of the verses (I did enjoy the chorus).  Systems Failing was rather ordinary, with an extraordinary solo and outro (I’m sensing a theme here).  Memo has a ripper of an opening, and slays right up to that weird keyboard line at 1:30... then we’re right back at it. Good tune there. Still Love That Little Devil was a decent rocker.  Red Sky was a definitely one of the better/best tracks on the album. Straight forward, but the vocal melodies were strong, and Barden wasn’t as garbled/raspy as he normally sounds.  Oddly enough, I liked the lead riff much more than the solo. I would have really liked Rock Will Never Die ... if not for the ‘lull’ moments. When it was rockin, it was ROCKIN.  Ironically, the lulls almost killed the tune for me.

I skipped Vices, and went straight to the Waysted EP.  But did slip a listen in to Night of the Wolf with everyone fawning over that on. Glad I did. :2metal:  regarding the EP, Nice opener.  2nd song... this is nice ... borderline glam metal as JJ stated. Rock Steady was .... steady. Cinderella Boys started kinda meh, but the 2nd half was dope. Ball and Chain was ... solid.

Misdemeanor
First 10 seconds ...  whoa!  Rest of the song .... Is this Night Ranger?  One Heart ... still with the Night Ranger vibe, with a side of .38 Special. Not bad tunes, but sure as shit not what one would expect from UFO.  Night Run has a bit more edge, but just a bit (The US mix was a little more pleasing). So far, I’m thinking this is to UFO what GUP is to Rush, and I wonder how the hell Tim can like any of this. The Only Ones... man, it’s only getting worse. This is awful. And I love 80s (power) ballads. As I hinted above, I don’t know if I’ve ever liked when a guitar-driven hard rock band does a keyboard driven ballad. All the worst ballads are keyboard led - When It's Love, Love Bites, Is This The Love ... all blow chunks.  Oh thank god for Mean Streets. Still a bit of a wuss song, but so far, it’s like being the tallest person in a room of midgets. Name Of Love starts nice, but treads too close to the 80s AOR vibe. But man... dat solo!!! Blue was nice.  Heaven's Gate had a nice edge to it.  Wreckless was decent, aided by a great solo and outro (the former having some length to it).  The overall 'tinny' sound of the whole production really brings this song down in particular.  It's literally making me cringe here.  The Chase... ugh, is this an outtake from The J. Giles Band??
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

I WISHED.   :) :)

I'm going to be checking out Chocolate Box this afternoon, work permitting.

About The Unforgiven World Tour album:
As a big fan of The Michael Schenker Story Live album, I think this one is also truly great, if not better, specially because of the singer that is better than the two (if I'm not mistaken) that divided the vocals on Story Live. The setlist is like a shortened version of Story Live, which is understandable, since it's from a tour promoting an album. Great recording and amazing performances of the entire band IMO! Only 3 songs from Unforgiven, but they were well picked. Pilot of Your Soul and Fat City are excellent and both have that amazing style of Schenker's riffage.
I didn't know about those Vinnie Moore albums with Shane Gaalass, I'll check them!
So, Shane (I think also Barry) recorded with Schenker, Malmsteen, Moore and Kollman from mid 90's to 2000's... great portfolio!

I didn’t like Unforgiven at all. Not that the songs were bad, they weren’t, but I couldn’t stand the vocals. Too Glenn Hughes-y for me.

Vinnie Moore is my favourite guitarist ever so looking forward to these.

I knew the name Gaalaas was familiar to me in some way, he played on one of my fav Malmsteen records, Magnum Opus.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

So I listened to Chocolate Box.   I think I have to give it another listen.   I can see why I SHOULD have liked this better than Edge, but... I didn't, and I'm not sure why.  The guitars were grittier, and more...  traditional, but they lacked character, and they didn't seem to fit the vocal.  There was one point ("This Is A Life", I think) when I thought "wow, that almost sounds like Van Halen", and yet the vocal was this growly English slice of life.    And I'm a big Mogg fan, I think the only criticism I've ever given of him was the silly "on with the action!" affectation on... "On With The Action".  But here... nothing seemed to grab me.  There was no moment when I said "oh, I have to google what he's singing here!", which is what normally happens.   Also, his voice seems way more gravelly, growly.  I like it when it's a shade more reedy.

I did like some songs; Jerusalem is excellent, as is Living And Dying.   I liked Sparkling Wine (even if it was a little too much "Little Wing" in the guitar).

I think I owe it another listen.   At first plus, this seemed to me an album looking for a direction.   (And bear in mind I've been listening to Covenant and Sharks lately, so there's that to compare it to).  But it may just be that I didn't catch it the first time.
