I hopefully should have my UFO 10 CD collection by Friday!  :metal

Even paid extra for express shipping to get it quicker! (Also got the new Redemption live CD/DVD, the latest Crypt Sermon which I'm loving and a few new caps (Maiden, Priest and Sabbath)).  :metal :metal :metal

I haven't heard Keep The Faith since it came out. I don't know what to make of that comparison. I'm gonna be pissed if I listen to Bon Jovi this morning. :lol

Dry County is a great song and the solo is cool, but yeah, Sambora was an average guitarist.

From what I've heard, that's easily his best moment.

Turning Japanese  :metal

Kade, if this dude can do it, so can you!

Pretty decent.

I'll find some time to try and learn it.

I can play the rhythm parts but never attempted the lead - I just can't cop other people's solos.

Gotta start with something way more simplistic than Rock Bottom mate.

Yeah - I can play Living After Midnight with solo
Always been more of an improviser.

Learning solos note for note has always been a fault if mine.  Learn the memorable licks but impro in between for the most part.

I don't know. Not feeling High Stakes right now. It just seems......there to me. Nothing seems to be standing out. Archer's playing is nice, but nothing is really pulling me in. I just came out of listening to the first 2 Waysted albums and this just seems like a let down. I won't say it's bad. It's just there. I haven't heard anything that makes me want to come back. This might be a grower album or something I need to revisit down the line in a different headspace.

In 1993, Michael would release the first of four acoustic albums, all under the Thank You title (TY, TY2, TY3, TY4).

Personally, I think this is fantastic, even though it's hard for me to get through it all in one chunk. But I can drop the needle on any of the tracks and love the shit out of them.

Walk On Water

Released April 14, 1995

1. A Self Made Man
2. Venus
3. Pushed To The Limit
4. Stopped By A Bullet (Of Love)
5. Darker Days
6. Running On Empty
7. Knock, Knock
8. Dreaming Of Summer
9. Doctor Doctor '95
10. Lights Out '95

Phil Mogg-Vocals
Michael Schenker-Guitar
Pete Way-Bass
Andy Parker-Drums
Raul Raymond-Keyboards

The return of Michael Schenker!!!!

In actuality, Phil and Pete had been negotiating with Michael even before High Stakes came out. As usual, it came down to money.
Michael, not being happy with what Phil had done with the UFO brand would sign a deal with Phil in that unless they were involved together, the UFO name could not be used. They shared the name 50-50.

The band, which now also included Andy Parker and Paul Raymond, did a string of warm up dates in Germany in December 1993.
They then commenced, with producer Ron Nevison, to record Walk On Water.

Originally released in Japan in 1995, it actually didn't see a US release for a couple of years. I have included the Japanese cover (on the left) and the US cover (on the right) above.

The band did tour the US in 1995, with Simon Wright on drums, as Andy would return home to help run his family's business.

However towards the end of the tour, Michael, who thought he had a day off, caused the cancellation of a show in California. The tour fizzled as subsequent shows were cancelled.

I mentioned the US tour.

I love this album, and Dreaming Of Summer is one of the best UFO songs in the catalogue. I'm going to give it another listen tomorrow while I'm working, but it's a strong offering, in my opinion.

I’m falling behind in this thread. :P

I’ve never heard Ain’t Misbehaving or High Stakes and don't see them on Spotify. I listened to Borderland on YouTube and quite enjoyed it. Will listen to more when I get the chance.

I got to see this tour at The Newport Music Hall (same place as my earlier MS story) in (I think) September '95. The album was on sale at the t-shirt booth, so I was able to get my hands on it before a lot of folks. The track order was different than the USA release with Stopped by a Bullet being moved to the 7th slot. Also, Doctor Doctor was the only "additional" track. I didn't hear the updated version of Lights Out until years later.

Dreaming of Summer is top tier UFO of any era, and I hear some similarities to Love to Love.

This album also features my favorite guitar tone/sound that I've ever heard.
All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again

It’s too bad this album didn’t get a proper release and would have been ignored for the most part. But that just seems to be the story of UFO. I knew Self Made Man from before and its  :metal

This album sounds like the band is rejuvenated and yes, Dreaming of Summer is a beautiful tune

Oh, acoustic albums...... I may finally have hit a roadblock.

I'd never heard them until last week and they are excellent. We all need something a little mellower now and again. They are worth a listen Kade.

I played Walk On Water last week and loved it. Toughened up the riffing for a UFO album. And Michael is back. This could become one of my favourite UFO and favourite Schenker albums after a few more spins.

I've fallen behind a bit since I haven't even heard the McAuley Schenker albums yet, but I did check out Ain't Misbehavin' today. Once again, the verdict is that it's not bad, just generic by UFO standards. I'm not sure there was a keeper there, but there's been a lot of jams in the 80's discography I look forward to revisiting on my second go-around (Night Run is a recent example).

High Stakes will have to wait just a little while longer for I couldn't wait to hear Walk On Water again. Now this is much more like it! The band sounds great and the material is strong and delightfully heavy. Schenker's clearly the MVP here; his tone is godly and he is off the chain, firing off licks for days.

Our debut album "Eläimys" is a trip I can whole-heartedly recommend to anyone into Pain of Salvation, Opeth, The Mars Volta, Magma etc.

About Walk on Water:

One of my favorites (almost interchangeable, from grade 9.0 to 10.0) UFO albums, with the songs at a very high and homogenous level. But I would highlight all the A-side (a bit more, A Self-Made Man, wonderful) and the AMAZING A Dreaming of Summer. The one thing that I really wish more about this song is a extended guitar solo at the end, at least one more minute. Why fade-out so soon?
My minor complaint about the album is that I think Pete Way is just there and Andy Parker does sound like he was retired the last 10 years. That sucks out a bit of the great energy of the compositions.

Ranking:

OBSESSION (my favorite)/MECHANIX- 10+/10
FORCE IT/NO HEAVY PETTING/LIGHTS OUT/ THE WILD THE WILLING AND THE INNOCENT – 9.5
MAKING CONTACT/WALK ON WATER – 9.0
PHENOMENON/HIGH STAKES & DANGEROUS MEN – 8.5
NO PLACE TO RUN/? – 8.0
MISDEMEANOR/? – 7.5

Main riff reminds me of Slayers War Ensemble and then there's a Metallica style riff in the middle haha.

I had Anthrax cross my mind for some reason, just for a brief moment for a specific riff. Clearly, we were hovering around the same ballpark. That song is all over the place from a style perspective, and I like that.

Finished Walk On Water. Yep, this is a keeper. HUGE improvement over the last record. Guessing this Schenker guy might have something to do with it. So far, I think A Self Made Man is my favorite after one listen.

As Dreaming For Summer starts I was thinking, "Oh nice, a faster/heavier Love To Love". Wonder what the reason was for the self-plagiarism there.

I wanted more songs like the opener though.  I'll listen to this a couple more times.  Shenkers tone all over this is incredible.

Shenkers tone all over this is incredible.

I like how he does so many different...not sure if techniques is the right word, but he does so many different things in most of the songs. Has very layered parts. It's one of the things that I've always thought was cool about him. He sort of composes, as opposed to writing and playing. His parts are composed. Layered with acoustic, electric chords, lead notes. Please forgive the novice terminology.

Regarding Andy, wouldn't you chalk that up to production, maybe? I mean I hear what you're saying, especially compared to what Aynsley Dunbar does on Covenant. I don't have a problem with Andy on this record honestly.
