The "ask the audience" lifeline was always fraught with peril for a lot of reasons. First, the audience will inevitably be roughly half-filled with...well...let's just say folks of below average intellect. Second, some percentage of the audience will seek to troll the contestant by intentionally giving a wrong answer. Third, depending on how much hemming and hawing the contestant did beforehand, the audience will be swayed to some degree to pick the options that the contestant has pointed out as being likely. That last one also applies to the 50/50 lifeline. If a contestant has spent two minutes debating between options A and B and then uses the 50/50, the computer will inevitably leave him with options A and B.
The scary part is that that that's apparently NOT a doctored photo, and the guy actually had to use a lifeline for that one.
