Heretic's Song Roulette v2
---
Alright, I haven't done this since like, 2013, so I'm a little rusty.
Submissions:Send me
two songs from a particular band. Try to pick two songs that give a good idea of the band's overall sound -- and maybe choose two different dualities of their sound as well -- for example, if they play death metal, maybe an crushingly heavy song, paired with one more melodic, or acoustic. Any track length is fine.
I am subscribed to both Spotify and Apple Music (thanks Verizon), and also can utilize Youtube or Bandcamp as well if that is necessary. Sailing the seven seas is also an option if something is just absolutely unattainable without it.
Sign-ups: I really dug Rich's format of no eliminations, so I'm going to borrow that. Everyone will have a chance at winning, with a points-based system. Each song will be scored 1-5, so points will be tallied up that way. The one with the highest point total at the end, obviously, will win. Bold, I know. I am also allowing any number of participants -- I would love to discover some new favorites, so come one, come all. I will keep sign-ups open for at least a couple of days, and hopefully I have a solid number of participants by then.
Schedule: After sign-ups, I'd like to try and stay on a week-based schedule. Have everyone send their tracks within 3-4 days, give me the rest of the week to listen and write-up my conclusions, and then post the results and do it all again. However, this is my first semester teaching a college class as an adjunct professor, and it can be pretty stressful, so I might have to bump that up a bit. We will see. If you guys have any recommendations on how you'd like to see the roulette scheduled, let me know, I'm open to doing this so everyone can have fun and hopefully discover some new music themselves!
Overall there will be
8 rounds, something that I've seen a few others do, and it seems to work quite well.
Musical taste and interest:Sputnikmusic says I've rated 1112 albums, so a decent chunk. If it's progressive, or if it is metal, chances are I
might have heard of it. Take a look at the link to my Sputnikmusic profile below, and see if I've rated or listened to something before sending (if you do send something that I've rated / heard but is not on the banned list below, that is fine by me -- it means I probably need to give the artist a second chance. I've only chosen artists to be banned that I have great familiarity with their work.) My favorite music usually has one of three things: outstanding melody, powerful composition, or is evocative of emotion.
My music taste is pretty open. My favorite genre is, of course, progressive metal, but I am absolutely a sucker for melodic black metal and melodic death metal, as well as folk metal, post metal, and thrash. I also absolutely adore post-rock, and hip-hop and indie are genres that I love quite a bit as well. I've recently really gotten into some synthwave / dreamwave stuff like The Midnight, Gunship, and FM-84, so anything along those lines will probably really resonate with me. I am not a fan of grindcore, and hardcore really varies -- some stuff I enjoy, but nothing really has wowed me. I am really not a fan of most country music (some of the old OLD country stuff is okay, not the newer pop-country blend that permeates the airwaves).
I also am usually more of a fan of modern stuff -- not many of my favorite bands come from a time before the 90s, despite really enjoying some classic work. However, feel free to try and persuade me to enjoy an older sound if you'd like. Also, free to submit something you think might go AGAINST my taste, if you think there is a potential for changing my outlook of that genre, or just maybe it stands out enough from the genre that I'll like it.

bolded and
italicized the artists on the banned list who are among my absolute favorites, so you might be able to come up with something based off of that.
