The Rudess Experiment - VIDEO - 9-9-1994
« on: August 04, 2020, 04:48:58 PM »
Ran across the video linked below last night. It was Dream Theater performing at the Concrete Foundations Forum in Burbank, CA on September 9, 1994.  The description says that "This was the first show with Jordan Rudess as a temporary replacement (he wasn't able to commit to DT yet and did not become a full member of the band until 1998"

I remember reading about this concert in the Lifting Shadows book but hadn't seen (or heard) any of the footage. JLB is ON FIRE in this!!! Anyway.....

Very cool this footage, especially because of the sound quality. This show was right before James had that food poisoning that affected his voice.

Well, not *right* before that incident. They also did the North American leg of the Waking Up the World tour before the incident, too. It was while he was on vacation before the Japanese leg that he got the food poisoning. While there's no soundboards in circulation from that leg, there are some great audience recordings as well as a radio broadcast from Denver, so there is other documentation of JL's performances from that time period.  :)
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Cool, I forgot about that American tour still in 94.

I taped the first two shows of that tour. The Berklee show was really cool. Those early shows included TOWHTSTS and Innocence Faded  before they were dropped.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

They played it without keyboards. I guess they figured Derek had enough to learn, so they were played as a four piece.

God damn, it's Angus Myung.

I don't think I ever saw this video. I've had the audio for almost 25 years but I don't think I ever found the video.

Ah, the show where Yngwie set his guitar on fire before DT's set, causing the entire place to be evacuated and delayed the show.

I have a homemade bootleg of this show with a different mix with the keyboards dominating the mix.  I think I downloaded it from Caught in a Worldwide Web back in 1998. EDIT:  Correction, I just pulled my old cassette and the mix is almost identical (since the stereo mix features the keys shifted heavily to the left speaker, my version was likely sourced from a computer that favored the left speaker).  The puzzling difference is that my cassette version is sped up almost a full step higher than originally recorded.

It is strange to see JM and MP in this video and to compare how they behave on stage today.  :lol

Love this full show with Derek as well: Dream Theater - Live at the Warfield, San Francisco 1994

I put on Lie when I feel the metal need to break my neck headbanging to something.

To me, the Awake tour was the best era with Derek.
It sounds like, "ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk." Instead of the more pleasing kick drum sound of, "gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk."

I honestly don't think I've ever seen the 94 Warfield show. I had the 93 show way back in the trading days.

Think I only have a handful of shows between '94 and '98. Wasn't my favorite live era of the band in general although there were some "especially special" shows during this period which I needed to get.

Am I in the minority here thinking those screams of James from this era are just.... not pleasing to the ear?

I really miss the live jams.

I love the ones that are embedded within a song that add a new twist over the standalone jams but they're all fun.

Never liked them either. Also wasn't a fan of the twirling hair from that period.
