SN's Homestuck roulette: jpeg hero (final results)
« on: July 25, 2020, 12:00:11 PM »
Hello friends, I have decided to succumb to peer pressure and run the kind of roulette all the cool people are running now, in the hopes that it will fool others into believing I am cool.

FORMAT

Submissions are in the form of a number of songs from a single artist, totaling 20 minutes or less in length. 20 minutes (20:00) is a hard limit; if you send me a submission one second over 20 minutes you will be publicly executed I will ask you to resend. Note that there is no maximum number of songs, as long as it is under the total length requirement. You can send a single song if you want, as long it's under the maximum length, and there's no need to force submissions to reach 20 minutes if you don't have the songs for it. The minimum submission length is 1 second I guess, although I'll go ahead and say a submission like that will probably not receive an ideal score.

Right now I'm thinking there will be 9 rounds, although I may adjust that down if each round ends up taking a long time. There are no themes or requirements for submissions other than the ones outlined above, although there will be STRONG recommendations down in the TASTES section. Did I just stick an advertisement for one part of my post in a different part of my post? Yes. You can't stop me.

RULES

Any artists on the banned list cannot be sent at all. There are other artists I've heard a few songs from, but am not familiar enough with them to ban them outright, and those artists are free to be sent provided you don't send one of the songs I've already heard. So, for instance, if Stadler decides to join this roulette and wants to risk sending KISS, he can do so but he can't send 'Rock and Roll all Nite,' because I've already heard that one. Listing every song I've ever heard so people don't accidentally send them sounds like a fucking nightmare, so we're just going to assume it won't happen often and when it does, I'll just let you know and you can swap the song out for something else.

Submissions can be in the form of youtube or spotify playlists. You can also send me files directly if you need to, although that should be a last resort because it sounds like a bit of a pain.

Scores will be between 1 and 10. I will refuse to use decimals in this scoring scheme unless I decide to stop refusing to do so.

There are no eliminations in this roulette, so send whatever the hell you want with wild abandon. There aren't any prizes, either, so really, what the hell are you losing?

TASTES

So I liked The Walrus's idea of the lead-free roulette to avoid the more typical prog metal submissions, but I don't really want to filter out metal entirely, because I love metal. I do, however, want to strongly caution against prog metal. There's a ton of that stuff on my banned list, because I listened to a ton of it years ago, and while I still enjoy a lot of my favorites, I very very rarely find anything new in that mold that excites me at all. So, don't send it. At this point I'm not going to reject submissions, but you're likely to get a pretty weak score and hopefully that will be sufficient deterrent.

So enough about what I don't like. What do I like?

Interesting question.

I love metal. I like pretty much all forms of it, death, power, melodeath, metalcore, etc. etc. and so forth. Metalcore and tech death are two genres in particular that I've been really into lately and finding a lot of stuff I enjoy.

I also like a lot of indie music, from almost invisible stuff like múm to something more rambunctious like Modest Mouse's most energetic moments. I love really good post rock, although I find the majority of that genre to be perfectly pleasant but mostly uninspiring. I like bits and pieces of pop, rap, jazz, etc., but haven't explored the genres that deeply so far.

I like a lot of just straight-up weird shit. I mean, I'm a guy who listens to Devil Doll and unironically thinks it's amazing. I'm not going to say I'll like anything weird that you send me, but it's generally unlikely that the weirdness itself is going to be offputting for me.

^ Is this helpful? Maybe, maybe not. If in doubt, you can always just ask me how I feel about a given genre or artist and I'll try to give a useful answer. Ideally I'd like everyone to be pretty adventurous in their submissions in this roulette, because the main idea is to get me into music I wouldn't have found without your help. Does that mean submissions outside my wheelhouse will necessarily score better? Well no, but they will earn my respect, and isn't that worth more anyway???

Participants

Finally. After reading through all that shit up there, your moment has arrived. Your time to shine. Your opportunity to add your name to the list of daring explorers diving into this morass of bullshit. You could walk (or sink) among them. You must act now. You have no other choice. Sign up now.

There's no limit on the number of participants. All are welcome here!

BANNED LIST

Note: Even though majority of these are groups that I like, not all of them are. This is a list of groups I've heard enough material from to feel like I've made up my mind on their music one way or the other. And as I said, it leans heavily towards progressive metal, but don't use that as a guide because it will lead you astray.

I'm glad you like East of the Wall so much that they're on your banned list twice

I have a frankly ridiculous number of artists to select from here so I'm gonna try to only send the best of the best (4/10)
i don't know what it says that there's been like a dozen artists i was tempted to put on the list and then didn't and then going through comparing my picks to the banned list almost every single one of those artists was already on the banned list anyways lol

I assembled the banned list from several sources into a spreadsheet and then ran a sort script, intending to go back and eliminate redundancies but I forgot I meant to do that. Whoops. Ghost Brigade was on there three times.

Should be fixed now.

Maybe not that huge but mine's way bigger than expected too. In this for sure.

Also I welcome this as the new definitive roulette format; the only reason I wouldn't do it for my own is because I don't have enough time to listen to that much music each round

I'm also such a goddamn trend-setter, apparently. I did the first album roulette a few years ago, and now my up-to-20-mins-from-the-same-artist format is taking off as well.

EDIT: Oh and yeah I'll definitely send you the hangman spreadsheet later this evening!

And as I said in Katt's roulette, I'm delighted and honoured to be copied.

I’ll play if you’re up for pretty much whatever (I should be able to avoid Prog metal pretty easily).

Hey fellas....

BANNED LIST

Note: Even though majority of these are groups that I like, not all of them are. This is a list of groups I've heard enough material from to feel like I've made up my mind on their music one way or the other. And as I said, it leans heavily towards progressive metal, but don't use that as a guide because it will lead you astray.

I love this format so hooray Rich the Trendsetter  :tup I was also gonna take a roulette break but this is very fun.
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.
