You’re comparing it to previous rounds?

They’re ‘better’ in some specific sort of way?

"Elite's song" could refer to Overhaul, in which case Elite would be the winner.

Final Round Results
Final Round Playlist

Stadler: Rainbow – Fire Dance

First Impressions:
This song is better than Stadler's song.

Final Thoughts:
I totally get where you’re coming from with this one given how relatively well Alcatrazz did last round, this is pretty much a continuation in the similar vein, or at least in the guitar work and  general hard rock/heavy metal style I hear the similarities. Though this one is a lot more uptempo.

I think a consistent issue I have listening to this is that the bass is both really loud and yet hard to actually hear. The entire song seems swamped in a layer of reverberating bass that drowns out the guitars and vocals a lot of the time yet I could hardly tell you what the bass is actually playing, so it’s almost like there’s just a constant loud, low hum throughout the song. I don’t like how it sounds, essentially.

In all other aspects this song is… fine. I’m not as hot on these vocals as the last song, the dude sounds like he’s really struggling to emote and only barely hitting his mark, but it’s better than missing it entirely I suppose. The guitar lines are noodly and pretty catchy but it feels like there’s really just one line that keeps repeating with minor variations. All the solos throughout are pretty standard though pretty fun too.

I dunno, my biggest issue with this is that the things I like about it were done better in your previous submission, and unfortunately the submission this reminds me of the most out of all of yours is the G/Z/R track I wasn’t too keen on, though this is a step above that one for sure. I don’t really mind this but I’d have a hard time saying it’s a song I’m going to remember much of either.

Elite: Eldamar – Spirit of the North

First Impressions:
This song is better than Elite’s song.

Final Thoughts:
This is a black metal act that seems to have a bit of a confused identity. The first thing in the song is spacey synths that make me expect some kind of similarly spacey black metal sound… which, they do deliver to an extent, my first impression on listening to this was “oh, they sound kinda Midnight Odyssey-ish” but then that gives way to more obvious folk metal sounds using that same spacey texture and I’m left wondering if they really knew what they wanted to do at all?

Like, okay, comparing it to Midnight Odyssey suggests that I would like how this sounds. And I do! I just don’t think this does a ton with it? The vast majority of this song seems like it’s driven by one of the two different synth leads that repeat throughout, with the occasional riff-driven moment to break things up, but it never feels like it’s going anywhere, just cycling through different moods without building or transitioning well. It’s enjoyable music but not especially strong as a song and there’s definitely not enough substance to sustain 15 minutes here.

I also wish it got more intense more often? Part of the appeal of the best of black metal is the roaring, blast-beat and tremolo driven peaks and this pretty consistently stays mellow and slow-paced – there’s the occasional shift to a triplet feel but even then it’s not a very uptempo triplet feel. And it doesn’t really “end” so much as just… unceremoniously fade out. It kind of reminds me of the basic, repetitive post-rock I wrote in guitar pro a long while back. It’s almost black metal by numbers in a way.

For as much song as there is here I really don’t feel like I have a ton to say about it. It’s the kind of black metal where I’d listen to it once and enjoy it well enough but not really feel inclined to revisit it ever again. And yeah, I don’t really plan to follow up on the full album of this, I’ve got plenty of better black metal to choose from already, but this is like… fine enough for what it is.

Final Results & Winner

So it’s pretty obvious  that I’m pretty lukewarm on both of these – one of them doesn’t quite come together on sound and the other goes on way too long for how little substance it has – keeping in the tradition of underwhelming final rounds for my roulettes, I suppose!

But at the end of the day it’s pretty easy for me to pick between these two all the same, even without scoring. The song that at least works on sound for me is preferable to the one that doesn’t, which means the winner is…

(dramatic pause)

(keep scrolling)

(this is the last stopgap, I promise)

Elite!

Congrats! Stadler is now dead, also. You shot him with your own hands.  Good work. I hope your bloody victory was worth all this carnage.

Anyways I’ll probably start going through the albums I want to check out from this roulette in the next weeks and post first impressions on those. Not a huge number of them this time but this was a fairly lax and short roulette from my end so I’m cool with that.

Thanks for running this!
Still on holiday, so posting from a phone, but I want to commend you for your write-ups; they’re very well written and thorough.

I think that despite you not really liking this track, you might actually enjoy the rest of the album. I sent it because I thought it had some vague similarities to that Spectral Lore track you sent me once, but I must admit I’m not too familiar with that one.

Hurray though! :partyinpartyinyeah:

Good one, Elite!

Cyril, would the other song have done any better?

(For the rest of you, I have a rule: go with your first instinct.  I almost always follow that in my life.  Here, I had a song, I was committed, I wrote the submittal... and bailed at the last minute.   I'm more interested in testing my gut than comparing actual artists.)

(Gospel - The Moon is a Dead World)

Unsurprisingly, this is super cool. It's also very dense and complex and I definitely am a bit overwhelmed on first listen but they have a great sound, a lot of impressive playing, and riffs and melodies for days. Remains to be seen just how much this will stick with me but I'm pretty much already dead set on picking up a copy of this.

Also yes only just starting on these, there will be hopefully a lot more in the coming week or two. First impression-style of course.

(Steve Vai - Sex & Religion)

i didn't quite know what to expect here based on just the song i was sent and... well, a lot of it is more "normal" than that one but it really is just a slightly more hard-rock oriented version of devin's 90's output (with vai on guitar ofc). kinda interesting to see how this influenced his early solo albums for sure and i'm at least curious enough to want to revisit it but about half of it didn't really do much for me at all

(The Arusha Accord - Juracan)

It's really hard to pin down what their sound -is- honestly. There's some prog metal in here and some extreme metal and some hardcore elements too and it's all kind of all over the place. It's also a 23 minute EP but I'm probably gonna check out their 2011 album too? I dunno. This is cool but it's not cool enough to make me want to revisit it due to its brief length. I like albums, man.

this one i kinda had lowered patience for because i know i've tried to get into it before but... that production is just a huge turn-off for me, it's a bigger problem on other songs than it is on the one i was sent at least but still... i stopped after track 3 because i've been send 4 & 5 in roulettes before and the first three tracks were enough to convince me i didn't need to finish it anyways, oh well

not surprised but this isn't doing a ton for me on first listen, though there's interesting moments throughout. but, given my reaction to the song in question, i want to give this one at least a little room to grow on me still. some of the more -core-y bits don't quite work for me (thought we agreed pinch harmonics were uncool a decade ago, and the vocals will still take some time to get used to) and the spoken word interludes feel kind of unnecessary (though i've heard worse?) but it's overall... fine

honestly i don't know why this was on my listen list considering i only even gave the song the score i did because of its strong ending i only listen up through fall of logic because no i am not listening to 40 more minutes of this. this is just the kind of djent-prog that i literally lack the capacity to enjoy anymore. i have no energy left for this. never will have it again. oh well

kind of in that weird awkward spot between "i want to listen to this again" and "i know for a fact there's no way i'd want to listen to this many more times/buy this". it's uhh. just very solid but unspectacular prog metal with a death metal finish. not doing anything i couldn't get from other bands and the vocals are kind of subpar but all the same it's enjoyable, though not much else

well i don't think the rest of the album quite lives up to the first song here - nothing that's as accessible or instantly memorable, though there's still a lot here i like and i definitely want to listen to this again. uhh. the middle was probably the weakest stretch, a lot of short, aggressive songs that feel almost unfinished. the slower ending was maybe a bit anticlimactic too but i did like the song. dunno, i want to like this a bit more than i do

(Blaze of Sorrow - Absentia)

my impression on the song i sent is basically applicable to the whole album. totally solid. some nice lead guitar work. nothing about it really stands out otherwise though. it's not too long or boring, i get a decent amount of enjoyment from the music i hear, but it's completely lacking in any special qualities and doesn't even really feel like it executes especially well on the sound it's going for, which is already not a sound i'm that enthused about to begin with. perfectly fine

honestly it just seems like it's taking standard tropes from symphonic metal, djent, and prog metal, and just mashing them all together in the most logical and standard sound at the midpoint of the three. which is to say it's totally fine but lacking in any real surprises and considering i only find one of those three particularly compelling anymore i didn't have the patience to sit thru the last track of this after like 40 minutes of "yeah okay it's fine". nothing wrong with it tho if it's your thing

(The Contortionist - Clairvoyant)

i get why i wasn't into this at the time because it honestly isn't even a metal album. there's metal songs but like. only a few and the metal is never the focus, it's more on the atmosphere and the vibe, the layers of synth texture and nonstandard, watery grooves. it's barely even a songs album as i can't really imagine listening to any of these tracks out of context but the end-to-end experience is actually very enjoyable and i'm glad i'm circling back on this one, i dig it

i only have 3 albums left after this btw, round 1 had a ton of albums i wanted to check out, then rounds 2 onwards... didn't (admittedly because a lot of people got eliminated in round 2, but)
