Why are 18-year olds generally referred to as kids today?

A lot of adults(some of them are still young people and even only 30) called 18-years olds "kids" today. Why?
It seems that was not a case 30, 40 years ago. Then 18-year olds are not referred to as kids, but young adults.

Because they still are. Nowadays people are adolescents into their 40s, 50s, you know.  ;D

If 18 is dialed back to "kid", then 40-50 becomes "young adult".

33 now and I would say around 27 is the first time I felt like or would consider myself an actual adult and not a kid.

Because old fogeys like to try and discredit the opinions of young adults by suggesting they're only children. :P

I'm curious where you're getting this.  If I recall correctly, you're in your early 40s, so how the hell do you know how people were referring to 18 year olds 30-40 years ago?  I'm 52, so I was 18 years old 34 years ago (i.e., smack in the middle of your 30-40 years ago range), and I can assure you that folks referred to me and my peers as "kids" (as well as "young men"/"young women").
