No tracks are real in black metal, there's only trve and false :metardica:

There is only Battle Dagorath! The more I listen to this album, the more I enjoy it. And I've been listening to this album for years... :metal

I've been able to listen to a lot more music this week, so I'm comfortably on track with my roulette and finally able to listen to some other things a bit more. So I'm catching up on this thread.

Lunar Aurora - mixed feelings the result of which is an overall meh. I actually like a lot of the black metal stuff going on, it's pretty epic and the grand sections with harsh vocals work best. What I really do not like, at all, is the few segments that have choral-style clean vocals - the vocals just sound completely detached from everything else going on. Not just production-wise (which I could forgive), but musically as well, they just completely clash and it makes it borderline unlistenable for me. So a lot of the album is solid enough (if not the most exciting), but Gluck and Der Pakt are genuinely offensive to my ears. :lol

Now onto to Darkenhold which has been the best received so far, so hopefully more up my street.

EDIT: Ok yeah the Darkenhold is solid stuff. Much punchier and generally more exciting, although it's a little cold and not as richly melodic as I'd like or as much as some of the stuff I've been sent in my roulette. Overall I'd probably put in roughly on a par with the Omega Centauri from week 1 (maybe slightly better) as while I'm enjoying this style more, that had much more sense of atmosphere.

Week 6

Folk Black Metal

1. Гой, Роде, гой! / Hail, Rod, Hail!
2. Тропою неведанной / On the Unknown Trail
3. Невидаль / The Wonder
4. На моей земле / In My Land
5. Притча / The Parable
6. В цепях древней тайны / In Chains of Ancient Mystery
7. Ярило / Yarilo
8. Лики бессмертных богов / Faces of Immortal Gods
9. Коло Нави / Kolo of Nav'
10. Корочун / Korochun
11. Память / The Memory
12. Купалец / Kupalets
13. Аркона / Arkona
14. Небо хмурое, тучи мрачные / Sullen Sky Lurid Clouds

Between having one of the best female vocalists in extreme metal, the epic folkiness of the music, the variety of sounds and instruments, and a great balance between the folk bits and black metal, this album is a classic in my mind. The plethora of traditional folk instruments used on this album really make it sound authentic and bring a little something extra to the album to make it stand out.

Also I translated the song titles for you guys, since they are all in Russian. Evermind, feel free to correct my translations. :)

Sullen Sky :rollin

I think you mostly did good except it should be On My Land and I think I'd say the sky in the last track should be either sombre or heavy, it mostly means it's just full of clouds like you can't even see the sun and the rain will perhaps begin soon, I'm not sure "sullen" is the right word for that.

By the way I know these guys and even saw them live!

This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

I mean I liked them, but honestly I could name 10+ bands that were more entertaining mostly because it's not really my type of music. But it's worth the money though, if any of you have a chance to see them, go see them, they're great at what they do!

Right, finally getting caught up on this thread.

Battle Dagorath - not really for me. I dig the more atmospheric moments, but the metal (which is very dominant) is just not my cup of tea and doesn't have enough variety to keep my interest - it has that whole "white noise" thing going on and I just find it quite relentless and monotonous I'm afraid.

Arkona on the other hand, best of the thread so far! Absolutely love the variety, the balance of heavy, dissonant and melodic, and of course the folk elements. It's going to take more listens but this could be my first 4 star album of the thread!

i put this on while doing A Very Boring Repetitive Thing and it ended up interesting me less than the boring thing i was doing, which does not surprise me at all because I have zero expectations that i'll ever be the slightest bit interested in a full album of this style. i stopped after the 15 minute song because zzzzz

wilderun is more prog death that has folk elements to it! folk metal is where the fantasy dragon riding melodies are the entire point
the latest wilderun album wasn't folk at all anyways it was more symphonic  :P and i HATED their first album, which well and truly was folk metal (pirate metal tho not dragon metal)

Sorry for missing a week guys. As Ariich already knows, I've been dealing with a family emergency since last week. Long story short (and without getting into specifics that I would rather not at this time), things are looking better for now, but only time will tell.

Anyways, I'll be returning this thread from it's 1 week hiatus tomorrow at some point. Stay tuned.

Week 5

Atmospheric Black Metal

1. From the Black Sun's Fire
2. Phantom Horizons Beyond
3. Return to Gates of Dawn
4. Through the Rite of the Stars
5. Transfixion of the Spheres
6. Psychic Abduction

This album is Spacey, Atmospheric, Epic, with a bit of a coldness to it. Fitting for the subject matter really. It has a great layered guitar sound that feels open and yet distant, like it's literally coming from the vacuum of space.

OK, going to try and catch up.

The good news...this album has the most badass song titles ever :metal

The bad news...They only needed one of those titles because every song is the f'n same!

Not really a fan of this one.

OK, I just caught up! ;D

This is actually pretty good. Lots of the passages sound a bit samey, but each of the main 5 tracks hits some great grooves. On E Sturm, I wish it ended about the 7:30 area, as that last vocal part really didn't fit. I found it jarring.

The last song, Verfall is really awesome! I love where it went after the mellow part in the middle.

Cool album Pup!
