I'm behind on this but just checked out Omega Centauri and ehh. The production was better than I expected but that was about the only good thing about that record for me. The other good thing is the last song which was listenable. I guess black metal in general might not be for me, we'll see.

I need a break before I listen to this week's album.
That's the thing though. There is so much variety in black metal, you are bound to find something you like.  :metal

All great records thus far. None that I would claim as my top 10 in the genre, but all serviceable black metal albums. Keep 'em coming.

PS: If you happen to do a post for Hyperion's Seraphical Euphony sometime, shoot me a PM, I'd love to do a guest write-up for it. One of my absolute favorite black metal records. Also melodic black, so potentially more palatable for others in the thread :D

I kind of forgot about that album. When it first came out I liked it for the most part. I'll add it to the list, if anything just so I can have an excuse to revisit it

Week 3

(Atmoshpheric Black Metal)
1 Glück 11:07
2 Geisterschiff 7:52
3 Dunkler Mann 8:37
4 Findling 9:42
5 Der Pakt 7:55
6 Das Ende 8:36

This is an album I've liked for a long while. It was suggested to me in the metal thread over at the old Bethesda forums over 10 years ago now. This has a very Atmospheric sound, with touches of ambient thrown in for good measure. It's kind of like a cross between Paysage d'Hiver and Blut Aus Nord.

OK, made it through the first two tracks. The first one is really cool. Probably longer than it needs to be, but very cool nonetheless. I liked it.

The second song started off great, and I thought we were really on to something here, but it eventually lost me.

Looking forward to the rest though.

Yeah, that first track is awesome. The ambient nature at the beginning really gives it a hauntingly beautiful sound and lays the groundwork for the rest of the awesomeness on the album. I always have a hard time deciding which is my favorite song here, but if I had to pick it would probably be Findling.

Oh, yeah? That sounds completely awesome! Or it would if I know what the fuck you just said.  :lol

Probably won't get a chance to listen until Monday.

Finished Dunkler Mann.

I was getting a bit concerned, but from the 6 minute point on, I really like it.

Vocally, I hear a little Udo.

Findling….About 7 minutes too long. For the first few minutes I thought it was cool, but then it stayed constantly pointless until the end.

Well, I'm only through the first four songs. There are parts of all 4 that I really like.

The 2nd and 4th songs start off good, but never close the deal. Dunkler Man was the opposite. 2nd half is really good on that one.

OK, just finished the album. Der Pakt was pretty cool. I liked that song. Das Ende..well, I'm not sure. The vocals got really tough halfway through.

Allinall, I would say that this was probably the best album so far, or the least worst. ;D

I found the songs unnecessarily too long, with not nearly enough differentiation.

my take: i listened to the entire thing and felt completely neutral about it. better than the last one. not as good as the first one. it was the least interesting of the three though; very straightforward and not many surprises; i think every (or almost every track) started with the exact same ambient noises too lol. nothing really stood out but i'd listen to it again, at least

How'd you like it?

I know the songs are all on the longer side and may not move in as many directions as a lot of prog fans may like, but a major part of what I like about Atmospheric black metal is the almost hypnotic nature of the overall sound and this album very much works for me in that regard. Plus, I think the atmospheric ambient passages work extremely well here, despite what Cyril says  :)
