Anyone into world music?
« on: April 07, 2022, 02:45:11 AM »
Does anybody here regularly listen to world music? Music from what region of the world do you usually listen to? Personally I love different percussion music from the likes of Babatunde Olatunji.

Also, shameless plug, the album of my group is finally out on streaming platforms. Yay! We play music inspired by Filipino ethnic traditions mixed with some African drumming. Hooe you guys check it out.

yes, although I don't listen to a lot of it regularly, but I definitely do at times, and see a lot of it live.

In the last decade, I would look to Debashish Bhattacharya as maybe my favorite.

But your Shakti, Yousou N'Dour, Yo Yo Ma, Poncho Sanchez, Vasen, Hoven Droven, Bireli Lagrene, Ravi Shankar..

i guess it depends on what you refer to as "World Music" vs "Ethnic Music" or Jazz, Folk, Percussive, Blues from areas outside of North America and Western Europe?

A lot of it I would think is thought of from India or parts of Africa, but that's a generalization.

I would even put local Minnesota musician GREG HERRIGES music in this per he even wrote a music book titled "World Guitar" and combines a lot of Industani and other styles of music with his blend of progressive folk/rock of a kind.

I don’t listen to a lot of it, but I enjoy it now and again and like when artists incorporate non-western styles into their music.

One act I’ve enjoyed who probably don’t strictly count is Yaatri, who are more of a modern jazz/fusion act who incorporates some Indian elements in their music.

Yeah, the world music scene is really more vibrant in the live performance circuits rather than studio recordings. I remember performing in the 2000 Concert of Colors in Michigan and there is nothing quite like absorbing all the musical energy live.

This is always a musical area that's challenging to talk about because people have different conceptions of what it entails, and some dispute the notion altogether.  But to some degree it's a fairly regular part of my listening.

Historically I've been especially fond of a lot of Indian music, such as the Hindustani classical of Ravi Shankar or Ali Akbar Khan, the drone/ambient of Sheila Chandra, or the jazz/fusion of Shakti.

One of my favorite artists of any genre is Aziza Mustafa Zadeh, who infused more classical and opera into the Azerbaijan mugam jazz/fusion of her father Vagif.  She's worked with some of the heaviest hitters in jazz like Al DiMeola, Stanley Clarke, Dave Weckl and others, but is perpetually overlooked.

I'm a big fan of reggae, of course Bob Marley, but many other greats like Black Uhuru, Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear and others.

Anouar Brahem's Arabic chamber jazz featuring the oud is quite intoxicating.

Jazz and Latin music go together well, for example with Arturo Sandoval's work.

Paco de Lucia and other flamenco players are rather dazzling.

For that matter, Carlos Santana's work is indispensable.  Obviously the early classics are legendary for a reason, but I don't mind much of the more often panned later collaborations as well.

There's some absurdly fun playing in Bulgarian wedding music like Ivo Papasov.

So many others, but that's a good start.

I saw a band called Dehli 2 Dublin at a free festival in my city a few years ago and they were fantastic. That’s my only encounter with world music, but it was really enjoyable.

I think Steve Tibbetts' album "Yr" would be a good gateway album into world/exotic/Eastern music that isn't traditional, aboriginal, or classical. It has proggy moments.

or Ozric Tentacles early 90s albums if you only want to get your feet wet first.

See, that'd be the only way I'd enjoy it, seeing it live at some sort of festival. I worked many street festivals as a kid, and I saw all kinds of bands. Live music is awesome, no matter what the genre. Still, I wouldn't listen to any of it on my tape deck.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I think world music is a genre I could listen to once in a while. I’d have to be in the mood for it.

Anyone a fan of Shivkumar Sharma?

a friend of mine is kind of obsessed with him, and especially the stuff he did with Zakir Hussein whose probably best known for Shakti/Remember Shakti.

I actually have 1 of his albums "Santur : Inde du Nord," which is listed in my library per my rym page.

But I guess his most popular records are "Call of the Valley" (1968) and "Rāg Madhuvantī / Rāg Miśra Tilang" (1988) which was with Zakir Hussein.

He combines Industani classical styles with Western music, much like Debashish Bhattacharya. I wonder if they've actually collaborated. It wouldn't surprise me they have played together live at least.

Yes, Call of the Valley is a classic, also with excellent flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia.  Zakir Hussein has been a prolific treasure.
