Round 5 comparisons
Indicative and subject to change.
Comparisons are with the Round 4 score.
Ordered by Round 4 ranking (just the ranking for that round, not the total score).

wolfking v
Buddy v
Tomi v
Puppies v
Lethean v
Nekov v
Sacul =
Evermind v
Cyril ^
Luoto v
Train ^
LordCost v
Katt ^
jingle ^
romdrums ^
Elite =
Stadler ^
Shadow ^
Indi ^
lonestar ^
TAC ^
king ^

Some of the comparisons are marginal, others are large - so this doesn't really get across that there could be some more shifting around of positions again!

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.

Yeah, I'm screwed. Apparently "sending random shit strategy" works only when you avoid generic prog.

Re: ariich’s inclusive roulette (v6) – round 5 RESULTS
« Reply #1848 on: June 05, 2020, 10:20:48 AM »
ROUND 5 RESULTS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lethean – Almah
1. Trace of Trait
2. Breathe
3. Box of Illusion
4. Almah

First impression: Nice style but the hooks are lacking.

Final opinion:  Ok so first thing’s first, Trace of Trait is a cracking song. Really punchy, energetic, surprisingly intense at times. I like Edu Falaschi a lot from his time in Angra (the only era of that band I find particularly exciting) and it’s nice to hear his voice again in something else. The songs from the debut album, by contrast, are merely ok. Nothing bad, just not that interesting to me, really just sounding like mid-tier Angra. Almah has some really nice stuff in it, but the other two bring the score down quite a bit.

Score: 7.4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
LordCost – Cave In
1. Final Transmission
2. In the Stream of Commerce
3. Big Riff
4. Innuendo and Out the Other

First impression: Each track starts only ok but gets more interesting as it goes.

Final opinion: When you explained this band to me, how they developed over time, and the nature of this more proggy album of theirs, I found it really interesting. Unfortunately, I don’t find the music itself quite as interesting. I love that it’s quite dynamic and unusual, and there are some really cool moments, particularly as each song progresses. But experimental music is risky, and there’s stuff here that just doesn’t work for me. Big Riff is easily my favourite, the balance of intensity and melody is excellent.

Score: 7.5

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luoto – Noumena
1. The End of the Century
2. Everlasting Ward
3. Prey of the Tempter

First impression: Do I dare suggest that this sounds solid but unremarkable?

Final opinion: I had assumed that, as in rounds 1 and 2, this would grow on me loads, but it didn’t happen this time. Don’t get me wrong, I like it plenty, but this time my first impression feels spot on. It’s all very solid and I enjoy each listen. It has some nice riffing going on, and some thrashy elements thrown into the mix with the core melodic death metal style, which is an interesting combination. But there’s nothing here that stands out, either for being unique or for being particularly exciting.

Score: 7.7

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Puppies – Estradasphere
1. The Princes
2. Millennium Child
3. XQuiQ
4. Smuggled Mutation
5. Planet Sparkle / Court Yard Battle 1

First impression: I have absolutely no idea what is going on.

Final opinion:  I still have absolutely no idea what is going on. I like it though. I think. On balance.

Score: 7.8

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buddy – Dir En Grey
1. Vinushka
2. Tōsei
3. Inconvenient Ideal

First impression: I… don’t really know what to make of this.

Final opinion: So, I like this. I really want to like it more, but there’s something about it that keeps it only almost-great. The positives first. I love the moody vibe here. I love the variety. I love the intensity at times. I like that they sing in Japanese, given a lot of bands who play in what you might call a “western” style sing in English. But for all that it’s exciting and dynamic, it just doesn’t quite hang together for me and I find it hard to really *feel* the music. I think the production might be part of that – the clean vocals often sound detached from the instrumentation.

Score: 7.9

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
king – Freaky Jelly
1. Highest Ground
2. Nothing to Feel

First impression: Slightly cheesy in the vocal department but that doesn’t stop it being a lot of fun.

Final opinion:  This band are very obviously and heavily influenced by early Dream Theater. On the downside, they’re in borderline ripoff territory. But thankfully, they have a very fun and upbeat approach to it all, which just about provides enough of its own flavour. I’m not the biggest fan of the big cheesy high-vibrato singing here – it worked with JLB in the early 90s because he had so much charisma in his voice, plus, you know, it was the early 90s. :lol It feels a bit dated for a 2017 album. But both songs are still very enjoyable, talented prog.

Score: 8.0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evermind – Voices from the Fuselage
1. Meteorites
2. Nine Levels
3. Life on Titan

First impression: Another solid example of the genre that I’m extremely familiar with.

Final opinion:  This actually ended growing on me a bit. It is kinda generic I suppose, but it’s very nicely done and consistently good throughout. It has the groove that most djenty prog metal does, but it’s a little lighter and airier in tone. On one hand, that does mean it lacks a bit of punch. But on the other, it gives it a slightly more atmospheric feel which works well. So yeah, it lacks a bit of wow factor, but it’s very solid stuff still.

Score: 8.1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tomi – Stoned Jesus
1. I'm the Mountain

First impression: :hat

Final opinion: This is some very cool music. You described it as stoner/doom metal, and I guess I can see that – it’s very hypnotic in the way it develops slowly and has these almost droning riffs repeating. It actually reminds me of Tool at times as well. One thing I find interesting is how the song has vocals but these seem to have a supporting role really – it’s the riffs and the mood that really sit in the forefront, and it works surprisingly well.

Score: 8.1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Indi – Gino Vannelli
1. A Pauper in Paradise (3rd Movement)
2. Brother to Brother
3. Storm at Sunup

First impression: Madder than I expected, and all the better for it.

Final opinion: So I very briefly googled Vannelli when you sent me this, simply because I’d never heard of him. Google told me he was “rock‎, ‎soul‎, ‎soft rock”, and had had some hits in the 70s and 80s. From the combination of this and the photos of him (lol), I was expecting something pretty cheesy and middle-of-the-road. And that’s all there for sure, but also a lot more bonkers stuff too. Starting with a quirky, experimental prog instrumental certainly drove that feeling, I think. :lol But even the two more regular songs have a playful, jazzy experimentation to them. Very enjoyable.

Score: 8.1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elite – Messa
1. Snakeskin Drape
2. Hour of the Wolf
3. Tulsi

First impression: Really cool music, possibly let down slightly by the production.

Final opinion: Ok yeah, so I’ve mostly come around on the production here. It’s not my favourite, and they strike me as one of those bands I’d love in a live setting more than on record. But at the same time, I can see what you mean about it working with the music. Particularly in Tulsi, that song has such a mood to it, and damn that saxophone section is just great. So this isn’t blowing me away yet, but all in all I’m feeling positive about it and interested to check the albums out.

Score: 8.1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
wolfking – Norther
1. Death Unlimited
2. A Fallen Star
3. Vain
4. Omen

First impression: You win the prize for most accurate description ever.

Final opinion: Yeah, there’s a massive Children of Bodom influence here, damn. :lol You were also spot on in describing the “cool, aggressive tunes” and “strong sound overall”. The aggression is definitely there, it’s pretty fierce at times, and they have that angsty feel going on like Bodom. I think this is a little more consistently melodic perhaps (or could just be your choice of songs), which is up my alley, plus some use of clean vocals gives it its own flavour. All in all this is strong stuff.

Score: 8.2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
lonestar – Deadly Circus Fire
1. Through the Soil (i. Born ii. Damned iii. Requiem)
2. Her Epitaph (iv. The Return)
3. The King and The Bishop

First impression: A solid enough example of a genre that I’m extremely familiar with.

Final opinion:  Like Evermind’s prog metal submission, this was definitely a grower, perhaps slightly more so. Instrumentally, there’s a huge SC/BCSL-era Dream Theater influence here, so musically speaking it’s not especially unique. But the melodies and the more aggressive vocal style push it some way towards alt-metal, which is a very cool mix. Her Epitaph is intense, but it’s a real head-banger. I do wonder if I might find the full album slightly one-track, but based on these tracks alone I’m digging it a lot.

Score: 8.2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nekov – Bend Sinister
1. Best of You
2. Hot Blooded Man
3. Gang of Wolves
4. Got You on My Mind

First impression: Poppy, quirky, a lot of fun all round.

Final opinion:  These guys seem to get defined as either “indie rock” or “progressive indie”, whatever that means, but there’s a big power-pop vibe in a lot of this too. Anyway it’s very cool stuff, and the difficulty classifying them I think is a good demonstration of the diversity and quirkiness on display. Best of You is the epitome of that, the real highlight here and definitely elevates it beyond just being solid indie – it covers such a range of style and ideas, and for all that it’s fun music, it has a serious side too and the more emotional moments are fantastic.

Score: 8.2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cyril – Daniel Olsén, Jonathan Eng & Linnea Olsson
1. Begin Again
2. Dead of Night
3. Mine
4. The World We Knew
5. Inside
6. Wild Hearts Never Die
7. A Place I Don't Know

First impression: Vocals aren’t the strongest but otherwise an unexpected joy.

Final opinion: While I’m still not entirely sold on the vocals, they do at least give the music a dreamy quality that adds to how immersive the overall sound is. All-in-all, this is really lovely modern synthpop, with a nice mix of cute pieces and more upbeat and energetic electropop. I had no idea what to expect really, but this music just makes me really happy. Looks like I’m going to have to get this game as I understand the music is a bit part of it.

Score: 8.3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
romdrums – The Intersphere
1. Relations in the Unseen
2. Sleeping God
3. Out of Phase
4. The Grand Delusion
5. Shipwreck

First impression: Great hooks and energy.

Final opinion: You described these guys as “new prog” and I know what you mean, it’s in that oeuvre of proggy music that has clear influences from post-hardcore and alt-rock. It’s a nice mix when done well, and these guys seem to do it really well. Never gets that heavy, but it’s all pretty energetic and engaging, and there are some really strong hooks. Not sure they quite have the emotionality of some of their influences, like Thrice, but still top-notch stuff.

Score: 8.3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sacul – Saltillo
1. Giving In
2. A Hair on the Head of John the Baptist
3. Denim
4. They All Do It The Same

First impression: A lot of mood and a lot of groove.

Final opinion: This is definitely gloomier than what you sent in the previous round, but I like it for many of the same reasons. Really cool downtempo music with a good amount of energy, full production and a bit of experimentation. I like the variety too, between the more straightforward vocal songs and the more sample-based tracks – and thankfully both approaches are done really well.

Score: 8.3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stadler – The Panic Channel
1. Teahouse of the Spirits
2. Outsider
3. Bloody Mary
4. Loop Hole

First impression: Great combination of punchy and catchy – liking it a lot and more than I thought I might.

Final opinion: You didn’t have the best start but you’ve been getting better with every round, and this is the best thing you’ve sent me since Rainbow in round 1 of my v3! I’ve never really got into Jane’s Addiction, and I’m wondering now whether Farrell’s vocals are a stumbling block. Production may be part of it too. Either way, this is sooooo much better. It’s punchy, energetic alt-rock with a ton of charm, great performances and a really strong melodic approach – the combination reminds me of Alter Bridge, even though the sound is a little different. Big standout for me is Bloody Mary.

Score: 8.4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
TAC – Netherbird
1. Mercury Skies
2. Lunar Pendulum
3. Harvest the Stars

First impression: An excellent example of a genre that doesn’t feature much in my collection.

Final opinion: Melodic black metal isn’t really something I know much about – the only things in my RYM tagged with it are also tagged with other things, and even then there’s only a handful of artists. Anyway, it looks like it might be an area of black metal that’s particularly up my alley (like with melodic death metal) as this is really excellent. There’s a certain eerie darkness to it, befitting of the genre, but it really is very melodic, it’s all at least great and some of it is just fantastic.

Score: 8.5

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Train – A.A. Williams
1. Exit in Darkness
2. Control
3. Melt

First impression: Warm, emotive, really rather good.

Final opinion: This is some really gorgeous music. It’s like a wonderful marrying of good post-rock with gorgeous vocals to create something greater than the sum of its parts. You described her singing as “sad, captivating, unique vocals” and I can’t say it any better, so I won’t. But it works because the music is so immersive too. All three songs are lovely, but the new single Melt is the definite standout, so clearly I have an exciting album to look forward to!

Score: 8.5

Jingle – M.I.GOD.
1. Vertigo
2. The Solitary Ghost
3. Sonata in Tenebris (Interlude I)
4. Tears of Today
5. The Call
6. Weight of a Million Souls

First impression: A cracking example of a genre that, again, I’m really quite familiar with.

Final opinion:  Really interesting submission here, sending three songs along with their preceding intro/interlude tracks. It works really well, and gives me a sense of how they all fit into the album in terms of flow. As for the music, it speaks to me in much the same way the Daydream XI did in round 2. It’s prog metal, and it’s not very original in terms of its core style, but it’s really excellently done with some great hooks, and there’s enough of a unique flavour (in this case a futuristic sort of sound, where DXI had a more theatrical circus vibe) to make it exciting.

Score: 8.6

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Katt – Frédéric Chopin
1. Prelude No. 7 in A: “The Polish Dancer”
2. Prelude No. 15 in Db: “Raindrop”
3. Prelude No. 11 in B: “The Dragonfly”
4. Nocturne No. 1 in Bb minor
5. Nocturne No. 2 in Eb
6. Prelude No. 20 in C minor: “The Funeral March”

First impression: Delicate and quite beautiful.

Final opinion: I don’t live under a rock, so I already knew Nocturne No. 2 very well, and I also happened to know the Funeral March well too as my brother used to play it on piano when he was a young’un. But the rules are the rules, plus this was mostly new music for me. It’s definitely increased my interest in Chopin again. Not that I don’t like the two pieces I already know (especially the Funeral March), but all this music is gorgeous and Nocturne No. 1 in Bb minor is probably my favourite of the lot (I can be a sucker for minor key romantic music sometimes).

Score: 8.6

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shadow – Cloud Cult
1. Chemicals Collide (live)
2. No One Said it Would be Easy (live)
3. Complicated Creation (live)
4. Love and the First Law of Thermodynamics (live)
5. Good Friend (live)

First impression: This could have been risky, but instead it’s wonderfully unique and I love it already.

Final opinion: Sending an extract from a live acoustic video that (from what I can tell) wasn’t a full professional release could definitely have been risky – my experience with most artists is that they sound better on studio recordings than live ones. But this is wonderful. From your submission and a google search, I gather that they are normally an indie rock band, but this show was much more acoustic folk in style. Musically the songs are lovely, but also the performance has such a raw and upbeat sincerity to it that’s really immersive. Love it.

Score: 9.0

From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

I guess I should have gone with the heavier stuff.  Perhaps next time since they likely won't be banned.... :)
