Should the max number of artists in the EP round be increased from 4 to 5?

Yes that would be much better and Cyril is very attractive.
3 (14.3%)
No that's a terrible idea, Cyril should be stoned.
5 (23.8%)
Whatever.

I have a feeling I'm not going to have anything in this roulette that is really going to wow Rich.  Not that I expected that from VP anyway truthfully.
That's defeatist talk!

In both the first two rounds you scored 8.2 which was above average in what is so far a high-scoring roulette for me. For context, the high scorers in my last three roulettes:

  • In v3, the highest average rating was 8.00 (although they didn't win as I had a complex scoring and elimination system in that one).
  • In v4, the highest average rating was 8.31, for the winner
  • In v5, the highest average rating was 8.06, for the winner
Basically, you're sending strong stuff so far, so keep it up!

EDIT: To expand slightly, 8.0/10 is a key milestone for me in terms of really liking something a lot. I'm getting an unusual amount of it so far in this roulette, which I'm sure will translate to slightly less once I give full albums a listen, but still.

It's all good, I'm not worried about it and I know everything I've sent so far has been reliable yet safe.  I guess Rich even though we've both been around on DTF a long time, for some reason I guess I just haven't fully taken notice what makes you tick as much of others. I think your tastes are just so varied it seems.

ariich

There's definitely an element of that. I think participating in each other's roulettes (not just you and I, but us all collectively) is a pretty big part of learning about each other's tastes and interests, and that's very much a part of why I wanted to do this type of roulette this time.

And yeah for sure my tastes are very varied on the whole, and also not super consistent. :lol There are some things that will pretty reliably get an 8-8.5 sort of score, but the stuff that goes up towards 9/10 tends to be riskier and could go either way (and sometimes does) and even I can't predict or explain what or why.

Incidentally, this is potentially going to be the highest scoring round yet. I'm sure you guys have to run out of good stuff at some point, but there could be quite a few 8.5+ scores here, definitely more than the previous rounds.

Hasn't Elite sent Overhaul?

I did it once in Stadler's roulette where the round's theme was 'You', but I'm kind of hesitant in sending my own music in roulettes because it forces the host to form an opinion on my music and I don't want to force an awkward situation :)

Any final guesses on first impressions before I reveal the lot?

I think I've got a good cycle here, with:
Weekend: Submissions
Monday: Hangman
Tuesday: First impressions
Wednesday: Reveal first impressions
Thursday: Comparisons
Friday: Results hopefully, or if not then Saturday at the latest.

I think it's pretty awesome that you can commit yourself to listening to multiple hours of music other people send you.

I know that's the point of a roulette, but it seems so daunting to me, that's why I never had more than about 10 participants sending one song each every round. I just don't have the time on a given day to listen to hours of music.

It depends a huge amount on work. I can listen to a lot of music while I'm working - not while I'm in calls/meetings obviously, but pretty much the whole rest of the time. Plus during a roulette I prioritise listening to music over TV or video games. So the combination of those two factors means a lot of time available to have music on.

Of course, not every listen is equally attentive (mainly when working), but across 3-4 listens of each, I'm able to give enough attention to form a view. And if I'm struggling to form a view on something, I'll give it another listen.

It always takes me time to absorb new music, so I wouldn't want to have too much during a roulette.  I think the least listens any song got during mine was 5 or 6, but most got at least 10.

Like ariich, I can listen at work but depending on the work that day, I might not be able to listen as much or might not even remember what I listened to.

jingle.boy

I was the same. I always wanted a minimum of 5-6 listens. At that point, I know what I like or dislike. Then, some additional spot listening to fine tune the rankings if necessary.

That said, I couldn't fathom doing a roulette where each submission was multi-song or an album.  That would be too much for me.  I admire (and am jealous of) Rich for being able to tackle that amount of music.

I'm the same as jingle and Lethean. I actually wasn't planning on having eliminations at all my last roulette, but I added them in because so many people joined and I didn't want the later rounds to take forever.

ariich

How long it takes me to properly absorb something depends quite a lot on the music, its complexity, accessibility etc. But 3-4 listens is pretty much always enough to know roughly how much I like it, enough to be able to rate it anyway. And particularly in this roulette, I don't really want to "properly absorb" these mini "best of"s, I want them to introduce me to the artist's music, get me interested, and then I want to check out full albums and really absorb those that I like the most.

Quote from: jingle.boy on May 20, 2020, 07:53:59 AM

I don't think it deserves admiration, I think it's just different ways we approach/consume music - neither better nor worse.

I do have the benefit of time during which I can have music on, which allows me to listen to a lot (though not unlimited, which is why I capped players in my album roulettes and have capped length in this one).

And in terms of my approach, I find albums or these mini greatest hits easier to track and get my head around than if I'd received individual tracks. I like being able to consciously select a new artist/playlist and absorb their music for 12-21 minutes, then select the next one, and so on. If it was all individual tracks, I'd have to either do that every track, or put them in a big playlist but then it's very easy to tune out and miss a submission entirely.

I can't understand well my first impression. The music makes you sleep? Cry? I know it's negative only because I got confirm about that, otherwise I could have even been positive about this (eyes shining for the beauty of music )
