Buckethead Thread
« on: May 06, 2009, 06:43:20 PM »
Buckethead is one of my 2 allowed mancrushes. (JP being the other) The music he makes is so atmospheric, and so inspiring, and so weird at the same time. He's a genius.

So, wanna get into Buckethead? Our own Lateralus88 has made the definitive guide as to which albums to start with.

It really depends on what you are looking for, honestly.

If you want a bit more straight forward, guitar solo wizardy filled with some really groovy moments - Population Override. It's like 10 long guitar solos/jam sessions. It's fantastic.
If you want something a bit more...mind-fuck oriented - Bucketheadland 2, Inbred Mountain or Kaleidoscalp
If you want something a tad electronic/beat oriented - Monsters and Robots (well this fits under the next category as well), Bermuda Triangle or Funnel Weaver
If you want some just really cool sounding guitar music with lots of really heavy moments - Albino Slug, The Elephant Man's Alarm Clock, Decoding the Tomb of the Banshee Bot, Island of Lost Minds or Crime Slunk Scene.
If you want something really, really chill and easy to relax to - Colma or Electric Tears.  :hat :hat :hat :hat :hat
If you want something like you've never heard - Spinal Clock. It's banjo music. I don't even know if I like this album or not.
And if you want something that samples a lot of Buckethead's different styles - Giant Robot.

Don't even get me started with his side projects like The Deli Creeps or Praxis. And pay no attention to Enter the Chicken. It's really not that good of an album. Aside from 3 songs, its' generally just meh for Buckethead.

Agreed that he is a genius.

Giant Robot, Bucketheadland 1 and 2, Monsters and Robots and Inbred Mountain are just utter masterpieces.

I've seen him live once, and he puts on a great, yet strange as shit, concert.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

I need to see him live. Him and Neal.

Every album of his I've heard has been absolutely amazing.

I love Buckethead.  Probably my favorite guitarist.

I've never listened to an album of his that I didn't like.  Colma, Giant Robot, Crime Slunk Scene and Population Override are masterpieces as is Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis) by Praxis.

His work with Thanatopsis and Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains is amazing as well.

I used to hate him. Well, not hate, I guess dislike him, before ever hearing a single note he played.

I d/l-ed Colma a couple of days ago, and I must say that I'm impressed. And that I will check him out further, and most of all, give him some credit.

Guitar Hero may have introduced a lot of people to him but a fair amount of the stuff mention in even this thread would never belong in Guitar Hero. It'd be like, 2 or so years down the road, saying DT is overrated because Panic Attack is on Rock Band. Hell, even WITH Guitar Hero he's still not that well known. I think more people played Jordan and went into rage mode instead of going "woah, this song's hard so Buckethead must be the bestest guitarist ever" and, even then, the kids who do that are going to go crazier over Dragon Force than him. Actually, I know quite a few people who have GH2 but have no idea what I'm talking about when I mention Buckethead.

I'd be interested in hearing what albums of his you've listened to, if any.

I liked the part where you implied that I can't listen to him and still think he is overrated.

I like the part where you have no idea what "implied" means. If I were trying to "imply" you hadn't heard any of this stuff then I would have said "You should probably listen to some of his stuff before claiming he's overrated." and wouldn't have even bothered asking what albums you've heard.

He gets too weird in places for me, but some albums are fantastic.  Specifically, Population Override and Crime Slunk Scene are really really good.

Quite frankly, you're not making any sense. I used "implied" correctly, and your backtracking doesn't change what your post said.
Anyway I feel I'm going off-topic, and as I don't really have anything else to say about Buckethead, I'm going now

How am I backtracking? I asked you what albums you've listened to, if any and you still refuse to answer it. As someone who has multiple albums of his, I know that different albums of his can sound like completely different artists. Monsters and Robots is nothing like Colma and both are extremely different from Population Override.

I didn't even come close to implying what you said, so, no, I'm going to say you didn't use it correctly.

Colma was one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard (I felt colma (song) was a little odd - it was more chilling than beautiful)

Although Buckethead's more famous as a shredder, I think it's when he playes beautifully, is where he really gets to shine. Far better than the overrated Yngwie IMO

Alright people, UMH had a facebook status about him, and so I decided I must get more Buckethead. I've heard some random songs, like Jordan, White Wash, and Soothsayer, and loved them all, but I have no actual albums. GIVE ME RECOMMENDATIONS NAO

Bucketheadland 2, Giant Robot, Monsters and Robots, Population Override, Crime Slunk Scene, Inbred Mountain, Albino Slug.

Definitely get Albino Slug.

Never heard Albino Slug.

My main suggestions would be Population Override, Colma, Monsters and Robots, and Enter The Chicken.

Population Override

Though, even if you're not into shred, if you just want a heavier, riffier Buckethead, Albino Slug is the way to go.
