Today we begin the first album of the Atlantic Years, their "4th Sector" so to speak, and the begin of the band's move away from their 80's synth-heavy sound. The initial release of this album featured a mix that, what many fans have call, is tinny and thin, and some of the songs' heaviness is lost because of that, but there are some really great pieces on this album (and some not so great, a trend that began with HYF, and would continue through their 90s albums). I guess this it what happens when you release every song you write and put out your longest album yet - there are bound to be a few less-than-stellar songs.

War Paint...there’s very few Rush songs I dislike. This is one of them

Everytime we do Presto I cringe.   Because people always hate on some of my favorite tracks from this album.  I LOVE Superconductor, War Paint, and Scars.   LOVE LOVE LOVE them.

The weak songs are easily Anagram, Red Tide, and Hand Over Fist.   I'd toss all three at once if I could.   But I'll start with Red Tide.

Red Tide

There are only a couple of tracks that I would skip when listening to this album. Other than that, it is really consistent. One of the great ones.

It's a toss up between Hand over Fist and Scars.  I'll go with HOF to start.

Me thinks you're going to have a very disappointing time as we go through this album.   :lol

It's kinda weird to me that the "classic era" of the band tends to have a much more agreed upon consensus as to what the classic and most popular tracks are.   It doesn't deviate much.  Fans have their very definite favorites.

But as we move into and past the synth era, votes become much more diversified.  Even first round votes tend to go towards 4-5 songs instead of just 1 or 2 like with the older albums.

I guess that's the beauty of Rush songs. The diversity of them as they approached the 90s and even beyond then is really exemplified by the fact that each song has a fan, and that those fans cannot really agree which song(s) are the best on each album. Of course, I think many of us can agree on one or two per album, but even then, everyone's 3rd-5th places are so different from one fan to another.
