I don't understand how this guys can be so good while at the same time having so many problems to put together a record.

Well, I've understood that they're very perfectionist and don't want to release anything they consider half-arsed or substandard. But maybe their standards are tad too high.

I think it's interesting because Tool probably could have gone the path of a normal band with an album every 3 years and maybe they would have had a very mixed discography with high highs and low lows, but instead they really put their time into it and they have a really strong discography in terms of quality-of-albums. I don't think the new album will be a disappointment, I think it will deliver and it will be a pretty good album (there's no reason to think otherwise IMO) but the long wait definitely made me lose interest in the band overall.

Quality of music is obviously entirely subjective but it's interesting that when we discuss most bands that have been around since the 80s or early 90s, there's always "oh they really went downhill in that phase" or similar opinions. With Tool they release albums so sparse that you don't really get those lulls. Part of me admires that they take their time and don't put anything out until they are 100% happy, it's all part of the charm.

they released 10,000 days and the back half of that was incredibly substandard compared to lateralus  :P

I used to agree with that but now I'm no longer that sure. It just happens the first 5 tracks are so good it sets a crazy standard. I think second half is pretty good though, Right in Two and Rosetta Stoned has grown on me and Intension ain't too bad. Virginti Tres could have been (should have been?) left off completely and I don't care much for Lost Keys either but those type of filler tracks exist on previous albums too.

I actually like the 2nd half just as much as first half. Is it weaker? Perhaps, but I only have beef with two tracks:

1. Lipan Conjuring- As a kid I was like What the fuck is this and just skipped it. As an adult I realize its an ayahuasca shaman, who is overseeing the ceremony. Sounds like a neat idea on paper, but I'd rather they just left it off the album, or made it like 20 seconds or something.

2. Vigninti Tres is nothing and I deleted it long ago.

Besides that I really like Rosetta stoned, intention and right in two

I wouldn't say the first half of 10,000 Days is without filler either - I skip Wings Part 1 all the time. Part 2 is way better, is already quite long, and works fine on its own imo.

I haven't listened to 10,000 Days enough, but I don't think it drops in quality. The album just lacks catchiness outside The Pot.

Look.....I'm as lukewarm on 10KD as much as the next Tool fan.    But am I seriously the only one here that puts Vicarious in the top 5 Tool songs EASILY?

Definitely one of the best on that album. Might be tied with Right in Two for me

I would put Vicarious in my top3 i think. 10 000 Days (Wings Part 2) would also be a good candidate for that. Jambi crushes with those riffs, Wings for Marie is a good atmosphere-builder going into the second part, The Pot is just so groovy.

One thing that takes the album to another level for me is the sound/production/mix. The guitars sound crunchy and heavy, the bass is crisp and the drums sound massive. It's one of my go-to albums when I want a metal album that just sounds really good to blast from my speakers.

I can't believe I'm actually commenting in the Tool thread, since I really don't consider myself a fan. Of all of their discography, Lateralus is the only album I would call solid, and even that one loses my interest after the title track. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one and that even a fan of the band would agree.

4669 days since the last album, there we have it boys. Soon halfway there!

As of today, it's been 9859 days since the release of Opiate. 141 days until it's been 10,000 days from the first EP to the new album.

it's an indication that they already released the album but it was sent back in time to ancient rome, where nobody had a way to play it, thus it is lost to time forever, unless an archaeologist can discover a copy hidden in the great ruins of the roman empire
