The Call of Ktulu is losing?? I thing it's one of Metallica's best songs, especially the S&M version.

Well, it's losing against Sanitarium, not against a St. Anger song  :D

I know on a prog forum being an instrumental is not a disadvantage at all, but Sanitarium has vocals and memorable lyrics and melodies, it's not so unthinkable it would win over a long instrumental, no matter how good (I'm a big fan of Ktulu)

I voted for it, but when I vote for songs in this survivor, I am only considering the album version. So while I agree the S&M version is amazing, the album version is less great (though still great) and I will vote accordingly. This mostly impacts songs like Hero of the Day, which is okay on the album, but incredible on S&M. But I'll vote for the album version because that's how I see this survivor.

I voted for Ktulu, but I expected (and still expect) that Sanitarium will win, in part because it has lyrics and Ktulu doesn't.  I disagree that instrumentals are not at a disadvantage just because this is "a prog forum."  I've seen plenty of folks (mostly in the recent DT league) write that they favor songs with lyrics over instrumentals.  All other things being equal, I'll vote for a song with lyrics over an instrumental.  However, in this case, I like Ktulu more than I like Sanitarium.

I think that may be because many instrumentals feel like a regular song, but with the vocals erased (an instrumental mix). One example for that is Enigma Machine, imo.
Still, there are others of course, that work perfectly without the vocals, because there would be no room for vocals. Like Stream Of Consciousness or The Dance Of Eternity.
I think it's pretty difficult to compose a good instrumental when you are known as a band that usually has vocals in their songs.
