Here's who sent what:

Kattelox: Mystery – Dear Someone
Nekov: Wintersleep – Miasmal Smoke & The Yellow Bellied Freaks
Cyril: Better Oblivion Community Center - Service Road
Puppies_On_Acid: I Like Trains – Mnemosyne
HOF: Big Big Train – Snowfalls
romdrums: Andrew Bayer: Opening Act
Elite: Thrice – Daedalus
Sacul: Darkside – Heart
Tomislav: Fleet Foxes : Mykonos
Train: We Lost The See – Bogatyri

Write-ups are as good as done, but have some snippets first  ;D

1. I love the long intro of this song, there’s something about how the vocals are introduced suddenly that gets me every time

2. The story just adds context to the song that makes it all the more compelling

3. The sound design on this song is just sublime; it’s thick and full while still retaining a mix in which all the different sounds have enough breathing space

4. Man wait until this roulette makes me enthusiastic about prog rock again.

5. This song kind of feels like one of Dream Theater’s ballads/slower songs - which isn’t a bad thing per se, but it's just not something I have any interest in listening to

6. Actually I feel this song just ticks off all the clichés of a sad indie song

7. This is indie-folk done just right!

8. I dig the slightly chill, slightly mysterious vibes

9. While repetition can work great in these kind of songs, here it becomes a bit of a drag.

10. This is a good reminder that I really should dig into this band’s discography.

I feel like these could fairly describe my entry. I just hope it’s not this one:

5. This song kind of feels like one of Dream Theater’s ballads/slower songs - which isn’t a bad thing per se, but it's just not something I have any interest in listening to

I'd say We Lost the Sea is 2, too.

Yuup, but I see how it could apply to the others as well

----------------------------------------------------

Round 4 results :omg:

Andrew Bayer: Opening Act 8.75
The sound design on this song is just sublime; it’s thick and full while still retaining a mix in which all the different sounds have enough breathing space. I love how clear the synths and drums sound. The composition is pretty great too, there are some really cool and smooth transitions there. Plus the overall vibe is super chill, honestly can’t wait to dig into this album! And hey, did this song just earn you a place in the finals?

Wintersleep – Miasmal Smoke & The Yellow Bellied Freaks 8.25
I love the long intro of this song, there’s something about how the vocals are introduced suddenly that gets me every time - the vocals are anyway quite sparsely scattered around the song but emotionally powerful when they are there. I dig the post-rock-ish build-up and how the speed starts picking up in the second half of the song. Glad you took a chance with sending a longer song!

Thrice – Daedalus 8.25
Great composition and nicely evocative lyrics. I like how the music reflects the story, especially from ‘why won’t you listen to me’ onwards; The intensity in the last part is just crushing in a perfect way. This is a good reminder that I really should dig into this band’s discography, thanks!

We Lost The See – Bogatyri 8
I’m glad you included the background to this song, the story just adds context to the song that makes it all the more impressive. I love how dooming and kind hopeless the first part sounds, followed by utter intensity. I have been quite lazy when it comes to Post-Rock and just been listening to the same bands when feeling like listening to any, so I am happy to discover more!

Fleet Foxes : Mykonos 8

This is indie-folk done just right! While for me especially folk can quickly become blad this song has enough to keep it interesting. I love the harmonies in the vocal section. And also that Capella-ish middle section with a brief tempo change there making it all that much more dramatic.

Big Big Train – Snowfalls 8
Man wait until this roulette makes me enthusiastic about prog rock again. It reminds me a bit of ‘classic’ prog music I’ve listened to but is more clear sounding and more emotionally relatable. The song might be a bit stretched but I do love how it climaxes in the last two minutes, it’s such a good amplification of those last vocal lines.

Better Oblivion Community Center - Service Road 8
Actually I feel this song just ticks off all the clichés of a sad indie song - but fuck I don’t care, I still really like it. Both singers voices are very emotion-inducing and I like how they sound together. I do feel the song could have ended on a stronger note

Darkside – Heart 7.25
I dig the slightly chill, slightly mysterious vibes. However despite an good start, composition wise I feel there’s too little happening. It mostly relies on simple motives without really that much happening. Still it’s a very pleasant song to listen to an the singer makes it somewhat unique. As a whole it just kind of passes by though.

I Like Trains – Mnemosyne 6.5
There is some nice post-rock-ish atmosphere, and it kind of builds up nicely at the start, but then it ends up not really going anywhere except for familiar ground. While repetition can work great in these kind of songs, here it becomes a bit of a drag. And the sort of climax in the last half minute is not enough to really make up for it, for me.

Mystery – Dear Someone 6.5
This song kind of feels like one of Dream Theater’s ballads/slower thing - which isn’t a bad thing per se, but just not something I have any interest in listening to lately. I feel kind of bored of it about a minute in and then there are still 5 more minutes to go. I appreciate the musicality but it’s just not for me.

Final thoughts
So that’s the end of the regular rounds, many 8’s in this round! Romdrums climbed the score board the last two round and will join Cyril and Tomislav in the final EP round. Thank you all so much for joining! Everyone sent me at least one song from an album I will for sure check out, and most more than that. Can’t wait to dig into all of this (and have actually already checked out a few :) )

The rules for the EP round are in the OP. I want to give you some time to construct a nice EP, so please send before end of this week’s weekend.

For what it's worth, I'm not sure how BBT gets 8 while Dear Someone is only 6.5, I think Dear Someone is a much better song than Snowfalls, and I love both bands.

Also I had no idea home didn't know Daedalus, that's an awesome song.

Big Big Train are definitely stylistically a modern update of a lot of classic prog (especially Genesis), but they are so much more than a clone and definitely worth investing more time in. I almost sent you a longer but in some ways musically similar track called Victorian Brickwork, which is among my all time favorite songs. But I figured the shorter track might play better for these purposes. For my money, nobody else in prog comes close to BBT’s quality of output since 2009. Some people find them a little tame or polite, but everything they do is super high quality (arrangements, performances, production, storytelling, etc.). They are also genuinely great people and very accessible to their fans. Aside from maybe Marillion, they are probably my favorite active band right now.

Sad I missed the cut for the final round, but this was a lot of fun. Done in by my first round entry it appears!

Edit, my reply to Cyril (to give everyone the same information):
From Julien Baker, Solstafir, Oceansize and Mew everything is banned (and from Amendfoil, Amoebas is banned as it was sent in my previous roulette).
