A song sharing a riff with a Dream Theater song
« on: February 23, 2020, 10:42:36 PM »
The thread https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=54378 made me remember a specific song having a very familiar Dream Theater riff in it. Using the Search function (even the advanced search), it appears it has never been brought up here.

The song is called "Bois Don't Cry", and was written by the Brazilian band "Mamonas Assassinas". It is possibly known to more people than the DT song it shares a riff with, hard to really tell.

Public service announcement: the 'DT' riff kicks in at 1:24, for those baffled by the opening minute.

I also heard Tom Sawyer, bad Motor scooter/these walls, and close encounters..

Thanks  ;)

My God... that is exactly the same as... well, the DT song it shares a riff with (don't want to spoil it for anyone)

So what's the story here? When did this come out - earlier, or later? Who copied who? It's way too similar (the same) to be a coincidence...

This song was released in 1995, so yeah.

From Wikipedia:

Bois Don't Cry
The title parodies The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry" but the lyrics and the music follow the bolero style. Makes fun of a flamboyant macho man who suffers impotent as the woman he loves cheats him. Features a short synthesizer sequence off Rush's "Tom Sawyer" and "The Mirror" from Dream Theater.

Edit: If you skip the song to 1:44, you can really hear it.
