Shadows of A Dying Sun, Across the Dark and One For Sorrow are all wonderful records.  Out to the Sea is a bonus track from Shadows of A Dying Sun.  Winter's Gate is phenominal too if you're up for a 40 minute song.

The older stuff is quality too particulary Above the Weeping World.  A bit harder too the older stuff.

Oh wait. I've heard Winter's Gate too. The fact that I just remembered this is not looking good for Insomnium. I didn't even stay to watch them headline at ProgPower last year. Bunch of friends have hyped up Shadows... for a while though.

Don't get me wrong, it's not bad music, but nothing so far has compelled me to replay the stuff again. I always used to confuse Insomnium with Omnium Gatherum (gee, wonder why  :lol) but the one Omnium Gatherum song I know (Frontiers) is better than every Insomnium song I've ever heard.  :corn

I've gone back to it about 3 times over the last fortnight and it's even better than it was when it was released. Hearing things in there I never noticed before and it's even more cohesive now than it was before also.  It's brilliant.  They purposely and publicly said they copied the blueprint of Edge of Sanity's Crimson to mould it and while it's a totally different album, they nailed the 40 minute song in their own right.  I was surpsried when they admitted how much of an influence Crimson was but they came up with something of their own.  Great stuff.

Not really musically, just the idea of a cohesive 40 minute song.  Musically I don't hear anything similar, it sounds like epic INsomnium and the strctures and all different and whatnot but yeah, I'd have to find the intereviews but I think the band basically said they wanted to do something different from the normal 10 song album in the same style and were listening a lot to Crimson and drew inspiriation from that for Winter's Gate.

My take is, Insomnium is amazing, but for that style of music I tend to like In Mourning just a tiny bit better.

The more I listen to this round the more I realize I maybe should've seeded the bracket differently instead of totally randomly. OH WELL it's all for fun

Does that mean a lot of the brackets are one-sided or that all the good and bad songs are matched up with other good and bad songs? :lol
