Pop music in general has been on an upward trend this past year, and When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? as well as Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next are the pinnacle of this past year’s incredible collection of pop albums.
I loved thank u, next - crazy how much better it is than Sweetener (which only has a few tracks I like). Same goes for TS's Lover album, an incredible collection of songs with very few misses. Waiting for Normani's album and Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia now, the singles are killer.

Yes. Very good album. Ear-worm melodies.

Checked out a few songs to see what the hype is all about, did not get it. She's not bad but similar to how I feel about a lot of the mainstream artists these days it just seemed painfully mediocre and nothing really standing out. Like it's not BAD but it's not great either. Even though I'm not 30 yet I'm starting to feel like a fogey because I don't even remember the last time a globally BIG artist/band everyone was raving about was also something I liked as well.

I've heard/seen a few songs on YouTube.  Like a lot of music out there, it isn't something I would buy or seek out, but I can enjoy and appreciate it enough when it's on.

But I will say, I liked her a lot more after watching this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh2qGWfmESk

Wow, I come back after two days to find 30 replies to a post I did about an 18 year old girl in a prog metal forum.. There must be something about her  :lol
or not. She is what Haken and Leprous are to prog. Nothing but hype. (IMHO anyway) Btw, you can bow down to her six times a day now, seeing as her main title song for the new Bond film was released today. (spoiler: I hate it. Listen for yourselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oAAlssVwEw )
Then again, I might not be the right person to ask about concerning contemporary pop music.
You're right though, her appearing on a forum for prog (which we are, I guess) is somewhat absurd, almost Pythonian in a way.

The new Bond song is out - Billie did it. It's really, really good imo.

Disagree here about it being absurd, while sure, this forum is mostly about prog and metal in general, there is a wide variety of genres being discussed each day in GMD, especially if you're playing in roulettes.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

of course, and it's not wrong at all or anything (I do too in my thread btw), but her in particular definitely wasn't someone I expected (and maybe some others here either)

I'm not sure how RoeDent meant it. However, one way I could read that is that the pop industry is SO heavily manufactured nowadays. Dozens of writers working with the artists and a bunch of producers to finely craft what they feel is the most likely to sell and then using the highest end equipment in the best studios etc. While Billie is in a bedroom writing these great songs with her brother and nothing else. It's a nice challenge to the accepted thought that to be a hit, it needs that much of a team behind it.

The Bond song is great. She's as authentic and genuine as it gets which is really refreshing in a genre known for everything being super-manufactured

The only two people I can think of in pop music today who can sit down alone in a room with a guitar/piano/computer and make a hit song from scratch are Taylor Swift and Lorde. And they got famous years ago. So yeah, it's nice to have a new face.

The new Bond song is good, not great. It’s maybe a bit too laid back, wish there was a bit more intensity/build up at the end, but still quality.

I will say that it also sounds ALOT (maybe too much) like the last Bond song “Writings on the Wall” by Sam Smith, which I consider to be miles better.

Skyfall still reigns supreme as far as Bond songs are concerned.

Hot take but I think “You Know My Name” by Chris Cornell is the best Bond song of the Daniel Craig era. (Not to mention Casino Royale is far and away the best Craig Bond movie, and maybe top 2-3 Bond movies, period.)

Skyfall is by far the greatest Bond song in my opinion.

However, I haven't heard the new song by Billie Eilish. I decided that the first time I hear that song will be in the cinema.

You Only Live Twice is the best Bond song IMO. It just screams 60s cool.

It was also used (to great effect) in Mad Men.

Couldn't make it through that whole new Bond song. I hate that style of 'breath-y, I can barely hear you' type of singing. Is there a name for that? I don't know how else to describe it.

I’d say Tori Amos was doing it long before Del Rey.

Let's say Tori Amos sang much better than the thread's main character.

Onononononono...

You Know My Name should be one of the best Bond songs of all time but that bloody chorus.... the chorus doesn't go to where my brain desperately wants it to. The result is I cannot listen to it without getting agitated unless I can sing the note I want him to go up to. Drives me absolutely spare

Idk man, I like the chorus  “are you willing to die” provides the resolution.

Useless factoid; Apparently Mikael Äkerfeldt is a fan of the song too.

I'd actually be curious if you (at least on the bigger songs) can hear any of her vocals over the crowd singing along.

My guess would be no, but that’s my guess based on what I’ve seen from YouTube clips.
