Rush Survivor 2020 - Results & Discussion
« on: January 16, 2020, 08:29:28 PM »
With the recent and seemingly sudden passing of Rush drummer Neil Peart, many of us Rush fans have been going back and listening to the band's discography in memory of the beloved percussionist and lyricist. It's been about 3.5 years since the last time I did the Rush Survivor, and back then, the band's future was still a bit unclear, but at this point, we know they are done. I figured since we're all listening to Rush again anyway, might as well see how these songs stack up through a Survivor!

Like last time, I will be running two albums concurrently, each with two-day rounds. UNLIKE last time, I won't be going over any non-album songs, and I will just be focusing on the band's 19 full-length studio albums (so no Feedback, sorry Feedback fans). The top two songs of each album will advance to the Finals, with third place songs going to a 19-song Consolation Survivor, where the top two there will get a second chance in the Finals. In the end, we will have 40 songs running in the Finals!

Not gonna join this but have fun everyone who will, and congratulations to you for taking up such a mammoth task with this huge discography!  :tup
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

First and foremost, thanks for doing this!

So...no weighting for the better liked albums?  That's gonna be tough for albums like Hemispheres and Moving Pictures.

Also, what non-album tracks are there (other than the handful of pre-Rush singles, which I assume would all get quickly eliminated)?

I don't weight albums or tracks, every album gets 2 to the finals, and 1 to consolation, regardless of how many songs there are or how well-liked an album is. Sure, it means that half of Hemispheres goes to the Finals and a third of 2112/AFTK/PEW all go to Finals as well, but it's the easiest and fairest way I can do them without complicating matters.

Last time I ran this Survivor, I included songs like "Bad Boy", "Fancy Dancer" and "Garden Road", as well as the band's first single of "Not Fade Away"/"Can't Fight It", all in a Survivor with the 8 songs from Feedback. It was a sort of covers/non-album-tracks survivor, and also included "I've Been Running" and "The Loser". It was a weird mish-mash of songs that most folks weren't aware of, let alone listened to well enough to participate in a 14-round survivor for them, so I decided to omit those songs this time around.

Maybe in 2024, for the band's 50th Anniversary, I'll do this again and with ALL of the known songs written by Rush, whether they were studio-recorded or not, or even if they are kind of hard to find.

Happy to see more folks pop in and get their votes in! I hope you all stick around through the end! Based on how long the 2016 Rush Survivor took, this will go til about mid-June! I may do some other Rush-related survivors like last time - Sectors Survivor, Albums Survivor, Live Albums Survivor, Multi-Movement Songs, The Fear Series (super short!), and maybe more. Maybe I'll throw them in along side the two albums being run concurrently, if no one objects to me running 3 rounds every two days. Maybe I'll do the multi-movement songs when their album comes up? If so, I should start "By-Tor & The Snow Dog" soon!

Meaning At the Tobes of Hades v. Across the Styx v. Of the Battle v. Epilogue?  Something like that would make more sense in the context of The Fountain, 2112 and Hemispheres, but hey, I'm down for whatever.  Would you first have a Challenge and Defiance v. 7/4 War Furor v. Aftermath v. Hymn of Triumph sub-survivor?

I don't think I'd care too much for an individual survivor for multi-movement songs.  But... album survivors (one for studio; one for live) I'm super down with.  Been thinking a lot about what my fave live releases are lately.

Caress Of Steel's Final Round's Results:
The Necromancer 5 (33.3%)
The Fountain Of Lamneth 10 (66.7%)

01. Bastille Day
      The Necromancer
03. The Fountain Of Lamneth
04. Lakeside Park
05. I Think I'm Going Bald

While I expected those two to reach the top two, I did not expect a tie! I'm glad to see half of us like "The Necromancer" a bit more than "Bastille Day". Recently listening to my Live Tourography of shows on CDr, the few shows that had "The Necromancer" were astounding, lots of great performances of the song.

Anyways, with this album now done, AFTK begins, and 2112 wraps up with its final round. After that, Hemispheres will begin!

I am going away this weekend to a convention from Thursday night to Sunday evening, so I will try to update on Friday night, but if I miss it, I will resume on Sunday night.

Moving Pictures's Final Round's Results:
Tom Sawyer 17 (73.9%)
Limelight 6 (26.1%)

01. Limelight
02. Tom Sawyer
03. Red Barchetta
04. YYZ
05. The Camera Eye
06. Witch Hunt (Part III of "Fear")
07. Vital Signs

Limelight takes the top spot, as predicted at the beginning of this album survivor, with Tom Sawyer joining it in the Finals. This was a fun one to see play out in the second half. For comparison, here are the results from the 2016 Survivor i ran:
01. Red Barchetta
      Limelight
03. Tom Sawyer
04. YYZ
05. The Camera Eye
06. Witch Hunt (Part III of "Fear")
07. Vital Signs

The top three were swapped around, so I wasn't expecting TS to make it into the Finals this time, but good on it! Let's see if RB can wrestle its way to the top of the Consolation rounds!

Signals's Final Round's Results:
Subdivisions 5 (22.7%)
The Analog Kid 17 (77.3%)

01. Subdivisions
02. The Analog Kid
03. Losing It
04. Digital Man
05. The Weapon (Part II of "Fear")
06. New World Man
07. Countdown
08. Chemistry

I suspected the first two tracks to make it to the top 2 again. In fact, the top four are the same as the last time! Here are the results from 2016:

01. Subdivisions
02. The Analog Kid
03. Losing It
04. Digital Man
05. New World Man
06. Chemistry
The Weapon (Part II of "Fear")
08. Countdown

The Survivor for Power Windows begins today, and so we move on through the synth-era!

Grace Under Pressure's Final Round's Results:
Distant Early Warning 12 (66.7%)
Between The Wheels 6 (33.3%)

01. Between The Wheels
02. Distant Early Warning
03. Red Sector A
04. Afterimage
05. The Enemy Within (Part I of "Fear")
06. Kid Gloves
07. Red Lenses
08. The Body Electric

Voted two to one, DEW places second, leaving the album closer to take the top spot! Of course, both songs advance to the finals with RSA going on to Consolation. We are nearly half-way through all of the albums, and I'm happy to see that many of the voters are still sticking around through the 80s albums! I hope we can keep this momentum going as we push on into the 90s within the coming weeks!

-Marc.

Results notwithstanding, does anyone really think DEW is one of the two best songs on GUP?

I was going to defend you and voice my agreement that DEW is terribly overrated...

......but then you dissed Territories.

Power Windows's Final Round's Results:
Manhattan Project 13 (81.3%)
Marathon 3 (18.8%)

01. Marathon
02. Manhattan Project
03. Territories
04. Middletown Dreams
05. Grand Designs
06. The Big Money
07. Mystic Rhythms
08. Emotion Detector

Manhattan Project lands in 2nd place, but both it and Marathon move on to the finals! For the curious, here are the results from 2016, which is quite a change compared to these current results:

01. Marathon
02. Mystic Rhythms
03. Manhattan Project
04. The Big Money
      Middletown Dreams
06. Grand Designs
      Territories
08. Emotion Detector

I'm surprised to have seen Mystic Rhythms drop 5 spots, essentially swapping spots with Territories. The songs in 4th-6th place are all the same, if a bit shuffled around a bit, though I wish I had done tie-breakers back then. Ah well. At least it seems that Marathon might always be number one on the album for many fans!

Mystic Rhythms in the #2 spot is an even bigger abomination than Territories in the #3 spot.

Hold Your Fire's Final Round's Results:
Time Stand Still 10 (55.6%)
Mission 8 (44.4%)

01. Mission
02. Time Stand Still
03. Force Ten
04. Prime Mover
05. Open Secrets
06. Lock And Key
07. Turn The Page
08. Second Nature
09. High Water
10. Tai Shan

By a couple of votes, Time Stand Still stands at second place, leaving the pseudo-title-track, Mission, to be the victor of HYF. Interestingly, the same two songs moved to the Finals in 2016, but have no swapped places. Similarly, the first three songs out remained the same, in the same order no less, while Lock And Key lost a few spots, allowing Force Ten to move on to Consolation.

01. Time Stand Still
02. Mission
03. Lock And Key
04. Force Ten
05. Prime Mover
06. Turn The Page
07. Open Secrets
08. Second Nature
09. High Water
10. Tai Shan

Presto's Final Round's Results
The Pass 11 (73.3%)
Available Light 4 (26.7%)

01. Available Light
02. The Pass
03. Presto
04. Show Don't Tell
05. Chain Lightning
06. Scars
07. Superconductor
08. War Paint
09. Anagram (For Mongo)
10. Hand Over Fist
11. Red Tide

The top five songs, oddly enough, are the same as 2016, but third to fifth place has shuffled around a bit. Of course, the top two return to the same places, and both move on to the finals! Here's the 2016 results for comparison:

01. The Pass
02. Available Light
03. Show Don't Tell
04. Chain Lightning
      Presto
06. Red Tide

Roll The Bones's Final Round's Results
Dreamline 9 (47.4%)
Bravado 10 (52.6%)

01. Dreamline
02. Bravado
03. Where's My Thing? (Part IV "Gangster Of Boats" Trilogy)
04. Ghost Of A Chance
05. Roll The Bones
06. The Big Wheel
07. Heresy
08. Neurotica
09. Face Up
10. You Bet Your Life

The top two tracks were neck and neck in the final round, but it seems as though the album opener pulled ahead at the last minute, placing first in the survivor! Both go to the finals, however, and deservedly so! Funny again, to mention, at that the top five were the only five songs the band has played live from this album. Coincidence? Maybe! For comparison's sake, here are the results from 2016:

01. Dreamline
02. Ghost Of A Chance
03. Bravado
04. Roll The Bones
05. Where's My Thing? (Part IV, "Gangster Of Boats" Trilogy)
06. The Big Wheel
07. Face Up
08. Neurotica
09. Heresy
10. You Bet Your Life

The top five remained the same, but the order has been jumbled around a lot since then, except first place. The Big Wheel remained in 6th, while You Bet Your Life was once again the first song out. Heresy and Face Up swapped spots as well!

Counterparts's Final Round's Results:
Animate 10 (62.5%)
Leave That Thing Alone 6 (37.5%)

01. Leave That Thing Alone
02. Animate
03. Cut To The Chase
04. Double Agent
05. Alien Shore
06. Stick It Out
      Cold Fire
08. Everyday Glory
09. Nobody's Hero
10. Between Sun & Moon
11. The Speed Of Love

This was definitely one of the survivors where the votes were fairly evenly spread almost every round, so it made things very exciting as each round went by. For comparison, here are the results from 2016:

01. Animate
02. Double Agent
03. Leave That Thing Alone!
04. Cut To The Chase
05. Everyday Glory
06. Nobody's Hero
      Cold Fire
08. Stick It Out
09, Alien Shore
10. Between Sun & Moon
11. The Speed Of Love

Interesting that the first two out were the same both times, and the top four remained the same as well, albeit in all in a different order. What's funny is there was a tie for 6th place last time as well! What a weird coincidence...

Test For Echo's Final Round's Results:
Test For Echo 8 (47.1%)
Driven 4 (23.5%)
Resist 5 (29.4%)

01. Driven
02. Resist
03. Test For Echo
04. Time And Motion
05. Limbo
06. Half The World
07. Carve Away The Stone
      The Color Of Right
09. Totem
      Virtuality
11. Dog Years

The top three of this album did not surprise me, though I was surprised at how high TAM made it this time around (not that I dislike where it placed, I've actually grown to like the song over the years). The top six were also all songs the band played live on the TFE Tour, with Virtuality being the 7th, so it's obvious the boys like the material a lot, and it seems like they liked the songs fans have grown to like too.

For comparison, here's the 2016 results:
01. Driven
02. Resist
03. Test For Echo
04. Limbo
05. Half The World
06. The Color Of Right
07. Totem
08. Carve Away The Stone
09. Time And Motion
      Virtuality
11. Dog Years

The top three being the exact same doesn't surprise me, along with Dog Years being the first one out. I'd say the 2020 results, compared to 2016, are fairly typical at this point.

So we're coming up close to the last studio album by the band, but I want to keep two rounds running simultaneously, so to fill the gap, I figured I'd run a discography-wide Album Survivor, pitting the band's 19 albums against each other for everyone to decide which one reigns supreme! There won't be any tie-breakers in this one, so it'll run, at most, 18 rounds, which should carry us through most of the CA Rounds and Consolation Rounds. I may also throw in a Feedback Survivor if there's any interest, but those songs won't have any bearing on the Consolations or Finals rounds.

At the current rate, we will reach the Finals around the beginning of August, which will then take another 2-3 months to run, given that there will be 40 songs/39 rounds (and for that, there WILL be tie-breakers, though I may shorten them to 1-day tie-breakers just to speed things along).

Anyways, that's where we're at. I may also do some other smaller survivors during the Consolations & Finals, like I've done in the past, but if anyone has any suggestions for some side-survivors, I'd be open to hearing them. I've done Multi-Movement Songs before (pitting the 7 movements of 2112 against each other, etc.), the songs in the "Fear" series, the Instrumentals, and the Live albums. There's plenty of possibilities to keep things going for the next few months!
