Which band is more beloved on this board?

I prefer Tool by far.

What?

Why are you even comparing these two bands?

I'm going to say Tool, but that's only because I didn't even know about Porcupine Tree until a few years ago and haven't made much of an effort to explore the music, whereas I have known about Tool since I was a teen.  However, I'm a casual fan at best.

Porcupine Tree easily, though this is kind of an unfair comparison given Porcupine Tree has double the amount of albums Tool has.

Pretty much this. Though if you had to force me to pick between Tool's 5 studio albums and my 5 favorite PT albums, it might be a bit harder to choose, but I might still lean towards PT.

A few years ago I would easily have said PT, now I think I might lean towards Tool. For me PT has a great discography but the more music I've discovered since my original PT phase, the less special their music feels. They have a lot of strong 8/10 (or around that area) albums but I don't think any of their albums would make my top50.

I'd take my least favorite PT over Tool. Hell, I'd take Bananarama over Tool. I'd even take Achy Breaky Heart on an hour loop over Tool.

But Signify

I really like Signify a lot and it is one of their best for me but some songs do feel like filler and ultimately I don't think enough songs are in the "top tier" like Dark Matter for me to consider it an amazing album all the way through. It is great though.

I used to love FOABP a lot but it hasn't aged well, particularly the lyrics and the vocals. Musically it's a great album but the rest is definitely a knock on it IMO.

That's fair, though the only lyrics that make me go "yikes" show up on the title track and the middle of Anesthetize - the rest is fine.

Really, Porcupine Tree went one album too far. The Incident was pretty mediocre.
Also Fear Inoculum is awesome and you are crazy

This is funny to me because I'd take Fear Inoculum over most (if not all) PT albums.  :lol
Meanwhile The Incident is easily one of the weakest PT albums.

Yeah - first reaction is simply "why?".

Since I only like the odd Tool song, and even then sometimes struggle to get to the end of the song before wanting to hear something with a soaring melody, my vote's always going to go to Porcupine Tree here, but still... why?

Not picking sides or anything... but what is the problem in comparing these two bands? It is not like there haven't been such topics before... "this band or this band, which one do you like most?", even when the bands are from totally different genres.
