« on: January 09, 2020, 07:44:03 AM »
Welcome to the Home thread for the first edition of The IQ Cup! A total of 87 songs (all the studio album tracks) are automatically entered into the group stage. They will be joined by 9 songs from the Qualifying Tournament. This tournament will begin on Monday 13th January, 2020 (UK time).

I basically barely know that such a band even exists, but knowing the hard effort it takes to run these survivors, and taking part in many of them, I wanted to show - for what it's worth - that at the very least I've read through it and that I'm not partecipating simply for lack of knowledge  :D have fun everyone involved!
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Yeah shit, I've got some listening to do! I'm familiar with most of the albums but definitely need to refresh my memory, didn't expect this to start so soon.

Looking forward to it anyway!

I understand that the songs from disc 2 of ROB are technically bonus tracks....but honestly, it’s difficult to include them with the “non-album” tracks. They are every bit as strong as most things from their main catalog and I consider them to be a part of the ROB album.

But it’s your show. I just say include the 2nd disc of ROB and chuck the rest.

If I could suggest one addition, it would be the 2012 recording of Winterfall from the new TFTLA rerelease.

Might as well get things rolling before I talk myself out of it.

This is why I'm having the qualifying tournament. You can vote for all six ROB2 tracks and still have two more votes to give to other songs if you want.

If I could suggest one addition, it would be the 2012 recording of Winterfall from the new TFTLA rerelease.

OK. This is also why I've allowed a few days between the opening of this thread and the start of the tournament. Basically, if I'm missing anything that isn't a demo/alternate/live version of something on a main album, let me know and I'll amend the list. Obviously I won't be able to after Monday cos it'll have started.

Speaking of the six songs from ROB Disc 2.   Hardcore is missing from the list.

My bad. Thank you.

UPDATE: I have added two further tracks to the qualifying tournament. Apparently there was a *third* disc on some editions of TROB, and two tracks on that disc, having given them a quick listen, are fair game for this: The Slender Sky and McDozenStrings. Again, as with every song, if you don't think it should be included, don't vote for it and it won't be.

I made a mistake in calculating the number of songs for the group stage. I put one more song than was actually the case. So nine songs in total will qualify for the group stage. This also puts paid to my initial idea of having one qualifier in each of the eight groups. So the qualifiers will just all go into the main pot, and be drawn along with the rest of the songs. I'll explain more once the qualifying stage is over and I explain how the draw will work.

The final qualifying round has just been completed, so the nine songs joining the 87 others in the group stage are:

Knucklehead, 1312 Overture, Constellations, Fall and Rise, Ten Million Demons, Hardcore, It All Stops Here, Wintertell, Just Changing Hands

GROUP STAGE DRAW RULES

1. The songs will now be drawn at random into 8 groups of 12 songs each. The first song drawn will go into slot 1 of Group A, the 2nd into slot 1 of Group B, and so on.

2. There will be no more than 2 songs from the same album drawn into the same group, with the exception of Subterranea, where the limit is 3 songs.

3. The Qualifiers will be considered an "album" for these purposes, so no more than 2 of the qualifiers will be drawn into the same group. They do not count towards an album's song limit, so songs from The Road of Bones' bonus tracks will be allowed in a group even if 2 songs from the main album are already in that group.

I will post the groups later tonight, however it will take me a couple of days to arrange all the matchups and type them all out. I'm going to give a tentative start date for the first round of Tuesday 21st January, but if something happens and I have to postpone that, then that's fine.

Now to arrange all the matchups (528 of them) and type them all out. I'm using a Round Robin schedule generator. But because the rounds generated are always the same ("Round 1" in the generator is always 1v6, 2v7 etc.), I'm using a list randomizer to jumble the numbers 1-11 to create the actual schedule for each group.

I actually had to go to YT to hear It All Stops Here.   Seven Stories into 98 is the only IQ album I don't have.   Although MP3's of the original Seven Stories into Eight cassette demo were included on the bonus disc of the brand new TftLA release.   I listened to them a few times, but the production killed it and I didn't really care for them.   But hearing the rerelease on YT peaked my interest.  I'm going to have to find a copy of that on EBay or something.

I know it's a bit of a way off yet, but I'm toying with an idea or two about the knockout stage draw. I guess now is the time to decide if I want to go ahead with them. I was originally just going to make it a straight-up random draw, so the first two songs I draw would go against each other, then the next two, and so on. But I am seriously considering at the very least keeping all the songs that top their groups separated from each other for at least the Round of 32, if not the following round as well.

The other idea I have, and idk how this would work out in practical terms, is keeping songs from the same group separated, so at least for one knockout round we don't get a repeat match that already happened in the group stage.

By the way can I just say this, I'm enjoying this league a lot. Despite the fact there are only 6 or 7 participants, voting in these polls is one of my day's highlights. Thank you RoeDent for running this!
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Thanks Evermind! I'm enjoying running it. It's fascinating to watch it unfold, especially as we're now well into it. They may be on the low side, but I'm just glad the voter numbers have been consistent.

Agreed, though I kinda wish we had an odd number of participants to help eliminate some of these ties.  Anyway, this has been a lot of fun and has really helped me dig deeper into this band. :tup

11 ties out of 240 completed matches so far isn't that many, really. Besides, that's just one of the variables that makes this format interesting. And at least the ties aren't holding up the forward progress of the tournament for the time being.

That compares with nearly a third of the matches so far being shutouts. We've had 77 up to the end of Round 5.

Quick update on this. I've actually decided against doing this. I'd forgotten about the possibility of two songs being tied for top spot in their group. For instance, Group E currently has two songs tied for 1st place, with nothing left to separate them at the moment, given their head-to-head matchup ended in a tie. I don't want to make the end of the group stage even more complicated than it needs to be. So the knockout stage matchups will be drawn at random.

Edit. See below.

We're coming to the end of the group stage, so a quick update on how things will proceed: The tournament will take a couple of days off after the group stage, which is scheduled to end on Saturday, when the final round for Groups G & H closes. I'll probably conduct the draw for the Round of 32 sometime on Sunday, and start the poll on Monday morning. Another thing worth noting is that the main knockout rounds will run for 48 hours instead of the 24 we've been using for the group stage. That might give more people the chance to vote without possibly missing a round because they're not able to vote on a given day.

Now it looks like we're not going to have any ties for 1st place in any of the groups, I think it would actually be a good idea to keep all the group winners separate in the Round of 32. It might not be much, but it might make progress through the first knockout round for the best-performing songs a bit more likely. I know I kept U-turning on this, but I made the last post in a state of panic at the prospect of having to settle a tie with nothing further to separate the songs by. But the final rounds are doing the separating for me, thankfully.

I can't quite figure out how to keep all the songs separate from those they shared a group with. Ideally I'd like to do that, at least to start with, but I don't know if that's possible without some means of predetermination of which songs get drawn together before I actually start drawing the pieces of paper out of the hat.

The group stage is finally complete, and we've whittled the 96 songs down to 32. In order of qualification, they are:

THE DARKEST HOUR, FREQUENCY, THE SEVENTH HOUSE, FURTHER AWAY, CLOSER, OCEAN, SHALLOW BAY, WIDOW'S PEAK, HARVEST OF SOULS, FALLOUT, FOR ANOTHER LIFETIME, STRONGER THAN FRICTION, RYKER SKIES, THE WRONG SIDE OF WEIRD, WITHOUT WALLS, THE LAST HUMAN GATEWAY, GUIDING LIGHT, HUMAN NATURE, FIRE AND SECURITY, FROM THE OUTSIDE IN, THE PROVINCE, UNTIL THE END, THE ROAD OF BONES, SACRED SOUND, THE GREAT SPIRIT WAY, THE NARROW MARGIN, AWAKE AND NERVOUS, TEN MILLION DEMONS, IF ANYTHING, THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT, COMMON GROUND, STAY DOWN

As far as album representation goes, that comprises seven songs from Resistance, five each from The Road of Bones and Frequency, three from The Seventh House, two each from Tales from the Lush Attic, The Wake, Nomzamo, Ever and Dark Matter, one from Subterranea, and one Qualifier. Although Resistance has the most individual songs, The Road of Bones has the best representation, in that its five songs make up 100% of the standard album.

Four songs finished the group stage with the maximum of 33 points: The Darkest Hour, Frequency, Ocean and Harvest of Souls, but the best vote differential goes to For Another Lifetime with +54 (60 votes for it, 6 against).

I will conduct the draw for the Round of 32 later on Sunday, and post the poll on Monday morning. The group winners will be kept in a separate pot from the rest. For the first 8 matchups, I'll draw one from the Winners Pot, followed by its opponent from the other pot. Once the winners pot runs out, the rest will be drawn from what's left in the other pot. This is the only round for which this will apply. From the Round of 16 onwards, it will be a random draw, so group winners could face each other.

After 67 days and 559 matches, The IQ Cup has finally come to an end. And, with a final score of 6-1, your champion is...

THE PROVINCE

And breathe. This certainly stretched my brain's mathematical capabilities to the limit, working out everything that needed to be worked out every day for over 6 weeks. And somehow, only one matchup in the entire knockout stage required a tiebreaker vote. So apart from the odd mistake during the group stage, things went fairly smoothly. When I set out here, I wanted to give the DTF tournament treatment to a band I've never seen get one, and it's been great to see some appreciation for this wonderful band's discography (not that it was particularly lacking in the IQ Thread).

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who took part. We were fairly small compared to other tournaments, but the 5-8 of you kept this tournament afloat and made it a pleasure to run.
