Albums covers that are great where the album is not
« on: December 04, 2019, 08:38:27 PM »
The album doesn't have to be bad, it can merely be good.

First album I thought of was AC/DC's Blow Up Your Video.  Solid record, with a few really good songs, yet the album cover, I think, is pretty awesome.

Blow Up Your Video is awesome. I consider it the 3rd best BJ Era album after BiB and FTATR. I love that album.

The album cover blows. I think you have this backwards. :P

would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

What are your favorite songs?  I am not gonna lie: I had never heard A/DC until MTV suddenly put You Shook Me All Night Long in the regular rotation in the summer of 1987, and then I heard Back in Black and Who Made Who.  I thought all three were awesome.  And then Heatseeker was the first single/video from Blow Up Your Video, and the 14-year old KevShmev was pretty blown away by it. :metal :metal

Every song is excellent except for Ruff Stuff, which kind of blows. Even Some Sin For Nuthin', which isn't a great song on it's own, probably has the best solo section on the whole album.

Might be time for you to dust that off. It was such a huge step up from the mess they call Fly On the Wall (awesome title track not withstanding). Sorry J Dude...

In before Stadler posts about Grace Under Pressure!
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

To actually answer the question, the ones that first come to my mind are:
The Astonishing
Iron Maiden's Fear of the Dark
Queensryche's Dedicated to Chaos and Q2K
Tesla's Bust a Nut

As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

First thought is St Anger. On the whole I think Metallica has great covers, with AJFA being an all timer.

Except the album is pretty awesome. Not one I return to all too often, but some of the stuff on it is amazing. It's not really too consistent, I'll give you that.

Black sabbath Forbidden

Mentioned previously, but Fear of the dark

In through the out door

An album art that deeply resonates with anyone who has ever dealt with a breakup and pain/uncertainty that goes with it. I absolutely LOVE this album cover and I love that he burns the Dear john letter. Really don't like the album though  :lol

I can't think of anything at the moment, but the winner for the reverse question has to be Maiden's Dance of Death. Never the divide between the beauty of an album and the crappiness of the cover was so vast.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

I personally happen to like half of it very much, but for the masses, the popular opinion is that the album isn't good. The artwork however,  :tup

This is why we're buds.  I LOVE that album, and I agree with your ranking exactly.   Album cover? Eh (but then again, I don't think AC/DC has any legendary covers in their catalogue; it's never been their strong suit).

There's a lot of prog/symphonic/power metal albums with pretty cool artwork but music I'm not too fuzzed about. Maiden's crappier albums still have pretty decent artwork.

any Portnoy-era DT album and any Yes album that was released after Talk (Fly From Here being an exeption, possibly even Magnification) What can I say, I always loved all the cover art for both Yes and DT.
Any Led Zeppelin album as well (interesting cover art IMHO, I just never was a fan of LZ and never will be)
Any Iron Maiden cover art (as with Led Zeppelin, I never was a fan of them either but I've always loved their cover art, particulary those paintings by Derek Riggs)

As much as I love Iron Maiden, I always thought the Eddie thing is kind of silly.  I do get it though, it has worked and served them well with album sales. So it's a good marketing tactic geared toward young metal heads back in the day.  It also has paid dividends in merchandise sales at their shows. Even still to this day, Eddie lives on quite well in the Maiden line-up.  :lol
I personally am not a big fan of Eddie,  but I'm a huge Maiden fan.  :metal
I know this is backwards to the context of the thread, but thats what we do here in DT forms.

If they had used the back image of the egg in the vice, then it would fit this category.  Hold Your Fire and Roll the Bones also qualify (although I don't know that I'd go so far as to say that the cover of RtB is "great").

I'll throw this one in the mix:

I fucking love the artwork on Pink Floyd's Animals, but the music never clicked with me. Might be time to revisit it.
