Very good, but OVERLONG songs?
« on: December 03, 2019, 09:18:34 AM »
Name some tunes that are musically very good to you, but it would be better if they were (much) shorter.

My picks are Cygnus X-1 Hemispheres by Rush, All Around the World by Oasis and I'm Your Captain by Grand Funk Railroad. All these songs are very good but unnecessarily long.

When a song is unnecessarily long, how can the full song still be 'good'? Or is a small part of the song good then?
Hey dude slow the fuck down so we can finish together at the same time.

Pink Floyd - Echoes

Love the tune, but that middle section is a bit too long, only to come back to the same music from the first 5 minutes.

Nightwish's intro for The Greatest Show on Earth goes on forever. And the outro as well. It's like the doctor ordered a 24 minutes song at all costs.

I feel like El Barto might weigh in on this one (I'm pretty sure he likes this song), but "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" by the Stones.  I LOVE that song, but the interlude kind of drags on a bit... once - with vinyl and cassette (one of my finest hours) made an edit that had a few bars of the interlude, then went right into that cool ascending riff that brings the band back in.... Love it.

Kiss Black Diamond; Kiss Cold Gin.  They didn't really know how to end songs back then.  :)

There's no such thing as an overlong song. Every song is exactly as long or as short as it needs to be.

There is not a single song that has even been released that is the appropriate length for a song, which is either 0.0000000000011885 picoseconds or 10.5 billion years

One of the worst songs Ive ever heard from my favorite band.  I'm not even sure if you can just simply say its overlong, its just terrible all around including being longer than 0 seconds.

The Flower Kings - The Truth Will Set You Free

Could have been a really good song at about 17 or 18 minutes instead of a bloated mess that drags on and on and on.

Not arguing with you, because I get it, it's not a great song, but I think I'm one of the few people in this world not named "Harris" that doesn't outright hate it.  I kind of dig it, at least in the context of the album (and I like the full version better than the edit).

Absolutely NOT. That second half (I always call it "coda") is just BEAUTIFUL and I almost like it better than the far more famous first part.

First thing that popped into my head is Steve Hackett - Shadow Of The Hierophant. Great song, finale a little too long.

In contrast to that, sometimes lengthy parts or songs can be extremely fascinating, like many Tangerine Dream Songs.
Or that haunting percussion/female vocal part of Mike Oldfield's Incantations, Part Two. I could listen to that part for hours.

I do feel like Truth is overlong, but I feel like every part fits so I'd have trouble figuring out what to shorten/remove.

The first song that popped into my head was Church Of Your Heart by TFK. The first 6 minutes or so is one of my all-time favorite sections of music from them, but the song drags for an extra 3 minutes of unnecessary stuff.

Beatles - I Want You/She's So Heavy (that outro just never seems to end and over-extends its welcome)
DT - A Nightmare to Remember (I like a lot of portions of that song, but there's a lot of fat that could have been trimmed off of that one to make a better more-concise song)

How did I forget this one? I feel like this is a pretty good 9 minute song with 7 minutes of repetitive garbage surrounding it. Same with most of the 12-step songs imo.

There's a whole lot of Oldpeth that should've been left on the cutting room floor to be honest. Even though I do love those first two albums more than the stuff that came after.

Beardfish - Sleeping in Traffic - 30 minute song  Great song that takes all kinds of twist and turns.

In the Gada da Vida -  Back when I listened while smoking weed, the song did not feel overlong, but now it does.
