What are your fav DT lyrics?
« on: May 16, 2021, 07:01:10 AM »
My first thread - please excuse me if this has been done before! I looked through 4 pages of index and couldn't see one so posted this.
Mine are from IT:-
"To really feel the joy in life
You must suffer through the pain
When you surrender to the light
You can face the darkest days
If you open up your eyes
And you put your trust in love
On those cold and endless nights
You will never be alone
Passion glows within your heart
Like a furnace burning bright
Until you struggle through the dark
You'll never know the joy in life"

The first part of the songs lyrics lead into this and are also meaningful.

My favorite line of any DT song is from Lines in the sand:

"Living comes much easier, once we admit we're dying"

Overall song, it’s Learning To Live, it’s one of the reasons that it’s my favourite DT song.

There’s a section in Metropolis pt 1 as well that I love which is as follows:

I was told there's a miracle
For each day that i try
I was told there's a new love that's born
For each one that has died
I was told there'd be no one to call on
When i feel alone and afraid
I was told if you dream of the next world
You'll find yourself
Swimming in a lake of fire
As a child
I thought i could live without pain
Without sorrow
But as a man
I've found it's all caught up with me
I'm asleep yet i'm so afraid

Lifting Shadows Off A Dream

“As the rain is pouring down
Tears of sorrow wash his mind
Drifting with the current
This stream of life flows on
He seems alone and silent
Waiting on his hands and knees
The chill of winter's darkness sits quietly”
Can't we find the minds
to lead us closer to the heart?

Definitely the Canadian Rap!
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

FYI it's "You'll never know that you're alive"

I love Illumination Theory for the lyrics alone. And I myself, don't have a problem with the middle calm section. And I feel, that section plays an integral role into the entire message of the song. As that part to me, represents the "darkest days" where you come to see the light, and give in to love, and learn that you never knew the joy of life, until that moment you were in the dark, suffering through the pain.

I also enjoy the message in Along For The Ride. How we are all living this ride of life, and we are all just going along for the ride. These lyrics I am posting are, for me, really inspiring and hopeful. Also, JR's strings during that section are awesome.

"I will not live under a shadow of fear
Never be crippled by chaos and doubt
Fall prey to your madness

I am not shattered
Out of the ashes I rise
Knowing that nothing is stronger than faith
Finding hope in our hopeless lives"

My all time favorite DT lyrics are from my all time favorite DT song.

Scarred

"Do you feel you don't know me anymore?
And do you feel I'm afraid of your love?
And how come you don't want me asking?
And how come my heart's not invited?
You say you want everyone happy
Well, we're not laughing.

And how come you don't understand me?
And how come I don't understand you?
Thirty years say we're in this together
So open your eyes.

People in prayer for me
everyone there for me
Sometimes I feel I should face this alone
My soul exposed
It calms me to know that I won't"

I don't know how they can be so proud of winning with them odds. - Little Big Man

My favorite DT lyrics are in Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, Scarred, and Lines In The Sand.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

To me without a doubt the final of the Shattered Fortress. In one way for me being religious and the prayer is therefore meaningful. But even more due to Portnoys addiction to alcohol and the struggle he’s been throught.

“Help me be a channel of Thy peace...

that were there’s hatred, I may bring love...
were there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness...
that were there is discord, I may bring harmony...
were there is error, I may bring the truth...
were there is doubt, I may bring faith...”
Wim pointed out something I don't see mentioned very often...

Although I do love the more poetic lyrics, I do enjoy some Petrucci cheese, like TCoT and ITPOE.

Critique of lyrics is a funny thing - I’ve seen so many posts over the years about “shite” lyrics from DT but they’ve written some beautiful things (already cited) especially JP and JM. My fave is still Moore’s poetry in Only A Matter Of Time.

I agree. When I say cheese, I mean it with the best of intentions. I don't think lyrics have to be beautiful and poetic 100% of the time.

A lot of my favorites have been posted already, so I'll just second the mentions from Lines in the Sand, Scarred, Trial of Tears, and Lifting Shadows.

This Is The Life:

Some of us choose to live gracefully
Some can get caught in the maze
And lose their way home
Memories will fade
Time races on
What will they say
After you're gone
This is the life we belong to
Our gift divine
Our gift divine

Step after step we try controlling our fate
When we finally start living it's become too late

Always gives me chills.

Definitely the Canadian Rap!

<clickbait>Only TRUE Dream Theater fans understand this reference!</clickbait>

I don't see this song referenced much in these kinds of threads but once you've experienced certain things in life New Millennium hits deep.

This is a song with very straight forward lyrics, but yet so good!

It just really hit me, as a father, a husband, a son, now a stepfather (of children that don't have a relationship with their real father, who is firmly "in the maze"); it's a song that I not only enjoy on it's face, but which makes me think and reflect each time I hear it.

I think DT's lyrics were far better and more notable early in their career (not just because Kevin Moore was there, but JP was more consistent back then, and even Portnoy had a few good ones), but This Is the Life is definitely a standout.

Favorites lyrically would be Learning to Live, Voices, Surrounded, Space Dye Vest, Pull Me Under, Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, Take Away My Pain and A Change of Seasons.
