From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

FAIZOFF-Shepherd

"Real interesting and gripping story, with a neat twist at the end."

I really enjoyed this concept and narrative. You did a great job with this, and I loved the flashback at the end. Even though it wasn't my favorite batch of songs this round, it's one of my favorite concepts.

Faizoff, yours was the other excruciating decision to not award a Bonus Point. You really had this together.

1.    White Lion – Warsong  8.0

Love that main riff for the verses. Reminds me of Extreme.

2.    Sabaton – Primo Victoria  8.5

Definiutely a cool tune. Vivid imagery. Quite a romp.

3.    Sepultura – Territory 8.0

I've never gotten into Sepultura, mainly because of the vocals. Other than that, it has a great old school feel. A bit too mid tempo too.

4.    Derek Sherinian – God of War 8.5

Really cool song. Didn't expect that.

5.    Orphaned Land – The Simple Man 8.0

I've never been able to get into Orphaned Land because of the Middle Eastern influence. i was enjoying this until it cropped up. Too bad. I was liking it.

6.    Primus – Too Many Puppies 7.5

I've heard Primus before, and I have the same complaint. This sounds so gimmick-y.

7.    Saigon Kick – Fields of Rape  8.0

Was pleasantly surprised by this. Nice guitar solo. Cool song.

8.    Dixie Chicks – Travelin’ Soldier  8.0

While not my thing, you can't say that this song is not solid for what it is.

9.  Billy Joel – Goodnight Saigon  ** 8.0

Obviously the epic here, and I tried so damn hard to like it more than I actually do. I don't know. I just don't buy Billy Joel's believability on this, if that makes sense.

PUPPIES-The Man From Earth

"What an absolutely killer playlist of tunes."

That was quite a wild story. But what an amazing set of tunes. This is a great playlist. The Wretched tune was great as was most of this constant album. Loved the Skull Fist, and Spirit Adrift. I think you could've trimmed this by a 3 or 4 songs though.

1. Between the Buried and Me - Goodbye to Everything   Not scored

Really nice intro piece.

2. Wretched - Beyond the Gate    9.0

This is a fantastic instrumental. I love how this is the first real song after the effective intro.

3. Candlemass - Black Stone Wielder  8.0

This was pretty good. Cool groove. Vocals were OK. Song was a bit too long.

4. Skull Fist - Sign of the Warrior    8.5

Old school TAC metal!!

5. Between the Buried and Me - Parallax   Not Scored

Really spacey.

6. Spirit Adrift - Angel and Abyss **    8.5

This is a cool album that I've checked out this year. Pup snuck this in knowing it. But it's a good move that pays off.

7. Inglorious - High Flying Gypsy  8.0

Nice song as a change of pace. Didn't love it totally but it is pretty good.

8. Tiluland - Arctic Twilight   8.0

Makes note for next K-Lox Roulette.

9. SIG:AR:TYR - Helluland    8.5

Really liked the groove on this. Had a folky feel to it.

10. Angra - Winds of Destination   8.5

Love the upbeatness of this. I need to check this album. I got Temple in my last roulette and loved it. Amazing guitar solo in this. Really strong track.

11. Running Wild - Riding the Storm  8.5

Love this. Great tune.

12. Candlemass - Through the Infinitive Halls of Death   8.0

Holy Black Sabbath, Batman!

13. Slice the Cake - Ghengis Tron, Come Home, We Miss You!  7.5

I mean, it's not bad, just really all over the place, and I don't care for electronical music.

14. Darkest Hour - Tranquil  8.0

I like Darkest Hour, and were one of the first bands I attempted to tolerate harshies. Musically, they are so good, but those are not really the harshies I care for.

15. Vektor - Tetrastructural Minds  8.5

Kick ass tune. Really. I don't love the vocals, but I should still try and check them out.
16. Between the Buried and Me - Goodbye to Everything Reprise  Not Scored.

17. Persuader - Twisted Eyes  8.5

Best Blind Guardian tune ever.

18. Polyphia - Paradise    7.5

An odd way to end this metal fest,. Didn't like the beginning. Ended with some great guitar.

19. Between the Buried and Me - Life In Velvet 8.5

Really nice!

LETHEAN- Title TBA

"I was laughing my ass off at that story. And not that you've sent bad music, because you haven't, but this is easily the best and most interesting music you've sent."

Great story and I appreciated it. I loved that you used all of us in the story somehow. That was neat. Without checking the scores, I feel like this was your strongest EP. The Diabolical Masquerade was awesome, as was The Ocean.

1. Ayreon - Age of Shadows**  8.0

Is this a group vocal thingy? I think I hear Barlow and Jorn. I find this merely solid. It doesn't stand out to me all that much. Songs like this just seem to be written to shoehorn different singers in.

2. Swallow the Sun - The Justice of Suffering  8.0

Kind of a cool genre I've been dabbling in. I'm not sure this song is quite my thing though. Loved the cleans, and while I didn't mind the harshies, I think the song itself is a bit too much of a mid tempo sludgefest.

3. Pantheon I - Ascending 8.5

I liked this a lot more than the STS. Lots more variety and contrast in a shorter song.

4. October Tide - Losing Tomorrow Transitional  8.0

I went back and forth not scoring this or not. Basically scoring it keeps it as the status quo anyway. I first considered this a transitional piece, and it is, I guess. But it's more than that. The more I listened to it, it carved out its own space.

5. Ayreon - Waking Dreams  8.5

I liked this more than Age Of Shadows, tbh. It just seems to have more character.

6. The Ocean - Devonian: Nascent  9.0

Wow, man, this song is awesome. Totally kick ass.

7. Diabolical Masquerade - Not of Flesh, Not of Blood
Diabolical Masquerade - Intact with a Human Psyche
Diabolical Masquerade - Keeping Faith  9.0

I'm grading this trilogy as one song. This was fantastic and gave me goosebumps. Reminded me of Michael Schenker is spots.

8. Long Distance Calling - The Nearing Grave  8.0

Nice song that is pretty chill. A bit too much maybe. the first few minutes takes a bit to get through. It's nice enough though. i didn't not like it. A fantastic last two minutes to close this out.

KATTELOX-Alone In A Storm

"I'm not sure I have ever been more moved by music as I was while listening to this."

Brilliant Mike. Thank you for doing this.

1. Enya - If I Could Be Where You Are  9.0

Fucking chilling.

2. Florence + the Machine - Third Eye 8.0

3. Randy Newman - I Think It's Going To Rain Today  8.0

4. Kacey Musgrave - Rainbow 9.0

Impressive. Goosebumps.

5. Explosions In The Sky - The Only Moment We Were Alone 9.0

It goes on, like a moment you'd never want to end. A Killer, man.

6. Leonard Cohen - Come Healing  8.5

7. Florence + the Machine - Shake It Out  8.0

8. Florence + the Machine - All This And Heaven Too 8.5

Really moving.

9. Enya - I Could Never Say Goodbye** 10

What can I say, man.

10. Enya - Sancta Maria 10

Amen, Brother.

JINGLEBOY-A-TACalypse-Prophecy Of The Damned

"I liked how the story evolved and I loved the ending. I was reading along listening and I found it quite clever. Quite a journey."

In the end, I think using the Director's Cut actually helped your score. I'm not going to lie...this was long. But the playlist was quite solid. So that was good. I liked the concept a lot, and I love the "back to square one" styled ending. Best tunes were Lord and Serious Black (which I know), but you did pick their best song at least.  Animations and Kepler Ten were really good. Odin felt really out of place, especially sonically and pace wise. Love the artwork!

1:1 Amadeus Awad’s Eon / The Book of Gates 8.0

This song is pretty solid for the most part, but seems to run out of steam a bit 2/3's of the way through.

1:2 Danger Angel / All The King’s Horses (extended cut) 8.5

Great tune. Awesome solo. I saved this after Brent's podcast too..

1:3 Sixx:A.M. / Prayers for the Damned** 8.0

Hidden Alter Bridge track?

1:4 Section A / The Seventh Sign (extended cut)  8.0

It starts off excellent, but honestly, it's a bit too long for what it does. The keyboard solo is way to wonky.

2:1 Shadow Circus / The Horsemen Ride 7.5

This song is blah! But I can appreciate its relevance to the story.

2:2 Pagan’s Mind / In Brilliant White Light (extended cut) 8.5

At first I was going to consider this a transitional piece, but it really does come alive quite nicely.

2:3 Orden Ogan / F.E.V.E.R. 8.5

This song rocks. I like it a lot.

2:4 Kepler Ten / Red Skies Rise (extended cut) 8.5

This is super. Really captivating.

2:5 Animations / Demons of War 9.0

For a minute I thought you sent Animotion.
This is actually excellent. Loved it.

2:6 Ostura / Darker Shade of Black (extended cut) 8.0

A lot to like about this song. Just not sure I love it. the best part was the solo around the 6 minute mark?

2:7 Walls of Babylon / Starving Soul 8.5

This is an excellent song. I liked all of it. Really cool guitar harmonies in the solo section.

2:8 Vanish / The Pale King (extended cut)  8.5

Are you sure I didn't send them to you??

2:9 Damnations Day / Invisible, The Dead 8.0

Invisible, The Song.

3:1 Odin / Judgement Day (extended cut) 7.5

Not nearly up to snuff with the rest of this album.

3:2 Lord / The End of Days 9.0

Best song of the album!

3:3 Serious Black / Setting Fire to the Earth (extended cut) 9.0

Great song, you slick motherfucker.

3:4 Ten / The Elysian Fields (extended cut) 8.5

I missed this the first time around, but this song is tremendous. Seriously.

4:1 Prospekt / In the Shadows of the Earth 8.5

This song is fantastic. A little DT styled moment there. Great tune.

4:2 Damnations Day / To Begin Again 8.5

Much better than the previous DD song.

4:3 Sixx:A.M. / Rise of the Melancholy Empire (extended cut)8.5

This ends real strong. I wasn't expecting much, but this was excellent.

ARIICH-The Liberator

"This was simply incredible. A great bunch of songs, but also so supportive of the narrative. Really thought out, and it presents well."

I really liked this concept, especially where it's more individual. I wish I liked Scar Symmetry more than I do. Mind Machine was just OK, and I really don't like their harshies. The One l Cinema is interesting. reminds me of last year's Branch Arterial album. The winning song here is the title track, The Liberator from Disillusion. I actually have this saved on Spotify already. That's a good call.
Great beginning and ending Human Abstract songs.
Very coherent story with supportive songs.

1. The Human Abstract - Elegiac  8.5

Great intro to the EP/album. Really feels like something grand is about to happen. It's short, but felt complete, and not as a simple intro/transitional piece.

2. Scar Symmetry - Mind Machine 8.0

I like this song, but I would say it's merely solid. Nothing wrong with it, but it's not likely to get me to follow up.

3. One I Cinema - Insidious 8.5

Half Branch Arterial and half Myles Kennedy. This is a song that is kind of addictive actually. Great chorus.

4. Myrath - I Want to Die 8.0

Love how this fits with the narrative. As a song, it's decent. I'm not a fan of Myrath as I really don't care for Middle Eastern influence in my music.

5. Scar Symmetry - Oscillation Point 8.0

This is a cool song. I don't know if I'm in love with it, but it's nice enough. Great cleans. Not so great harshies. It's better than Mind Machine, but the harsh vocals will likely keep me away from this band.

6. One I Cinema - The Mirror  8.0

This one kind of goers by without much fanfare. It's nice and all, but doesn't seem to stand out.

7. Tremonti - Make It Hurt 8.0

Similar to above. It's a modern rock song and I have trouble connecting with those. I do like the chorus though.

8. Myrath - Get Your Freedom Back 8.5

This song is much better. Reminds me a little of Odd Dimension. The Eastern influence is not really there. This song is excellent.

9. Disillusion - The Liberation** 9.0

This song is so epic. Really drives the story home. This song is long, but never overstays its welcome.

10. Tremonti - Providence  8.0

I feel like my best listen to this was the first listen. It's a good song, but it's a style that I have a hard time grabbing onto. Storywise, it's perfect though.

11. The Human Abstract - Antebellum  8.5

Wow, this song is excellent. I like it. Lots going on, but it's very consistent. love the opening.

WOLFKING-Crown Of Thorns

" I liked the story, and I can appreciate the inspiration for it, but I have to be honest. I was a bit disappointed by the songs."

Not sure what I was thinking after my first listen. there were points where my ears were completely glazed over.
As usual, you find a bunch of tunes that hit my sweet spot. I liked your story a lot, and the relationship of the story to the songs was well thought out. I really enjoyed the EP overall. Lord is the best on here, and I'm pretty sure you got me on that In Flames album before. Guess I gotta go get it. Expect them to be banned next time. So much metal goodness throughout. Loved the EP title too.

1.   Evergrey – The Awakening  Not Scored

Very interesting intro piece.

2.   Evergrey – King of Errors 8.0

Fairly average song. Tom Englund just does nothing for me vocally. So undynamic.

3.   U.D.O. – Holy 8.5

What I like about this is that it sounds so much like Accept, especially in the verses.

4.   Dream Evil – Evilution  8.5

This guy has some pipes, man!  Totally rocking tune right in the wheelhouse.

5.   Evergrey – A Touch of Blessing 8.5

I did like this song. Nice solo, almost Schenker-ish. This song has a lot of character.

6.   Lord – Reborn**  9.0

This is how it's done. METAL!!! Glorious instrumental part.

7.   Firewind – Back to the Throne  8.0

Great guitar playing, but I don't know, there's something about Firewind that generally underwhelms me.

8.   Eluveitie - King  8.5

Excellent tune. The vocals don't really bother me. But this is totally kick ass.

9.   Sepultura – Arise  7.5

Can't say I liked that a lot. Old school riffage.

10.   Mors Principium Est – Monster in Me  8.5

This is a great tune. Vocals are fine. The music is amazing.

11.   Trivium – Betrayer  8.5

Once you get through the short amount of harshies, this is a really good song. Love the Maidenesque outro.

12.   Trivium – Sever the Hand  8.5

Same as above. Any more harshies and the song would have to be downgraded, but they are kept in check, and the rest of the song is amazing.

13.   Mors Principium Est – The Awakening  Not scored.

Transitional piece. This gave me goosebumps, especially as it portrays this part of the story.

14.   Mors Principium Est – Departure 8.0

Not a fan of these vocals. Solid tune otherwise.

15.   In Flames – Artefacts of the Black Rain 8.5

I need this album.

16.   Solution .45 – Heavy Lies the Crown 8.0

Totally see the narrative, but I found the song itself a bit choppy. Awesome outro though.

I almost removed the polyphia and Slice the Cake songs right before I sent it to you. I guess I really should have. Wonder if that would have earned me a bonus point and where I would have landed in the final standings...  :corn

Congrats Kade! :metal

Very pleased to have come joint second, thanks for having me Tim. Never really expected to do this well before it started but had a real blast and glad I got to introduce you to some music you liked!

And how funny that after all the speculation, me, Kade and Chad all got identical scores in the last round. :lol

Congrats Kade!! Well earned first place.

I'm quite impressed by how well mine scored and particularly with the 10 for Enya there. I like the very concise thoughts since you already summed it up very well a couple days ago. Thanks again for giving me the chance to make that. Going to show it to my mom in the near future.

I did much better in this roulette than I expected to. :) damn... was mine the single highest scoring ep factoring in bonuses?

Yeah, and it was totally legit. You had less songs and Chad had more, with Kade in the middle. It just added up to the same average score.

You sent in this round first and after getting it, I thought Kade was in trouble honestly. In fact, my first run through of his album, as evidenced by my first impression, just kind of flew by without much fanfare. But ultimately those songs were excellent.

My last roulette, which was scored anonymously also had Kade and Ruslan 1-2.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

Congratulations Wolfking!

I'm quite happy to be part of a 4-way tie for third in this round. :)

TAC, did you notice that the singer from Katatonia was on all of the tracks (that have vocals)?

I'm real happy to hear that. I was going to tell you that you should share that with your Mom, but I didn't want to be douchey about it.

You know, as parents, the most maddening thing is that we are always wondering, but never really know what our kids are thinking.

I can't even begin to say how true this is.  I am very close to my daughter, and yet there are moments (more now that she's 18 and out of the house in college) where I feel there's a disconnect.  And there are moments within that where she'll send me a song, and BAM! like clouds parting.

If she sent me something like this, I'd be speechless with gratitude.

FUCK YEAH!!!! Thanks everyone.  I knew that impression was for mine but glad it opened up a bit on more listens Tim.  Stoked but I was worried.  I thought Ariich might have gotten me.

Winning both Tim's roulettes in the same year is a great accomplishment I'm pretty proud of.

Tim, this was a blast and with my 70 odd hour work weeks at the moment, this was a PERFECT release and escape, so thank you!!!

Thanks to everyone else, a great group of lads to play this with.  It's very sad it's come to an end.

Oh, and get that In Flames album, it's unbelievable, a classic.

I would like to ask Faiz, Katt, Rich, Ev *NOT* delete their playlists for a while (including the round 1-4 playlists), as Tim has passed a few of them on to me, and I have them saved to my library still to listen to.

Congrats Kade... you obviously know where Tim's wheelhouse is.

I'm not surprised at the final round result - and glad to see the bonus points didn't make/break the winner.  Although, I'm unclear how Buddy got completely eliminated without bonus points.   :lol

I think the epitome of a great concept is when a song is heard and appreciated MORE than it would be on it's own.  Mike, you are clearly the winner here, as there is no way the universe that I live in that Tim would rate an Enya song 10/10 in-and-of-itself.  For the ones that I listened to so far, all of you have one or more songs that I appreciate more *because* of the concept, and probably would've dismissed/discarded quickly if listening to the songs independently.  That's the real beauty of this kind of round, and the kind of thing I'm trying to figure out how to capture when I host my next one.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad

Wait. I know I’m the asshole who’s late to the party, but... Enya??

Anyway, I’m glad you are able to appreciate the music. I play a few of her pieces on the piano.

I had written something up leading to my album's title, but decided to hold off on the off chance you didn't realize what I was doing.  I'll have to find that and post it a little bit later. :)
