7 out of 8 so far, and 4 out of 8 would have won you the roulette. FYI. :P

I am stunned this is still going on  :lol
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Post-roulette updates, part 13/13
Category 1: Prelim elimination (complete)
Category 2: Compilation artists (complete)
Category 3: Concept album artists (complete)
Category 4: Cyril's extravaganza (complete)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Puppies
Havukruunu – Kelle Surut Soi (2017)

Category 3: Concept album artists
There's lots about this that I like, but on balance overall I feel pretty similarly to the two songs from your concept album. Musically it's mostly solid black metal, quite enjoyable for a lot of it in fact and there's some nice melodic stuff going on. I think it's let down quite a lot by the production, which feels very rough around the edges. It might intentionally be done that way and I think it can work sometimes, but here it just makes it hard to really immerse myself in it. Especially some of the clean vocal sections I think would have really benefited from clearer sound which would have given it more atmosphere. I'm also not especially keen on these harsh vocals - they're not bad at all, just don't find them very interesting.

Luoto
Oddland – The Treachery Of Senses (2012)

Category 3: Concept album artists
I've ended up digging this a fair bit more than I expected, and suspect you were unfortunate with your song choices. Ire works pretty well as a closer and I provably enjoy it more here, but I also find it to be among the weaker songs. A lot of the album has more in the way of good hooks, as well as a rhythmic groove that I find more engaging than the songs from your concept album. There are hints of other bands at times but all in all it's a fairly unique sound. And actually in context Ire has a nice moodiness to it that works well after some of the grander songs that come before it. So yeah, this was a pleasant surprise.

Cyril
Adrift – Pure (2019)

Category 4: Cyril's post-roulette extravaganza
Hmm I dunno, you say this is all about the grooves, but I'm not really feeling it. I mean, yeah there's some decent stuff especially in some of the more atmospheric sections (like the opening of Confluence of Fire), there's some tight riffing and a pretty punchy sound. The other thing I appreciate is the uniqueness of black metal style screams over this kind of sludge metal, not a combination I've heard before and there's a fair bit of it here. Sadly that doesn't work for me either. Basically apart from the production, I find pretty much everything about it to be adequate but lacking.
Rating: 6.5/10

Cyril
Spires – The Whisperer (2014)

Category 4: Cyril's post-roulette extravaganza
Yeah I think I'm in agreement with you on this - I like it but I don't love it. It's generally very enjoyable - nice varied and slightly quirky prog metal that takes in quite a few different influences. There's some really solid stuff peppered throughout too, especially in the big epics, although nothing that especially stands out (after three listens, I've not really found anything very memorable). And some of it I find a little dull. Not sure I can point to anything particularly wrong with it, I'm just not finding it especially engaging. And yet when I listen to it, I enioy it well enough. Bit of a weird one really.

Train
Sleep Token – Sundowning (2019)

Category 4.5: Trainy’s special bonus submission
OK so your post-roulette stuff has been excellent and stronger than almost everything you sent in the roulette. :lol This is another great one. Really interesting mix of styles, kind of reminds me of Frost but the poppy side is more indie and the rock/metal side is heavier, going into djent territory and harsh vocals at times. The latter came as a surprise the first time as tonally there's such an indie vibe to their music. It could have been jarring, but it works well and makes it a very dynamic and exciting album.
Rating: 8.5/10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

So that really is the end now! There were more concept album artists, but they didn't interest me enough to want to check out a whole album at this stage. I'll also spend the time between now and my next roulette digging into definitely all the 8+/10 artists and probably some others. Thanks again everyone for introducing me to so much great music! :heart

Haha, sorry for that, I’m much better at spontaneous recs than roulettes, and Sleep Token didn’t have a full length until last month, but I’ve been a huuge fan of the song Jaws they released for over a year, they also have some good EPs and a cover of Hey Ya! by OutKast :lol

I love that they’re somehow able to mix RNB, trap, indie, post rock and metalcore without being jarring (Give into Gods is a bit sudden though)
