Rank and rate all tracks from Rush's Moving Pictures
« on: October 22, 2019, 03:32:57 PM »
My order of preference with ratings would be:

1. Red Barchetta - 5/5 stars
2. The Camera Eye - 5/5
3. Limelight - 5/5
4. YYZ - 4.5/5
5. Tom Sawyer - 4/5
6. Vital Signs - 4/5
7. Witch Hunt - 3.5/5

My favorite track is definitely RB and least favorite - WH.

How would you rate and rank these 7 tracks?

1. Limelight - 5/5
2. Tom Sawyer - 4.5/5
3. Red Barchetta - 4.5/5
4. YYZ - 4/5
5. The Camera Eye - 3.0/5
6. Vital Signs - 2.5/5
7. Witch Hunt - 2.0/5

25.5/7 = 3.64/5 album which is pretty spot on to my mental ranking of the album. Nice.

All of side 1 are 9/9.  It's a perfect album side.  I could listen to it on a loop for the rest of my life.

I'd give The Camera Eye 8/9.

Vital Signs is 7.4/9.

Witch Hunt is 6.95/9.

(why must everything be out of 5 or 10?)

I don't get your kind of rating. What does 6.95/9 mean?

It means 7.72/10 or 77.2/100, or if you don’t like decimals, 772(rounded)/1000.

Red Barchetta is probably my favorite as well.

But every song on side 1 is 10/10, and every song on side 2 is 9/10.

While taken individually some of these songs suffer (which is how I ranked them above), I think in the context of the album they all work perfectly.

That's a great point.  I LOVE Hemispheres, but that's in part because La Villa Strangiato is my favorite Rush song ever.  This album, while I gave it high marks, is very much greater than the sum of it's parts.  Except for Vital Signs, of course.  :)

As "Moving Pictures" is my favorite album of all times , it's kind of hard not to give all of the songs 5/5. Being very strict , I would say:

1.Limelight 5/5
2.Red Barchetta 5/5
3.YYZ 5/5
4.Tom Sawyer 5/5
5.The Camera Eye 4,5/5
6.Witch Hunt 4,5/5
7.Vital Signs 4/5

One of the neat things about Rush during this period is that you could watch their transition in real time.  You could see the tentacles reaching, as you had songs on that album that very definitely could have been on earlier albums, and song(s) (well, basically Vital Signs) that could have been on later albums.   The only other band that I can name where that is so obvious is Judas Priest in the Hell Bent For Leather - Screaming For Vengeance era.

That's a great way to put it.  Some bands do sudden stylistic changes, but Rush's was gradual.  A band like Radiohead went from OK Computer to Kid A, and the Rush equivalent would have been had they gone from Permanent Waves straight to Power Windows.

Witch Hunt is 6.95/9.

I don't get your kind of rating. What does 6.95/9 mean?

What's the mystery?  Instead of rating the songs out of 5 or 10, I decided to rate them out of 9.

6.95/9 is roughly equivalent to 10.04/13 or 2.426/π.

What I find awesome about this band is that they never stopped changing. Every album was a step further after the previous one. Even the latest ones.
