also i wanna correct you on one thing - i did end up getting that gunship album and there are a few other songs there i think are quite good, though nothing close to tech noir. and then i think dark all day is even better - the song, not the album, most of the rest of that album is the one that didn't do much for me. shrug.

anyways i'm about to listen to your album here shortly (& i'll post my thoughts on it and bear ghost after)

Glad my choice to steer clear of bonus themes paid off!

Don't worry, there's no other chiptune on the album, although it's quite varied and a bit quirky so there might well be other sounds you find annoying.

But I think you'll mostly enjoy it quite a bit if you liked those songs that much.

I definitely do think they have a bit of a fun. vibe to the overall album (but much more riff/guitar-driven, like I said), although I accept it's not very much the case with these songs. I'd be interested to see what you think once you've heard the whole thing.

yeah, don't think anything on this is quite as good as she-wrecks, and there's a few tracks i'm kinda eehhh on & the overall kinda of goofy vibe is a bit offputting but the overall sound is still pretty good and i definitely wanna revisit it. i'm not super surprised nothing else lives up to what you sent though.

yeah you were pretty much right about this one though. a lot of the rest of this is... not really my thing, it's just straightforward synthpop with an 80's worship sound, not that dissimilar from gunship really. except uuuhhh pretty much every song seems rather overlong. i listened up through massacre & then skimmed through the rest after (ended up listening to the last two tracks which were pretty nice) but i mean. it's an 86 or so minute album in a style that just doesn't do a ton for me.

other two album listens i wanna do will come tomorrow or tuesday if i don't have time for both tomorrow. they're behemoth and psychonaut ftr, i like that susanne sundfor song but it doesn't make me wanna check out the album either unfortunately

Yeah I could and should have gone with one of the nog instrumental songs I think, it’s actually an incredible album in my opinion, I was just 1) scared of your opinion since we don’t seem to match on tastes that much anymore and 2) hunting for bonus berries

They are mixed vocals with kind of a Dvne / Mastodon vibe in the cleans and high fry screams with the harshes.

Also big disagree on She Wrecks being the best song on the Bear Ghost album. I recommend their debut EP which is called something like ‘Your Parents Are Marginally Disappointed in Your Music Taste’. That one’s basically a more consistent version of Blasterpiece

Yeah I'd definitely say give Blasterpiece another couple of listens at some point. Like with artists such as Devin Townsend, the goofyness stands out quite noticeably on first listen, but once the album settles in it's not actually all that goofy really and you can dig under the surface and get a ton out of it.

Well, I tried I guess? I kinda figured this would either go down well or not at all, so I'm not that surprised to be honest. No, I do not take the band seriously, but as far as this kind of ridiculous unplayable tech-death stuff goes, I think this band (or this album, I should say) does a better job than the other stuff I've heard. Like you even said, it's not bad at all, but I can see you not wanting to come back to it - which admittedly I haven't really done either.

So, on to some other stuff. I'll send tonight.

small snafu where i originally allowed a song off an album i'd heard but then checked and i actually specifically called out that album on the partially banned list so i had to swap out for the backup i was sent, hangman's updated to reflect that. starting listens in a minute, anyways

Round 2 First Impressions

It’s one of those cases where the sound isn’t necessarily that fresh, but it’s just done really damn well and works all the better for it.

Dunno, on first listen I’m just not feeling the vibe of this one, though it’s not unpleasant to listen to either.

I like the general vibe and sound of this one but it really feels incomplete and unsatisfying by the end.

It’s nice for what it is but I don’t know if it’s quite working for me in the way that similar stuff has in the past.

I expected to struggle with this one going into it, and I got basically exactly what I expected, but we’ll see if it has room to grow on me regardless.

A sound I both quite like and feel is a bit muted at the same time, though I could see this growing on me even despite it being an early favorite.

You’re likely to get a pass due to positive comparisons to other stuff I’ve already been sent, but I also don’t see this one blowing me away either.

It’s not necessarily a style that’s ever going to do exceptionally well with me, but it’s a pretty fun one regardless.

Fundamentally nothing wrong with it and it’s the kind of thing that’s most obviously up my alley but at the same time it isn’t really standing out much either.

Another one where I come away from my first listen liking but not really loving this, though again I see room for it to grow on me.

Definitely feels like a weaker round than the last one on first listen. A few songs here I like a solid bit regardless though. Maybe I'm just not in the mood right now, too, who knows.
