Roulette Structure:

10 players max, no prelim rounds. I’m giving preference to, in order:
1.   ariich again because he won the last two and I’m just stuck with him now
2.   People who have never played in my roulettes before (excluding preliminary rounds)
3.   People who did not play in my last roulette (excluding the preliminary round)
4.   Everyone else

There will be up to 10 rounds followed by an EP round. There will be eliminations before the EP round, but I’ll explain that when I get to the scoring aspect of the roulette.

Standard Rounds:
One song per round, no strict length limit but please be reasonable. Generally the best-scoring songs sit in the 7 to 10 minute range for me, 15+ minute epics don’t tend to sit as well with me anyways.

EP Round:
Up to 5 songs by at least 3 different artists, with a minimum length of 25 minutes and a maximum length of 45 minutes. Interlude tracks are allowed provided that they do not exceed 3 minutes in length, but they will not be scored or counted as one of the 3 required artists.

Rules:
1. Send songs via PM. Highest preference is Spotify if available, then direct MP3 links, followed by YouTube or any other sharing site as a last resort. For EPs, however, I would prefer direct MP3 downloads to Spotify playlists.
2. The banned list is color-coded for your convenience.
Red means bands I have heard enough from to know I dislike them in general.
Orange means bands I may or may not own music from but don't especially stand out to me.
Teal means bands I have looked into and plan to get an album from, or have an album but haven’t listened to extensively yet.
Yellow means bands I like and own music from but don’t quite love.
Green means one of my favorites.
3. There is no limitation on how many people are allowed to send the same artist in a round. However, if the same song is sent by multiple people, only the first submission will be accepted.
4. I reserve the right to reject any song or artist not on the banlist, most likely because I either know the specific song or the band probably should be on my banlist (which I will update if so). I highly recommend auditing your EP candidates ahead of time. It’s no fun to have your EP ready to go but it turns out one of the artists is banned so you have to redo it.
5. Submissions are due within 48 hours after the last round’s results have been posted, barring any special exceptions for vacations. Songs sent after 48 hours will receive a one strawberry penalty, and are likely to get less listens and thus less time to grow on me as well.

Tastes:
I feel at this point this section is a little redundant, but I’ll keep it brief:

1.   I like music that emotes. More specifically, music that stirs up intense emotions. Could be just really beautiful tunes, or something intense and powerful. But sounding sterile and lifeless and lacking in emotion is the quickest way to bore me.
2.   I don’t like stuff that sounds “generic”. The definition of this probably varies, but unless you’re doing a well-established sound especially well, it’s highly likely you won’t catch my interest without some element that makes your music stand out. Generic prog metal, generic black metal, literally anything neo-prog, post-rock, post-metal, or especially power metal tends to bore me as there are so many bands in these genres just recycling other bands’ sounds with absolutely no new twist.
3.   Technicality is important but I also don’t like mindless wankery. Animals As Leaders blows. Music that exists to show off blows. Long strings of solos are less interesting than instrumental passages of instruments playing off each other in cool ways.
4.   Most importantly, I need some melody. Be it a catchy chorus, a stick guitar hook, some really groovy basslines, whatever, but I don’t want shrill electronic noises or tuneless death/black/sludge metal songs that are either nonstop dissonant noodling or boring sludgy chugging. These elements both have their places as contrast to melodic moments, but they should rarely if ever be the main feature of a song.

I like metal the most, clearly. Pretty much open to most genres of metal, but I don’t really like sludge metal, thrash metal, grindcore, deathcore, or djent, aside from the kind of stuff I already mentioned above. Black metal has been a favorite in recent years as has the more melodic side of technical death metal. I’ve also been on a post-hardcore kick for about a year and a half. And as ever bands with progressive tendencies tend to be my favorite as they more often than not require a lot of the above mentioned elements to be present.

Aside from metal, uuhh, atmospheric pop stuff tends to be my jam, but I can also dig me some good ambient/drone and darker prog rock. You’re free to challenge my tastes if you want but I’ve had plenty of years and plenty of roulettes to really hone in on the kind of stuff I like and at this point any risk you take is your own liability.

EP Guidelines

Just some things to keep in mind that make a good EP:

1.   Flow – abrupt cuts or awkward transitions between songs takes me out of the experience and makes your EP sound less like a curated work and more like just a random Spotify playlist.
2.   Cohesiveness – I don’t think putting Sigur Ros and Deathspell Omega on the same EP is going to work very well, is all I’m saying. It’s possible to go too far with this, however, thus…
3.   Variety – The more each individual song stands out from the rest, the more interesting each song is, the more likely the EP is to do well. Again, it has to be kept cohesive enough to still work but having three songs doing the same thing is probably going to be at the expense of at least one of those songs losing my interest.

Roulette Grading Scale:

Maybe you’re wondering why this roulette is called Strawberry Fields? It’s because I’m awarding strawberries as the scoring mechanism for this roulette!

Each song will be scored out of 5 strawberries. Any artist that receives 3 or more strawberries will be banned. I’ve also listed roughly what each # of strawberries would map to on a 0 to 10 scale, just for reference. You can’t get negative strawberries.

: Does nothing for me. Completely average or worse. (0 to 5)
: It’s okay but I can’t imagine myself revisiting it. (5 to 6)
: Decent but doesn’t really excite me. (6 to 7)
: Pretty good, might check out this album, might not. (7 to 8)
: Quite good, I’ll definitely check out this album. (8 to 9)
: I love this, please send more like it. (9 to 10)

As well, the round winner will receive a bonus golden strawberry!

It’s worth two strawberries, and it looks shinier too! And it might be poisonous.

The goal of the standard rounds is to amass 30 strawberries. When at least 5 players have received 30 or more strawberries, the roulette will move to the final round and everyone else will be eliminated.

There is a pool of 40 strawberries awarded for bonus themes (see below). I will detail how the bonus theme system works in that section.

The earlier you reach 30 strawberries, the better, as two bonus strawberries for the final round are awarded based on how many rounds early that 30 strawberries are reached. For example, if one reaches 30 strawberries one round before the finals, two will be awarded towards the final round. If one reaches 30 strawberries two rounds before the finals, four will be awarded towards the final round. If one reaches 30 strawberries right before the finals, no bonus strawberries will be awarded.

If 10 rounds pass and the 5 slots have not been filled, the highest-scoring remaining players below 30 will be pulled into the finals. 2 additional strawberries will be awarded to all qualifying players based on half (rounded down) the # of strawberries below 30 that the lowest scoring player in the final has. (For example, 23 strawberries would award qualifying players 3 bonus strawberries, 26 would award 2, etc.) Note that any player who does not qualify will not receive these bonus strawberries, regardless of how close they are to 30.

Scores will be reset (aside from the aforementioned bonus strawberries) before the final round, in which up to 30 strawberries can be earned – 5 for each song sent, and 5 extra strawberries for the overall EP score. Do note that this means that you are free to send EPs with less than 5 songs, but you will automatically lose 5 strawberries per song not sent. If you feel you have four 5/5 songs and a 5/5 flow, with no room to add another song, feel free to give it a shot at your own risk.

In the result of a tie after the EP round, the tiebreaker will be the highest-ranking song across all tied EPs.

Yes, all the graphics are shamelessly stolen from Celeste.

Bonus Themes:

Bonus Themes have strawberry rewards – same as above, normal strawberries worth 1 each, golden strawberries worth 2 for the themes I feel are particularly tricky to do well with. I will judge whether or not a song appropriately fits the bonus theme. Multiple players can try for the same bonus in the same round, but only the highest-ranking song will receive the bonus strawberry.

Bonus themes are a combination of a specific requirement and a genre. The bonus spreadsheet, as well as the remaining available themes, are below:

Bonus themes are not available in the final round.

To meet a bonus theme, your submission need not necessarily be just one genre - for example, a progressive black metal song would still qualify for either of those categories, and a jazzy pop song would qualify for both of those. In particular I honestly am not big on jazz by itself but I love when the genre is blended into rock & metal quite a lot.

Bonus themes must be explicitly requested in the submission PM, otherwise your submission will not go towards a theme.

Banned List:
NOTE: I cannot promise the thoroughness of this list and I will attempt to update it with any artists I missed. There’s a lot I missed and I know that for a fact.

If you want to ask about one of the orange bands, feel free to. I may allow submissions from them if I don’t already know the song. Any other color is 100% off-limits, either I know them well enough to have a strongly formed opinion or I outright have all their albums already.

Also, I recommend checking my RateYourMusic collection. Any artist I've rated 2 or more albums from is banned.

I spent the entire duration (and then some) of my time updating my banned list listening to my concept album for ariich again.

Hell yeah.

Also I'm color-coding participants for the moment based on the rules in the second post, in case you're wondering. I really do not feel like having a prelim round.

Also since I didn't call it out before - you are free to join until 6 PM PST on Friday (October 18th). Anyone who has signed up in-thread but hasn't sent me a song by that point will be removed from the playerlist.

@Katt - no eliminations until the EP round, and technically that's more a "qualification" than elimination :P

EDIT: fuck Lo! is still banned, I can’t believe you don’t like them :(

I averaged a 3rd place finish in the two roulettes, but I suppose I’m grouped as “Everyone Else”.

Im in if there are spots efts after the affirmative action candidates are accepted.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

the earlier you sign up the more likely you'll get in, basically, since i'm ordering based on sign-up time  :P

if it turns out that there's like, 11 or 12 people who want in i may just say screw it and let them all in, anyways. more than that i don't think i can handle.

1.   ariich again because he won the last two and I’m just stuck with him now

...

Green means one of my favorites.
Awwwww.

In it to (inexplicably scrape by and again undeservedly) win it.

:metal

With the bonus strawberries, just to check my understanding is right - if you're the only person to send that theme in any given round, you get the strawberries regardless of the score you get. So if, say, I sent some 1940s jazz that you hated, I'd get no points for the main score but a bonus golden strawberry?

I'm not planning to send you 1940s jazz btw

I might. I can't remember who it was but I sent them Sing Sing Sing by Benny Goodman not too long ago  :lol Okay so that's 1930s swing... whatever.

Can a bonus theme only be awarded once in the roulette?

And will I get the strawberry regardless of how well the song scores?
