Double veggie burger with fries sounds good.

I don't think that's what he said.   :)

Correct. It's what I said. But it has to be a good veggie burger, not a beyond or whatever burger.

You got me.

As someone who's never eaten meat (to my knowledge) I got no interest in things being super similar to meat. Though I imagine for people who gave up meat for health reasons, it's good? I dunno.

I just eat Soylent Green and I'm good.

Somewhat related... I saw a tiktokt today, taken from Joe Rogan's podcast with Neil deGrasse Tyson, that apparently humans are more closely related to mushrooms than green plants and it may be why mushrooms taste more like meat than other vegetables.

HAHAHA, you said "a good veggie burger".  Isn't that like saying "a correct Stadler"?  Does that even exist? :)

I've thought about trying vegetarian or even vegan, not sure why, just to see if there are any positive effects.  Not sure I could give up bacon though......

Veggie burgers are excellent as long as you aren't expecting it to taste like a meat burger. I like making this particular recipe, albeit subbing in some Thai curry paste for the one he uses.

I'm not sure why NGT (a physicist) would be speaking about matters of biology, but saying humans are "more closely related to one non-animal family than another sounds a lot like the old email scare that margarine was "one molecule away from plastic" or that sugar is "one molecule away from meth" (or something like that).

NGT has veered very much into "general science education" so its not surprising that he would talk about topics outside his immediate specialisation. He is quite correct though. Here's a pretty accessible video on the topic done by one of my favourite "foodtubers", assisted by people who ARE professors in biology and mycology.

Long story short: Fungi cells look a hell of a lot closer to animal cells than they do plant cells, and fungi also eat similarly to animals (i.e. they digest and ingest other plants/animals by secreting enzymes to break things down) as opposed to plants which get their food by making it via photosynthesis.

Apparently fungi also breathe oxygen? (also from the same clip I saw)

Definitely news to me about this stuff too.

Given that I dropped some recent Cups on Jingle, this may be payback based on my recent comment about this expression in the "mildly exasperating" thread.

Given that the only biology class I EVER took was a marine biology class in college 35 years ago, pretty much every biology fact is new to me.

One of my proudest moments as a father was about 10 years ago.  We were visiting the city where I went to college, and stopped for dinner at a restaurant on our way out of town.  My youngest say a black bean burger on the menu and asked about.  I told them that those are frequently eaten by vegetarians, and they should feel free to order if they were interested.

So the waitress comes to take our order, and my youngest looks up and says, "Can I please get the black bean burger?  Please add bacon."
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

What made me happy today is I took a PTO day tomorrow from work.  I probably wasn't going to easily get away with this because there's been a lot of work and my coworkers are out of the country so I'm really the only one who can handle it this week, but I got the major stuff completed today luckily and our lead network engineer also wanted to take tomorrow off (meaning he's not going to need my help testing things as we've been doing this week).  So I've got a three day weekend, going to AC on Saturday to see Greta Van Fleet and Rival Sons, then heading to NYC on Sunday to see Bad Omens.  Should be a fun weekend.

Let me know how Rival Sons is; I saw them open for Sabbath on their "The End" tour, and they were AWESOME.  Jay Buchanan (RS singer) is a monster live.

My wife, who is a rabbi, is helping a young man prepare for his bar mitzvah and the kid seems to be struggling. He's a big Neil Gaiman fan, so my wife tweeted at him with 0 hopes and Neil asked her to DM him and then wrote a really lovely and decently long message for the kid to inspire him.

Just a really kind act that he didn't have to do. Thanks Neil!
