Today something very cool happened, and it's one of those unpromised gifts of recovery. As most of you know, I'm an active AA member, and today I was working with a new guy who is rather steadfast against the whole God aspect of the program, still clinging to the ideas of spirituality he grew up with (Judeo/Christian ethos). It's a common battle, and I'd hate to take a gather at how many drunks it has killed. I've been working with him for a few months now, and today finally broke through with an idea of spirituality, and spiritual principles, that he could grasp on to. Seeing his eyes light up in relief that he didn't have to be 'religious' and that the spiritual hoop of the program was big enough for him to jump through as well was unbelievable. I was worried about him, but now feel that he has a pretty solid shot at making it, and all it took was just being honest, open, and transparent. Not only will it likely save his ass, it shows him how to pass it on and save other drunks.
So yeah, pretty fucking happy.
