What made you happy today?
« on: September 20, 2019, 12:43:31 PM »
I feel it is necessary to (at last) counterbalance the "What pissed you off today?" thread. Tell us anything that made you happy today, whether it's something you saw (irl, on the Internet, wherever) that made you chuckle to yourself, or made you absolutely ecstatic.  Go nuts! :)

Hasn't happened yet, but my daughter's high school marching band will be doing it's first public performance of the first two movements of its field show at halftime of the school's football game tonight.  She plays piccolo and flute and is the featured soloist in the second movement (she's a sophomore and beat out the section leader for the solo!).  She has worked really hard and, rather than being nervous, is excited for this (as are my wife and I)!

HEY!  Something to be proud of.  I hope it goes well for them!

What made me happy?  I bought a ton of used CDs lately, and the first batch from the UK came in.   Two Garbage CD singles, the second of two Iron Maiden The Wicker Man singles, and the two-disk Live From The Marquee by The Cult.

Just the fact that it is Friday and I got out of working on my day off tomorrow.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Another vote for the weekend. This means I could drink 32 oz of coffee without bouncing off of every surface afterwards. This rarely happens on a workday.

My flight while non stop bumpy, actually landed 40 minutes early.  Maybe the earliest I've ever arrived on a flight.  I'll take it, even with the non stop turbulence (it wasn't bad, just non stop).  Sadly what made me mad was the about 45 minutes it took to get my rental car from the "fast break" line, I guess I ended up losing that extra time.

Got to see and touch the Stanley Cup with my son. His team was able to get a team photo with it as well and we were able to skate on the Blues home ice for 15 minutes. Pretty awesome experience.

Will post pics when I get a chance

Today something very cool happened, and it's one of those unpromised gifts of recovery. As most of you know, I'm an active AA member, and today I was working with a new guy who is rather steadfast against the whole God aspect of the program, still clinging to the ideas of spirituality he grew up with (Judeo/Christian ethos). It's a common battle, and I'd hate to take a gather at how many drunks it has killed. I've been working with him for a few months now, and today finally broke through with an idea of spirituality, and spiritual principles, that he could grasp on to. Seeing his eyes light up in relief that he didn't have to be 'religious' and that the spiritual hoop of the program was big enough for him to jump through as well was unbelievable. I was worried about him, but now feel that he has a pretty solid shot at making it, and all it took was just being honest, open, and transparent. Not only will it likely save his ass, it shows him how to pass it on and save other drunks.

So yeah, pretty fucking happy.

Small thing but I was playing DT on TV and my brother and sister knew the songs :D it's just that our music tastes are somewhat different and they don't actively listen to prog so that made me happy. And my sister said her favorite song is ACOS so she isn't that much of a casual either :lol

Posted this in the NHL Thread also:

So, it was a pretty incredible experience yesterday getting to go out on the Enterprise Center's ice...sit with the Owner of the Blues, Tom Stillman, and get a team photo with the cup. They they let us have about 5 minutes with the Cup to touch it and take some quick pics.....then let the team skate on the ice for about 15 minutes. It was so cool. I had moments of some tears welling up as it was just such a cool thing to share with my son. I can say this....that Cup is WAY shinier in person that it seems on television. Anyway, here are a couple pics...

As they were setting up the team shot:

My kiddo touching the Cup for the first time: (notice the owner right there...in the top/back left)

I got down in there for a second as well:

Some more of the team:

Tom Stillman skating with the kids:  (I had the chance to speak with him for 5 minutes or so. Very humble man, very grateful for the fans...So Happy for him to get the cup. He's one of the 'good guys')

Kiddos Skating:  (I took my skates also. There was no way I was missing that chance to skate on the ice)

Finally...a quick team pic by the Benches:

:lol   I didn’t even mention it to him. I said my ‘thank you’s’ to him for how much he cares (dude walks around the stands at home games and chats with the fans....asks what he can do to make their experience at the game better etc etc) and how he always gives the management anything they need to keep the team competitive.

He’s a pretty cool dude.

My weekly Sunday weigh-in... had stagnated hovering around 182 for the last 9 weeks or so.  For some unknown reason (cuz I didn't start working out again until Friday after my PPUSA sickness), I dropped 2lbs and sit right at 180.  The number on the scale doesn't stuff me too much - it's how I feel and what I see in the mirror that matters.  But it provides a little objective gratification.

Rams stopped the Browns at the goal line!  That's good because my NFL teams almost went 0-3.

With all the negativity out there, it's time to revive this thread.  Let's hear the good stuff.  The stuff that made you want to stand up and cheer or cry happy tears or be thankful.  I know I can use the positivity and maybe others can too.

For example, I'm LOVING that musicians and artists are stepping up to keep our spirits up.  Neil Young, Pink, Keith Urban, Chris Martin and so many others.  More to come I'm sure.

Here are 15 on-stage Broadway musical productions you can watch from home.  (I would skip Cats but that's just me - hehe)  https://www.playbill.com/article/15-broadway-plays-and-musicals-you-can-watch-on-stage-from-home?fbclid=IwAR3tAITSamBYmi1EFa3y_eluATOdK0p-t2rLuh94OpidiV133HQdq0csqVE

And here's a list of 50 companies giving to their employees and the public during this crisis.  https://www.forbes.com/sites/blakemorgan/2020/03/17/50-ways-companies-are-giving-back-during-the-corona-pandemic/#10aff0e64723

The Seattle Symphony has been streaming performances online.

I know there are the random stories of assholery at grocery stores and such, but the few times I've been out at stores, everyone has been very polite and civil. Nothing is "usual" nowadays but clerks and others have been doing their best to make things seem like "business as usual."

What made me happy today? having woken up without a fever. Every day that passes is a day more that I probably didn't get the Covid-19 when I was not sealed at home yet.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Ditto.

I'm thankful for DTF as an outlet to have real conversations, real friends, and real fun (thank you Indiscipline) given all that is going on in the world

I'll also just leave this hear .... in a TBD whether it makes me happy or not.  I've been estranged from my father and brother for a number of years.  If this type of world crisis isn't a reason to reach out, I don't know what is.  So I'm going to send them each a text expressing my hopes for their safety and health.  We'll see how that goes.

Snuggling with my 4 year old daughter for a bit last night.  She's been big on watching Disney princess films, and we've tried some of the older ones (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty), but they're so dark.  Within the first 3 minutes of Snow White, the evil queen hires someone to kill Snow White and cut out her heart.  :lol  She didn't put that together, but the face in the magic mirror was rather scary looking.

So we moved onto some other ones - Aladdin was a hit and was only a minor bit scary.  But once she watches it a few times, she gets over the scary part.

Last night was Inside Out.  We're trying some Pixar stuff.  The topic was a bit too involved for her (individual emotions inside your head controlling your feelings) but she found it funny and seemed to understand things when I'd explain it.  My family of 4 was all laying in our bed watching tv (the living room carpet was wet from being cleaned) and it was a nice moment to cap off the night.

Hope that goes well. I spoken to my father twice since 2015, and last time was the summer of 2018. I've been thinking about contacting him to make sure he's ok, but having a hard time doing it.

But anyways this thread about happiness, Well I am literally the only person working on my floor (30 employees working working from home except me  ::) ) What's great about that is that I have Buckethead playing through some speakers while doing some work I have been postponing
