The Official Wilderun Thread v. Epigone (January 7, 2022)
« on: September 18, 2019, 11:35:19 AM »
Wilderun are a symphonic/progressive folk metal band from Boston, Massachusetts. They just released a single off their upcoming third full-length.

Far from Where Dreams Unfurl

It's an 8+ minute, highly melodic track with prog leanings that's fairly typical for Wilderun, but it doesn't seem quite as obviously folk as Sleep at the Edge of the Earth. Also no growls this time around.

I've heard of Wilderrun and even have them saved on my Spotify account. But I had no idea they were from Providence. Wow! That's right in my backyard.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I recall seeing that on their Bandcamp page but they've since updated it to Boston, which isn't that far off anyway. I edited the OP :)

Yeah, I was surprised by the lack of growls on that track. I'll be very curious to see if that trend continues into the full album or not. Digging the song a lot so far and Sleep at the Edge of the Earth is a fantastic album! :metal

And there's the growls. This is awesome.

It's good but it seems a bit more straightforward melodic death stuff than the last album. I also saw some comment comparing it to Opeth which I can kinda hear?
I'm tempering my expectations because I don't really expect a sleep at the edge of the earth level masterpiece here but also dammit new Wilderun

damn, nearly 70 minutes? i think that's the only disappointing-sounding thing about that to me, 'cause that's generally too long no matter how good the material, the last album was just the perfect length imo

Looking forward to this, actually.

Sleep at the Edge of the Earth is a masterpiece, so it's definitely going to be difficult to top, but I'm eager to hear what the band brings to the table this time around.
Hey dude slow the fuck down so we can finish together at the same time.

Listening to the album right now. So far, this may be my Album of the Year. Have to decide between this and Arch/Matheos’ Winter Ethereal personally.

I actually liked it from the first listen. Don't remember anything about it, but I was listening and reading a book at the same time. I'll spin this again during the weekend.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

^ My first listen was similar in that it ended to be semi-background, with me being able to pick up cool bits and pieces from tracks I didn't already know. The first listen of Sleep... was kind of similar for me IIRC.

It's definitely heavier and a bit darker in overall tone than Sleep, feels like folk has given way for a bit more death metal.

I've only had the one listen so far and I don't think I found it heavier, but I agree there's a bit less folk.

It sounded pretty great overall but obviously needs lots more listens!

Just listened to Far From Where Dreams Unfurl having read the AMG reviews. Liking it a lot so far.

Much standard trad metal melody and pomp but SO rich and lush. Will do back for more.

Ok I've given this album a good few listens now, and...

...it's pretty damn fantastic. I think I like it even more than the last one.

Sorry, didn't see that in time. Show was decent. Wilderun's sound was disappointingly bad compared to the other bands that played before them. One of the openers, Wandering Oak, was very neat.

Nah, the only time I can remember recording anything from a concert with my phone was when I took a video / picture of Tom Monda from Thank You Scientist because he shares an UNCANNY resemblance to one of my college friends, right down to the body language
