My ranking of the albums I've sent you so far is the opposite of what you've ranked them, I think

Olli-Pekka Laine (Amorphis) is a founding member of Barren Earth, and keyboards on that album are handled by Kasper Mårtenson who wrote the iconic Black Winter Day. I like to say that Forlorn Waves sounds more like Mårtenson than it sounds like old Amorphis

Well, now the Amorphis similarities make sense.

I personally wouldn't compare Dvne to Anciients, because I think Dvne are far better, but I can see what Thomas the Tank Engine means.. kind of. Glad that worked out well, even though I'm not your main participant. For the record, this is definitely an album I would have sent, and in hindsight I should have done so in the first round.

i can definitely see the comparisons though Dvne are more melodic. I could never get super into that album though, it's nice but never really clicked for me. The most recent Anciients album I would consider better by a decent margin.

Portishead - Dummy was so good, I listened to it during my flight previous Sunday and ended up buying the album next day in Amsterdam.

That was from Bizkit, next album is from Sacul, however I'll send it in 48 hours, can't do it right now.

Wow, late to this but I feel put on blast by this comparison 

In my own defense: I think if anything what I have is a very narrow band of scores, the 7-9 range. I almost never give 10s. I think I've given maybe four ever: The Great Escape, High Hopes, Sleeping at Last, and probably something in the championship?

it's super rare for something to feel like a 10 after only 5 or so listens though

Okay - so let me say it again, and now not as poorly worded: I actually enjoyed the latest Anciients album, but I haven't heard in perhaps two years. I think the Dvne album is better, because it's more varied and more melodic. I can see the comparison in the sense that the music overall is quite similar, but I personally wouldn't go 'hey this band sounds the same as Anciients', because - well - they don't (at least to me).

And of course you can make comparisons through a quality gap. Reading back my comment makes it look really silly.

Damn I don't know why I didn't sent Dummy in your last roulette, I'm glad you love it, and I agree, Roads is amazing (by the way, I recommend you the book about the record by RJ Wheaton, it also goes on about the whole trip-hop scene, it's a fantastic read) - great pick Luke. Portishead's discography is terribly short, but hope you have fun digging it.

I don't know either, seems like a fantastic and obvious (to me now anyway) overlap of our tastes.

I think if anything what I have is a very narrow band of scores, the 7-9 range. I almost never give 10s.

I'm the same. Actually more like 7-8.5 for me mostly. So far in this roulette there's only been one score above that range and one score below - both achieved by Clortho. That's part of why I changed my scoring system this time to base it on rankings.

I've been paying attention to who's coming out on top and admittedly should've taken notes from them. But I find it more exciting to send some off the wall stuff that ariich probably wouldn't get from other people. So hopefully the album I sent this time kind of finds some middle ground between the two ends

The fact that I squeezed a Randy Newman album into someone's roulette is basically mission accomplished for me so whatever

And I love that you do. Some of that stuff I love, and the stuff I don't still fills important gaps in my musical experience.

I'm still shocked you liked I'm Dead (But I Don't Know It). I told you I thought that one was outstandingly bad and I would never have predicted you liking it. I guess it's a fundamental issue I have with it; the style is not something I think Randy's ever been good at and it sounds almost as bad as his attempt to rap back in one horrible song on an otherwise stellar 80s record. Songs like I Miss You, Big Hat No Cattle, I Want Everyone To Like Me, Every Time It Rains, honestly everything outside of that song has something unique I like. (The Great Nations of Europe is a particularly choice song)

I thought about sending Trouble In Paradise, which has smash hit I Love L.A. on it. But if you're ever curious about listening to more Randy Newman, I would suggest jumping into this specific compilation which contains his huge hits and a bunch of other amazing songs that are satirical, comical, and poignant, sometimes all at once. Honestly, I think it's more consistent and varied than any of his studio outputs, a rare time I would recommend a greatest hits for new listeners over a particular record - but I thought a studio record was more appropriate for a roulette.
