I voted Petrucci, though I can easily see it going to Rudess

Huh, no Falling Into Infinity?  I would probably go:  Petrucci, Rudess, Portnoy, in that order, and it's REALLY close.  But Petrucci brings the metal AND the prog in a big way, and it's a great combination.

JR by a nose above JM.

I went with MP on this one. I think this is his best drumming in DT, and most creative imo.

If there was an 'all' option I would have went with that. This is their masterpiece and everyone is amazing. That being said I gave the edge to MP.

I chose JR.  He brings something really fresh and interesting that isn't on their previous albums up to this point.  Also, I remember from an interview with JR that when he joined the band he overwhelmed them with his ideas during the session period of this album.  And I think it shows, in a very good way.

Rudess. First album with the band and holy cow did he come in guns blazing.
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Petrucci. He is the sole writer on Regression and Through my words and the melodies from those are re-used all over the album

Petrucci, who eeks out over Rudess by a hair. They both have a lot of good parts, but imo Petrucci's parts are overall better on this album.

This is the album that made me fall in love with La Brie’s voice. I’ve come to love him on I&W but, in the early days, I was really there for Petrucci and glad DT had a singer who didn’t actively detract from the music.  I had tried to get into a few metal bands who just had unlistenable screechy singers and JLB sounded perfectly acceptable by comparison. SFAM is where he went from acceptable to essential. He will always be MVP for that reason.
