I need some new prog/neo-prog to dig into
« on: August 09, 2019, 06:55:33 PM »
Just what it says on the tin. Anybody got some good recs? And please do not recommend prog metal, I'm over it. And hey, maybe some of you will get turned onto something you never heard of from someone else. Happy recommending!

It's a great album, for sure, but better than Marbles? Nah, but as Chad would say, TASTES!

Southern Empire.

Get both of their studio albums right away. Really great stuff.

I will third that. Civilisation was by some distance my favourite album of 2018.

I am absolutely keeping my eye on this thread. I own every album that's been recommended so far.

A couple I'd like to throw into the hat, if I may:

Frost* - Milliontown
Rikard Sjoblom's Gungfly - Friendship
IQ - Frequency

Seconding the IQ recommendations, although my favourite is probably still The Road of Bones.

Karmakanic - Who's The Boss in the Factory?
Phideaux - Number Seven; Doomsday Afternoon, Snowtorch
Sieges Even - The Art of Navigating by the Stars
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

But hey, Wikipedia actually indeed says it's prog metal, so I guess you can scratch that, huh. I definitely think it's progressive rock.

Second the Karmakanic album.  Was kind of surprised the longest song on the cd was the first song

Another one that may interest you, though they are a bit happy go lucky feel good, is Kaipa. They got Per Nilsson destroying it on guitar and some killer male/female duet singing. Give Vittjar a spin, especially Silent Ballroom Band.

I will second that. I can't stop playing the 2 cds.

I'll 3rd it.  Same with King's recc for Moon Safari

RJ will back me here ... Mystery / The World is a Game.  Also, their 2018 release - Lies and Butterflies - was my Album of the Year.

Lies and Butterflies is a weekly spin.

I need to give that another go or two. I love Something to Believe In, and I like the opening track, but I haven't let the rest properly sink in yet.

Another album I bought around the same time is Random Acts of Liberation by Dilemma. A Dutch band who released an album way back in 1995, then seemed to disappear before emerging in 2018 with ex-Frost* singer Dec Burke and RAoL. The Inner Darkness is a magnificent mini-epic (12 minutes).

Very strong seconding for these suggestions that others have made:
 - Kaipa
 - Karmakanic
 - Moon Safari

I would also add:
 - Big Big Train
 - Dream the Electric Sleep
 - The Tea Club
 - Von Hertzen Brothers

Also, long time no see, great to see you here!

But hey, Wikipedia actually indeed says it's prog metal, so I guess you can scratch that, huh. I definitely think it's progressive rock.
There's probably one "metal" song on that album, and that's only if you agree later PTree is also metal. The prog metal tag is from their earlier work, so Super Dude should disregard it!

While we're at it, Subsignal is also a modern, "bright"-sounding prog rock band with a few metal riffs on each album but nothing too serious. I wouldn't say it's fully neo-prog but they spend some time in similar avenues.
