Hey, Bosk, sorry if you were meaning to make a final count at some point. But I was curious so I looked at the current top 10, and the results are fascinating:

8. S2N (20)
7. A New beginning (22)
6. Barstool warrior (23)
5. Pale blue dot (23)
4. Illumination theory (35)
3. Bridges in the sky (41)
2. At wit's end (42)
1. Breaking all illusions (52)

I am surprised to see Outcry finish that high.

Interesting to note that two of the four songs from the new album are ones that band has yet to play live.

And of the other six, four of them only got played on one tour.

I'm not. (Sshhh! :D) Seriously, I actually am not, because Outcry is one of their best ever pieces IMHO (the other longer pieces on ADTOE are as well IMHO)

So far the only two songs to break the 50 vote threshold are Breaking All Illusions (honestly, who didn't see that coming?) and At Wit's End, which seems to be a new classic.

Seems I'm pretty much falling into line here...

ADTOE
Bridges...
BAI
BTS (a genuine heartfelt ballad IMO)

DT12
IT

TA
A Life... (good effort at a love song)
A New Beginning (still the only go to stand-alone track... u know why...)
Our New World

D/T
BW
S2N
AWE

Actually it was a tough choice between some DT12 and TA cuts (Along for the Ride and The Bigger Picture, instead of ALLB and ONW...) and quite probably would even rethink it after posting. But WTF... they're two amongst their weaker albums anyway
I know perfect's not for real... I thought we might get closer

I've come in to the thread a couple of times to do this and then thought "nah it'll be too tough, I'll do it later when I can think about it more". Then in the end, it wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought.

A Dramatic Turn of Events:
On the Backs of Angels
Bridges in the Sky
Outcry
Breaking All Illusions

Dream Theater:
Illumination Theory

The Astonishing:
The Gift of Music
A New Beginning
The Path that Divides

Distance Over Time:
At Wit’s End
Pale Blue Dot

The ones in bold were the absolute no-brainers that instantly got selected. Just missing out were The Enemy Inside, Untethered Angel, Moment of Betrayal and Surrender to Reason.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

This is me lol. I've tried, but narrowing it down to 10 is very very difficult. Will try again.

A Dramatic Turn of Events (I love nearly all of the songs so I struggled to whittle this one down)

-Build Me Up, Break Me Down (yup, fight me)
-This is the Life (liked it a lot at first, now I feel it is one of DT's absolute bests)
-Bridges in the Sky (again, not my favorite at first but such an amazing opener)
-Breaking All Illusions (no brainer)
-Beneath the Surface (no words, just a perfect, non traditional closer to a perfect album)

DT12

-The Bigger Picture (another of DT's bests)
-Along for the Ride (far superior to The Spirit Carries On, wish they would play this at nearly every concert)
-Illumination Theory (such a great ride and the ending is epic)

The Astonishing
-none, although it does have three really good songs on it (Life Left Behind, Our New World, Gift of Music)

Distance Over Time (another flawless album but I struggled on which ones I would consider instant classics or bests. Ask again in a year)
-At Wit's End (another no brainer)
-Pale Blue Dot (quintessential DT if you ask me. Subject matter, dark yet illuminating melodies, etc)

All I can say is, sometimes I do these things just as a fan for my own curiosity.  Other times, I pass the info on to the band.  For the latter, JP is always interested in these sorts of things.  Sometimes, he takes the data into account very quickly.  Sometimes, he files it away for future use.  Sometimes, it's "We can't do that because _____."

ADTOE
Bridges - great opener and my initial favorite from the album, I didn’t think they missed a beat
BAI - #1 contender coming in on their 11th album, nice!!

S/T
— too shrill sounding, I can’t tell the songs apart, nada

TA
Overture - best “instrumental” of the MM era
Gift of Music - great sound imo
Life left behind - another song with great sound, single worthy
X Aspect - best deep cut

D/T
FitL/BW - killer combo, hard to separate these two, riffs are back
AWE - #1 contender on their 14th album, nice!! Wish the end silence was shorter and the end floor mike was longer, so great and classic DT
PBD - fun, wonky, unique

So, top #3 would be:

Breaking All Illusions - classic DT by any standard - my only 'complaint' would be that the production sounds a bit muffled.
Illumination Theory - even better live
Barstool Warrior - to be honest it is mainly the "promises made..." part that made this top 3. Those lines are fantastic and the rest of the song is good too, so.. JLa approves!

Not entirely sure of the order...they're all great. I have shuffled them around several times now.

-------------------------

In no particular order (listing them chronologically just for the sake of it):

On the Backs of Angels - starts off a bit slow, but by the time we reach half way I am digging this hard without even realising it!
This Is the Life - I'm a soft man
False Awakening Suite - Well done instrumental!
The Enemy Inside - cool single!
The Answer - Simple, short, sweet, super nice to listen to.
Untethered Angel - Another cool single!
Pale Blue Dot - Classic and modern at the same time. Twists and turns and riffs and rocks.

edit: noticed many folks have "A New Beginning" from T/A as a favorite. I just put it on and ... hm, it's good. I must have turned off T/A long before I got to this one, I can't say I've heard it before!

In order listed:

On the Backs of Angels - Just really works as a fun metal song
This is the Life - Extremely underrated ballad
Breaking All Illusions - Because obviously
Beneath the Surface - The most depressing song of all time
The Looking Glass - Yes it's essentially Limelight II. Still really good
The Bigger Picture - Based on the results, criminally underrated
Illumination Theory - Maybe my favorite of the epics
Barstool Warrior - Hits me in the feels
S2N - This song is so fun!
At Wit's End - Again, because obviously
Take a chance you may die
Over and over again

So far, it seems that BAI, AWE and IT are the three most liked Mangini era songs. Not surprised by this at all :metal

A little surprised to see IT so high honestly.

3 of the first 4 songs that came to mind are off ADToE

Bridges in the Sky
Breaking All Illusions
Beneath the Surface

The 4th being At Wit's End.

From there it was:

Outcry
Fall into the Light

From there it got a little harder, which I guess shows how I feel about ADToE and DoT, and about DT12 and TA (though as an album I like TA quite a bit).

Hi there! Loooong time lurker (like... Pre-ADoTE lurker) and thought this would be fun to vote on, so... Here goes!

ADoTE:
Lost Not Forgotten - I love the choruses and the instrumental section in the middle
Bridges in The Sky - Honestly it's only on here because they opened with it on Dramatic Tour. So much energy!
Far From Heaven - I LOVE FFH as the intro to BAI
Breaking All Illusions - Because, well, yeah.

TA:
The Gift of Music - only song that I really connected with on TA. I tried a lot, too!

DoT:
Untethered Angel - The only single they've put out since I became a fan in 06 that I stopped everything I was doing and just rocked out for a while. This was also at like 5 in the morning while I was getting ready for work.  :metal
Barstool Warrior - Cool classic prog feel, with some lyrical content I can kind of identify with right now. Minus the alcoholism.
S2N - Just a great rocking song with a great chorus. There's almost no time wasted on this track. Plus the Outro is like a way better version of TDEN.
Out of Reach - I enjoy a good ballad apparently. The Satriani style solo part is nice, too.
Viper King - I really like that they did a fun song.

Honorable Mention:
Illumination Theory from 6:32-14:01 is some of the most exciting stuff DT has ever done in my opinion, I just can't stand listening to the Self-Titled because it's just so harsh on my ears. Plus, I don't really care for the rest of the song,  :lol

And that's all I have to say about that.

Hello, Long time lurker here as well.  I became a fan a few months after ADToE was released.  This was a very difficult poll for me, 10 just isn't enough  :).  Here is my list:

ADToE
On the Backs of Angels (the song that made me fall in love with DT)
Bridges in the Sky

I love the whole album exept Outcry.

DT12
The Bigger Picture
Illumination Theory

This album is kind of a half and half for me.

TA
The Gift of Music
A New Beginning
Moment of Betrayal

Perhaps my favorite DT album, or at least in my top 3.

D/T
Barstool Warrior
S2N
At Wits End

Really good album, but I hope DT has finally got the shorter songs out of their system now :)

Othere songs I wanted to vote for:
Build Me Up, Break Me Down; Lost Not Forgotten; The Enemy Inside; Along for the Ride; Dystopian Overture; The Answer; A Life Left Behind; Chosen; The X Aspect; The Road to Revolution; 2285 Entr'acte; Hymn of a Thousand Voices; Our New World; Untethered Angel; Fall into the Light; Out of Rach; Pale Blue Dot.

The Mangini era has been a very good group of albums for me. :metal

Really good album, but I hope DT has finally got the shorter songs out of their system now :)

Same here :lol
I mean, I really like that their songwriting has been much more focused on the Mangini era, and that they aren't writing long(er) songs for the sake of writing long songs... but... I'd LOVE to have a 20+ (even 30+) minute song on DT15. It's time.

The Mangini era has been a very good group of albums for me. :metal

This too :metal

I agree, a 30+ minute song, would be very cool.  I would even hope that they take a break in touring for a few months and release an EP with one or two epics on it.  I would love it even more if Bosk suggested it to them  :xbones.

I also hope they do some longer songs on the next one.

As much as I enjoyed D/T (and they nailed the shorter songs much more than DT12) it does feel like on the last few albums they've "held themselves back" in some regards. I'd like to see them go crazy again and not worry about what the detractors think in regards to lengthy or "wanky" instrumentals. To me, this is part of what sets DT apart from your standard band.
ADTOE was a nice balance, and if they can make longer songs alongside shorter songs that are not just ballads (e.g: S2N) that would be amazing.

I still feel the longer songs on D/T had more to give with another 2 or 3 mins - in particular Pale Blue Dot - awesome song, but ends prematurely without a real sense of climax.

A Dramatic Turn of Events
On the Backs of Angels (tbh I think it's the one song that perfectly captures that "DT" sound, also I like the lyrics)
This is the Life (Honestly one of their best ballads. I'm finding that I'm appreciating the ballads more as I get older)
Bridges in the Sky (just rockin', great intro, cool solos)
Outcry (this song is wild lol, and it feels like it fits the chaotic nature of a revolution)

Honorable Mentions: Lost Not Forgotten (mostly for all the piano throughout the song, synth solo brings it down)

Dream Theater
The Bigger Picture (the BEST lyrics DT have ever done imo, and the music is really nice)

Honorable Mentions: False Awakening Suite (short, sweet, to the point)

The Astonishing
Lord Nafaryus (villains always get the best songs)
When Your Time Has Come (infuriatingly catchy, even by the album's standards)
Three Days (blast beat dixieland c'mon, also villains get the best songs 2: "he's not evil, he's just misunderstood" boogaloo)
Ravenskill (yes)

Honorable Mentions: The rest of the album pretty much. It IS my #1 album of all time still. The only songs not included here would be Whispers on the Wind, Losing Faythe, and the NOMAC tracks.

Distance Over Time
S2N (dat bass, and also dat rest of the song)

Honorable Mentions: Paralyzed (very modern metal track, very commercial friendly, very well done), Fall Into the Light (\m/, also dat middle section mmm), Room 137 (Paralyzed, but slightly proggier), At Wit's End (has honestly really grown on me, and that "deafening deafening" part is still A+ DT material)

Honestly hella hard to list a Top 10 for the decade. DT have been on fire this...well, these past two decades. You could replace most of the list with some of the honorable mentions and I wouldn't even complain.

Man I agree.  This album has soooo much good music on it.  I just finished listening to it again today.  And for the first two years after release it was almost the only album I listened to from ANY band.

What I find shocking is there are (atm) 7 voters, and only 5 for Breaking All Illusions.   :omg:

Same.
I picked 4
And two were from the new one and only because I felt guilty about only picking 2.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

Hi All, have been lurking for a while, time to jump into the fray.

I voted my 10, but three are absolute standouts for me:

Bridges in the Sky:  Cranked it on the way to work today (prolly why I decided to stop lurking haha) - what an incredible song.  Vicious riffs, face melting solo, soaring chorus, and a cool eastern vibe (Tibetan throat singing FTW), just 11 minutes of pure heaven.

At Witts End:  This song is a masterpiece, with many of the elements of Bridges in a tighter package, just phenomenal.

Breaking All Illusions:  Come on - epic, theatrical, heavy, groovy, just genius.

Imagine if Rush had been creating music this vibrant so late in their career.  DT gives us "At Witts End", Rush gave us "Wish Them Well"...

Welcome to the forum! :metal
It sounds like, "ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk." Instead of the more pleasing kick drum sound of, "gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk."
