As much as I dislike Tom Cruise as a person, I'm kinda jacked to see this - maybe in IMAX.

Haha, a friend of mine from college (actually, he's a townie friend of a friend of mine from college) with zero irony thinks Cocktail is one of the greatest movies of all time for the simply reason of Elisabeth Shue.

Most of them.  But either the movies themselves, or her performance in them, or both, are so unmemorable that even after you mentioned them, I have no recollection of her being in them.

Aside from most of the ones mentioned here and Hollow Man, I cannot recall seeing Elisabeth Shue in anything, but I think she had a pretty good career, good enough to where I remember there being some question as to if her asking price would be too high for her to appear on Cobra Kai.  Most of the other principle living actors from the original Karate Kid films haven't done a lot of notable things, so they were all probably just happy to get a paycheck to play the same role they did decades ago, but Shue was a success and probably could have overshot what they were willing to pay.

I saw the trailer; I don't know.  It looks like it MIGHT not be bad, but there also seemed to be too much fan service.  You got the token Goose reference, you had the picture of the (fat) Val Kilmer...  and you had all the token quippy lines from Maverick as he flies his plane through Angelina Jolie's butt crack or something equally preposterous.   And yet, it looks like it MIGHT not be bad...

Part of my problem is Tom Cruise is now one of those actors that I can't see on screen as anyone other than "TOM "I do my own stunts and Scientology paid for this face" CRUISE!"  He's turning into Jack Nicholson in that way.

It's funny despite all the weird things i've heard about Cruise over the years that has never played over in the movies i've seen with him. In my mind he always deliver as an actor despite everything else, atleast to me.

Miles better than the original, this one actually has a plot.  Could have done without the last 20 mins or so, the film gets extremely stupid after (without spoilers) the mission is complete (and the mission is basically Star Wars).

I was honestly kind of overwhelmed by how good this movie is. There was actually a grandma sitting next to me who before the movie told me it was her third time seeing it. At first, I thought it was kind of funny, but after I totally got it. Tom Cruise is a shady dude but he's assembled a production team that is simply second to none. This film is both an adrenaline-pumping thrill ride and genuinely emotional at times. Just damn.

Great movie, but I can't help but think in reality, an unmanned drone would've been perfect for that mission.
