I actually really like Tom Cruise.

And he's not a great actor in the way that Robert Deniro or Al Pacino are. I'd say he's more like an Errol Flynn or something. He's just super entertaining and has a lot of charisma.

That said, he has the MI movies that have become amazing versions of "WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING THIS TIME?!?"

I wouldn't want all of his other movies to do that too. This is starting to feel less like Top Gun and more like "HE'S FLYING A REAL JET?!?!"

When I see a famous actor in a cockpit flying a jet, I just assume they film that in a realistic cockpit set with a green screen.

When I see Tom Cruise do it, I assume he learned how to fly a fighter jet and flew the damn thing.

I can't recall a Tom Cruise movie I didn't like. Maybe 'Eye's Wide Shut' but at the time I watched it I was so Stoned I couldn't see straight. All of his movies have top dollar production behind them.....they typically have a great ensemble cast and are generally well written and entertaining. He's everything an action star should be....plus, the dude CAN act.

I'll see this movie opening night....probably with my group of buddies. We will look like massive tools all heading in and sitting together and it will be great.

Yep, a film centered around fighter pilots isn't normally my thing either, but it's so fun and well done that you can't help but enjoy it.  The flying part is the least best part of the film anyway.

As for best Cruise movies, I think A Few Good Men is his best (great movie and a major classic), and aside from Top Gun, I also like Rainman a lot.  Cocktail gets slagged a lot, but it's a fun late 80's flick.

A Few Good Men is a damn good movie. Infinitely quotable.

Hard to think of my favorite Cruise film, it might be that one, even though I don't think of that as a Cruise film really, the cast top to bottom is elite (well, Demi Moore is a bit grating, but Galloway was supposed to be that way. One of those times I can't tell if it is the actor annoying me, or the actor is doing such a good job portraying an annoying character).

Similiarly, I can't think of a Cruise performance I felt was subpar, or a Cruise film I didn't find at least somewhat enjoyable.

I also put his performance in The Firm way up there near the top as well.  And I really liked Far and Away as well (yeah, I guess '92-'93 is my favorite Tom Cruise era).
