ROUND 5 RESULTSEvermind: IQ – The Road of BonesI heard a lot about this band here, don’t know how it didn’t get sent yet or how I never decided to check them out myself. As you said, this hardly feels like 9 minutes, it’s really enjoyable throughout and buildup isn’t forced, comes naturally. There are some catchy bits I just loooove, especially on those keys melodies and of course vocal melodies are great. Singer’s voice is kinda creepy, even more when I know what the theme of the song is
Tbh I didn’t expect it to get this heavy near the end, always though this is more just prog rock but it sounds metal
Your best song so far and one of the best song of the roulette.
11 pointsKwyjimbo: All About Eve – Road to Your SoulYou finally did it! Your best song so far, easily. Reminds me of Sacul’s submission few rounds back (The Cardigans) even though this is a bit older, darker and maybe even more dreamy. I was lost in it from the first time I heard it, it’s catchy, emotional, dreamy and I like her voice. The break in the middle of the songs wasn’t necessary imo and that’s my only bigger complaint. Can’t wait to hear more of their song, hope it’s in same style.
10.5 pointsPuppies_On_Acid: Teramaze – AnhedoniaUsually, I don’t like it when progressive metal doesn’t breathe but it works here. I guess because the riffing is great and vocals are a bit better for this style than it is usually case with progressive metal. His voice is pretty high but still maintains a healthy dose of edge. If you’d like, check the Croatian band Chaos Addict, it’s more thrashy but kinda reminds me of this and their (ex-) singer is the best Croatian singer (Russell Allen meets David Coverdale). I like how catchy this is as well, will definitely check them out further even though I’m not into this style lately.
9 pointssenecadawg2: Kevin Gilbert – Song for a Dead FriendIs this song sent in every roulette? Because I definitely saw it multiple times, not sure if I ever listened to it before. Firstly, this is really an emotional song. Is there anything more emotional than a song about the death of a friend. Some lines really hit it hard. However, I had hard time getting into it, like there was something missing for me. In the end, I really enjoyed the song but not as much as I’d like or you’d expect me to. It’s unexplainable, I still miss something. You’re still getting a nice score but I think you expected better, sorry.
8 pointsTAC: Moonrise – Flying in Empty LandsThis definitely hits that sweet spot for me in terms of the style. It actually sounds like something I heard before , not just the style but actual melodies, can’t really say what it sounds like. Other than that, it’s really enjoyable song, even though not the most original. I especially like this kind of vocal melodies, almost musical-like. Instrumental break isn’t my favourite because I don’t like keyboard solos so I feel like rewinding most of the time lol. But yeah, pretty nice song.
7.5 pointsKattelox: Chris Joss – Tune DownThis jazzy piece took some listening to get into for me. After all, it’s actually less jazz and more funk. The thing about funk is that while I appreciate its musicianship and technicality I most often find it a bit cheesy if instrumentals can be cheesy. Bass in this one is super cool, loud and not at all over the top. Some subtle brass is great addition and guitar nice as always in funk. Why I don’t enjoy it even more? Because this always seems like a background music for me and nothing more. Would like to try an album in this style though.
6 + 1 points = 7 pointsStadler: Keane – BedshapedDefinitely reminds me of band Travis. Big time. Travis seems a bit more poppy (maybe too poppy in a bad way) and also, I like this singer’s voice better. Is this the most original thing ever? No. But it’s emotional and nice enough piece with great chorus and great singing. Have nothing else to say tbh.
6.5 pointswolfking: Soilwork – As We SpeakAh, Soilwork. The band that was always kinda out there as it was pretty popular around some of my friends but I don’t think I ever heard one note of it. However, I heard singer in some other stuff (sent you Chaos Addict in your roulette). Don’t like his growls that much. Melodic singing in chorus is much better, more in style I usually like. Chugging guitars isn’t my thing as well but anything that isn’t that is better
nice solo and nice song, but nothing more than that, sadly.
5.5 pointsLethean: Voyager – As the City Takes the LightI got Misery is the Only Company in my v2 and didn’t like it that much. This one is a bit more in my style. However, I can’t get into singer’s voice, there’s just something off putting about it. I guess it’s his timbre, doesn’t work for me. Also, I most often have hard time getting into this style of progressive metal but I actually enjoy some of it so I think I’ll check these guys further, can’t promise I’ll like it.
5 pointsCyril: Amy Shark – Drive You Mad
Let’s start with negative: it’s easily the least enjoyable song you sent so far. I don’t like the instrumental. Her voice is fine, just fine, a bit on a dark side, I like that. Chorus is really catchy, other parts not so much. This one is either forgettable or I need more listens to get into it. But when it comes to pop I most usually get into it right away.
4.5 pointsSacul: Darkside – HeartThis one’s much better than some of your previous submissions but still somewhere in the middle of the park. It’s that type of song where I can’t really find a thing I hate/don’t like about but still feel like it’s forgettable. And if few days of listening isn’t enough I don’t know what is. However, as I said, it’s not bad at all. I like grooviness during some parts more than atmosphere, too bad this is mostly built on atmosphere. In the end, a bit bland, but not that bad.
4 pointshome: Bonobo – Break ApartAnother indeterminate song from you
It’s kinda nice but also a bit boring to me. I’m not that into chillout music and trip-hop tends to be hit and miss, I tried many bands and even the most popular ones get boring fast. This is just a bit better than stuff that plays on the radio tbh, sorry. Not the thing I’d listen to on my own.
3.5 pointsFlyingBIZKIT: XTC – Making plans for NigelOh, god… how to say it… I kinda hate this song. It’s that song that gets in your ear even though you hate it Yes, it’s catchy and I like catchy but I find most things here off putting. Backing vocals are just horrible in my opinion, don’t like the melodies and repetitiveness. The tone is just too happy in a wrong way for me. Sorry, it’s the least good song I got in this roulette.
