Never got into Sonata Arctica.

I did buy the live album with the wolf on it. I thought it was ok. I then bought Unia which I thought blew big fucking chinks.

See Lethean knows what's up. Y'all need to replay Unia until you get it. Way more interesting than most of their power metal. MOST. Not all...

Following this thread, just haven't had much to say so far.

I love Ecliptica, but I'll admit I only enjoy the occasional song from Sonata Arctica after that. I respect the band for continuing to evolve and progress their sound, but unfortunately it's evolved into a sound I don't really care for. Alas.

Attempting to listen to this Sonata Arctica album....I've never actually listened to a full song of theirs, ever.  And now I know why.  I'm just not a fan of Tony Kakko's voice.  Even on the Northern Kings discs, I'd rather hear Marco or JP than Tony.

Oh well.

Damn, that's a shame. I think his voice is amazing. Marco's type of voice is all right occasionally, some of the songs out there with him singing are bangers (Where the Rainbow Ends, Master of the Pendulum etc. plus his Nightwish stuff). But there are other power metal singers who sound like him - the guy from Dreamtale, and the guy from Excalion - that are super nasally and very hard for me to sit through. Marco always reminds me of those guys.

I tend to like singers with a lot of character, and with that usually (but not always) comes a distinct voice. I guess that's why I don't like a lot of American bands; I dislike the way most American singers sound in metal. Very few have appealed to me (Michael Smith from Cellador, Robb Graves from Lorenguard, Matt Barlow etc.).

Thinks I'll skip these entries for Strato and SA, and wait until the others come up later / higher up the list.

Revisiting the UYI topic from last week, upon listening to both albums I offer the following:

God Tier - November Rain
Top Shelf - Civil War, You Could Be Mine, Live and Let Die, Bad Obsession, Pretty Tied Up
Good Stuff - Don't Cry (both versions), You Ain't the First, Don't Damn Me, Right Next Door To Hell, Knockin on Heaven's Door, Get in the Ring, Estranged

The rest ranges from 'forgettable' to 'should've never made it past a demo'.  Don't Cry would be better if not for the final 20 seconds of whining.

Dawn of Victory ... it made my Top 50.  https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=29431.msg1141465#msg1141465

The lyrics are so epic on that album.

"Mighty warriors from the silver hills march on led by golden winds"
"Oceans of fire are blasting the throne of the demons"
"I will light your evil kingdom and your heart will burn in flames"

Katt's Top 50 Albums v. Six days at the bottom of the ocean [#32]
« Reply #548 on: June 20, 2019, 09:22:10 AM »
32.
EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY
THE EARTH IS NOT A COLD DEAD PLACE

Post-Rock

released November 4th, 2003 via Temporary Residence

1. First Breath After Coma [9:33]
2. The Only Moment We Were Alone [10:14]
3. Six Days at the Bottom of the Ocean [8:43]
4. Memorial [8:50]
5. Your Hand in Mine [8:17]

THE EARTH IS NOT A COLD DEAD PLACE is

Michael James (Guitars / Bass)
Munaf Rayani (Guitars)
Mark T. Smith (Guitars)
Christopher Hrasky (Drums)

Something different! This could be one of the most emotional albums on the list and it doesn’t contain a single lyric.

In the realm of post-rock, a lot of bands love to take their time and have no problem playing double-digit length tracks for the sake of mood and atmosphere. Looking at you, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, although I love them regardless. Explosions justifies their song lengths. Each track ebbs and flows with elegance, and roars to life when the story it tells reaches a climactic point. And that’s what each song is, a little story in its own, told by three guitars and a drummer. There’s a love for reverb and tremolo picking to create a tidal wave of emotion in the form of a wall of distortion. The songs often layer tremolo picking of higher notes over a rhythm guitar that hammers away at the same note; sometimes a third guitar part will continue picking the gentle motif as all this continues, while the drums crash and roar around it all.

That’s a good description of what the album is. To me, it’s something you just need to hear, you need to experience it - and you need to be patient with it. Not so much as other post rock bands that are in no hurry to get to the finish line, but every track here is over 8 minutes, and like a story, you need to let it roll in its own time. There are strong melodic motifs and a lot of emphasis on bringing out the emotion in the melodies. “The Only Moment We Were Alone” cruises along with a gentle, happy sleigh bell rhythm underneath a beautiful, clean, wintery guitar riff, and towards the end just when you think it’s ending on a quiet note, it comes screaming back with full force, raging briefly before dying out, like a sonic supernova.  It’s such a lovely piece of music, it’s my #1 favorite post-rock song.

In Summary: Gorgeous instrumental music. Put on some headphones, relax, and let this music soak in. It’s one of the most beautiful albums I can think of, and I can’t praise it enough. I’ve spent countless late nights driving through the flat countryside out here playing this album and it’s the perfect “alone” music to listen to. It’s a musical friend that I’m always willing to listen to.

I'm not sure what Post-Rock music is and that's why I figured I'll give a listen here, but I listened to a couple songs and wasn't very interested.  I could see this just playing in the background and being fine but there's like, just no meat to it for me to ever find myself wanting to put this on to actively listen to while driving.  That's just me though, I need more energy in my music.

Maybe you (who are certain you'll hate it) should just listen to one of the shortest songs?  The word "post" is used for a lot of different things and not all of it sounds the same.  You might not like it, and that's cool.  But maybe you will, or you'll like part of it.  Or you still won't like it but i'll give you an idea of something you do like that you could use in Kattelox's next roulette. :P

Was this aimed at me?  I don't think I was certain I'll hate it, I think not knowing a thing about it (including the genre) is what made me want to try it out.  The third song, Your Hand in Mine, was my favorite of the three (and the shortest although not a short song).  But this is just not my cup of tea.
