Hi everyone, I'm Aaron and I'm a DT fan.  It has been 2 days since my last DT song.  I... I relapsed over the weekend.  Saturday night was rough.  Started out slowly enough, listening to some favorite tunes off of D/T.  As usual, things escalated and I lost control.  Last thing I recall was rifling through my music collection at 3:00am, intent on listening to all the instrumentals in chronological order.  I awoke on Sunday with my headphones tangled around my neck, ears throbbing and CD jewel cases and DT album liner notes strewn about the floor.

It occurred to me that Dream Theater is one of only a handful of bands that drive me to this level of fandom, and none of the others are progressive metal.  DT is my fave, but I also seem to love specific bands from a variety of genres: some of my other favorites are Cheap Trick, Skinny Puppy, Propagandhi... you get the idea.  I guess I'm a fan of specific artists more than genres.  Other popular progressive metal bands have never done anything for me.  I've tried to get into Fates Warning and Symphony X to no avail.  With the exception of Operation: Mindcrime, I can't get into Queensryche either.  As far as modern prog metal is concerned, I've briefly listened to bands like Periphery and BTBAM but they also lack some sort of magic 'lightning in a bottle' that DT seems to have for me.  I do like lots of prog rock (Camel, Rush, Pink Floyd), lots of metal (Megadeth, Anthrax) and some bands that combine elements of metal and prog into a their sound (Nightwish, Coheed and Cambria, late-era Death, Opeth).  But none of those would be considered straight "progressive metal".

I guess I'm asking for recommendations in a round about way, but also genuinely curious about what others on this forum think of progressive metal as a genre and whether their love begins and ends with DT like mine does.  I'm new here, and I hope this isn't a noob post.  Thanks!
PBR me ASAP

Leprous.

Welp, that's it. Not too keen on any modern bands. And Dream Theater released their best albums with Kevin Moore on keys.

When I first glanced at this, I thought you wrote "Electric Cattle" and thought that was a rather odd name for an album....

I'm not as passionate about any band - regardless of genre - as I am with DT.  The closest in the past would have been Muse when they were my favourite band long before DT. I was on their forums, listening to B-sides, bootlegs etc.

I do love a few other bands that are in a similar vein to DT though, most have already been mentioned: Haken, Symphony X, Vanden Plas, Redemption, Bad Salad, Myrath. Plus some that have a slightly different take on progressive metal like Tesseract and Leprous.

Tool (and yes, they are Progressive Metal, even if they have a completely different approach to just about everyone else)
Sieges Even (especially their last 2 albums, although their other ones are good too)
Riverside (their first 2 albums and their 4th album are amazing)
Shadow Gallery (pretty much all of their albums except their very first are great)
Devin Townsend (in all of his various shapes and forms (except his 2 drone albums....))
Threshold (not really a bad album in their discography)
Angra (mostly Temple of Shadows for the more progressive metal approach)
Pain of Salvation (their first 5 albums are all essential listening in my opinion)
Vanden Plas (all great albums)
Redemption (They kind of lost some steam after their 4th album, but those first 4 are awesome)
Moonsorrow........(oh wait, that's not prog metal...... :neverusethis:)
aka Puppies_On_Acid

Coheed and Cambria have been the band I've been pretty consistently obsessed with over the last 10+ years. I consider them to be my favourite band as I just never tire of them and adore almost every release (even the ones I don't adore, I still really love). Plus going to see them live is an experience like no other. Coheed and Cambria fans are extremely passionate and when you see them it feels like EVERYONE is 100% invested in the performance.

Symphony X, Shadow Gallery, Ayreon I'd say. But none at DT's level.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Riverside (their first 2 albums and their 4th album are amazing)
More than any other, I would say THIS! They might be veering more towards prog rock with their more recent albums, but their earlier albums are more metal, and their fourth album (Anno Domini High Definition) in particular is metal and killer with no filler!
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

And to answer the OP, Threshold, Leprous, Angra, Fates Warning.  If you want to stretch the definition I'll add Riverside and Katatonia too.

HI Aaron; I'm sort of with you, maybe even a little more extreme, in that I LOVE LOVE LOVE Dream Theater (more then than now) but when I hear "Prog Metal!" my eyes usually glaze over.   Of all the band listed here, I think Devin and Tool are the only one's I listen to at all (though Evergrey and the Ayreon stuff really clicked when I heard them in my roulette).

Hey just because you're wrong, doesn't mean we have to deprive other people of good music :jamaritard:

I absolutely love me some Threshold, but they definitely have some clunker albums. I can’t stand Wounded Land for most songs, and I think I’ve spun Extinct Instinct in its entirety once and haven’t again in 15 years. Much of For the Journey is pretty subpar, as is about half of Critical Mass and Clone. The rest, however, is prog metal riffing goodness.
