Spock's Beard Survivor 2019 - Results & Discussion
« on: April 06, 2019, 11:15:37 AM »
Hello and welcome to my 4th Annual(?) Spock's Beard Survivor, for the 2019 season! Here I will post the album results, and eventually, the finals!

To start off with, I'll post the track lists/options for each survivor, then as we finish each album, I'll update the track lists with the final results.

As usual, the top two songs on each album go to the finals, and each album's 3rd place song will move to Consolation, with the exception of Snow, which will have it's 5th and 6th place songs move into Consolation, while it's top 4 songs will move to the Finals (as I have done with previous double albums in other Survivors).

Because of that, the Consolation Rounds will consist of 14 songs (2 from Snow, and 1 each from the other 12 albums) and the Finals will consist of at least 34 songs (4 from Snow, and 2 from each of the other 12 albums, plus the top 2 of the Consolation Rounds and the top 4 from the B-Sides/Bonus Tracks Survivor*).

Some points to discuss if anyone has any opinions one way or the other:

1- I was wondering if anyone would think it better or worse if I split up "A Flash Before My Eyes" into its six separate tracks for the Octane survivor. The last three times I've done the SB Survivor, it was done as one track, and I don't think anyone really objected to it, but I was wondering if changing it would make any difference for anyone here?

2- Should I continue to include the covers in the Bonus Tracks/B-Side/Non-Album Songs survivor? I did last time, and there's only four of them. Like Snow (and other double-albums I've run in the past), this B-Sides Survivor will probably start with multiple-vote/multi-elimination rounds to help narrow it down pretty quickly, and help voters knock out multiple songs they probably don't like as much as the others, rather than drag the whole thing out for 25 rounds.

3- Japanese Exclusive Bonus Tracks. There are three that I am aware of, two from SB9 ("A Hypernova Explosion" and "Red Sea") and one from Noise Floor ("Save Our Souls"). Should I bother including them, since I'm sure I'm one of the few SB fans that actually owns or have actually even heard them?

Nice! Looking forward to this. First time competing for Noise Floor, if I'm correct. As for the questions:

1. I think Flash should be listed as one song. If you split Flash, you have to split the other NDV-era epics, because what's the difference?

2. I guess on the same principle of consistency, you have to include the covers in the non-album survivor, because of Beware of Darkness, the George Harrison cover that's the title track of their second album.

3. I've never heard those songs, so...eh? I dunno...

Definitely one song. I imagine you'll do Healing Colours, As Far As The Mind Can See, and Sid as one track too right?

I think the one difference between AFBME and those other indexed-epics is that AFBME, if I recall, had multiple and different writers for its separate tracks, while THCOS, AGNS, and AFATMCS were all written by one (or two) people - Neal, Nick, and Meros/Boegehold respectively. That was my only line of thinking with regards to separating Flash into its seven tracks, but if most people want it kept together as one, I will leave it as such! I just wanted to throw out that possibility!

And yes, RoeDent, this is the first SB Survivor to feature Noise Floor. The last time I did it was in 2016, just several months after The Oblivion Particle and The First Twenty Years were released.

The last three times I've done the SB Survivor, it was done as one track, and I don't think anyone really objected to it, but I was wondering if changing it would make any difference for anyone here?

One track please, even though the band plays parts of it live, without doing the whole song.

I don't know half the B-sides, so I will abstain for the most part of the Survivor, only to show up in the last round to make sure both Their Names Escape Me and Falling for Forever win.

I have never heard them, but I haven't heard a lot of the bonus tracks.

I can't make up my mind regarding the suites.  :lol

Whichever way you choose to approach them has its arguments, so you might as well trust your judgement.

The Light's Final Round's Results:
The Light 6 (60%)
The Water 4 (40%)

1. The Water
2. The Light
3. Go The Way You Go
4. On The Edge

Well, in a slight twist to the last two times I've run this survivor, "The Light" places second instead of first, with the epic track "The Water" placing first! It's no big deal, though, since both songs will move into the finals with "Go The Way You Go" going to the Consolation Rounds.

Glad to see The Water win out. The Light is certainly more iconic, but I think The Water is just the more impactful song overall.

Ahh, yes, thank you. It's been a couple years since my last survivor, so if I forget to do anything, like updating the Consolation/Finals lists as each album finishes, please let me know. I'm still getting back into the swing of things running this!

Beware Of Darkness' Final Round's Results:
The Doorway 3 (27.3%)
Walking On The Wind 8 (72.7%)

1. The Doorway
2. Walking On The Wind
3. Thoughts
4. Time Has Come
5. Waste Away
6. Beware Of Darkness
7. Chatauqua

Looking back at the 2016 and 2013 Survivors, it looks like the top 4 on this album ranking was the exact same, with the bottom three rotating around a bit. Seems pretty consistent to me, I suppose "The Doorway" and "Walking On The Wind" will always place 1st and 2nd! :lol

1. Flow
2. Harm's Way
3. The Good Don't Last
4. June
5. In The Mouth Of Madness
6. Strange World
7. Cakewalk On Easy Street

The results here are about as proggy as you could get - the three longest songs placed in the top 3 spots!

Day For Night's Final Round's Results:
Day For Night 7 (70%)
The Healing Colors Of Sound 3 (30%)

The album's closing epic take the top spot, but both it and the opening/title track move on to the Finals!

V is wrapping up and Snow is just starting! Once V is over, I'l begin with Feel Euphoria!

V's Final Round's Results:
At The End Of The Day 3 (27.3%)
The Great Nothing 8 (72.7%)

1. At The End Of The Day
2. The Great Nothing
3. Revelation
4. Thoughts Part 2
5. All On A Sunday
6. Goodbye To Yesterday

Looking back at the 2016 Survivor, the top 2 remain the same, and in the same position, and so both of V's epics move on to the Finals!

In the coming weeks, we will get through Snow, and the first couple NDV-era albums! If you haven't spun those in awhile, definitely give them some love because those NDV albums have some great stuff in them, too!

Feel Euphoria's Final Round Results:
Ghosts Of Autumn 4 (40%)
A Guy Named Sid 6 (60%)

1. Ghosts Of Autumn
2. A Guy Named Sid
3. Onomatopoeia
4. The Bottom Line
5. Feel Euphoria
6. East Of Eden, West Of Memphis

I forgot to update this home thread with FE's final round results, so here they are. Octane should be done in a couple days, as well as Snow. After those albums are done, we will move on to the final two NDV-era albums, the self-titled ninth album Spock's Beard and the tenth album X.

I can't believe how quickly we're flying through this. We only started in early April! Usually for a band with this many albums, a survivor would take around six months to complete.

Odd to see Onomatopoeia beat The Bottom Line which I consider a much superior song in every sense even though O is still pretty great.

In the last couple years I was doing survivors regularly, I did two albums/rounds at a time, and i think I may have even done them daily and not every other day (the last Rush Survivor might have been daily).

I like to get through them two at a time, especially if there isn't much discussion going on. But I've been doing 2-day rounds this time because of work the last 2 months. Things will slow down once Finals begin, but by then I will switch to 1-day rounds.

Snow's Final Round's Results:
Made Alive / Overture 4 (50%)
I'm Dying 4 (50%)

01. Made Alive / Overture
      I'm Dying
03. Stranger In A Strange Land
04. Solitary Soul
05. Open Wide The Flood Gates
06. Long Time Suffering
07. Made Alive / Wind At My Back
08. Devil's Got My Throat
09. All Is Vanity
10. Open The Gates Part 2
11. Wind At My Back
12, The 39th Street Blues (I'm Sick)
13. Love Beyond Words
      I Will Go
15. Welcome To NYC
16. 4th Of July
      I'm The Guy
18. Freak Boy
19. Second Overture
      Carie
21. Devil's Got My Throat Reprise
22. Looking For Answers
      Freak Boy Part 2
24. Reflection
25. Snow's Night Out
26. Ladies And Gentlemen, Mister Ryo Okumoto On The Keyboards

Well, sometime today, an 8th voter must have voted for "I'm Dying" because it tied up the results, so we now have a tie for first, and because it doesn't matter which one ends up on top for Finals, I've forgone the tie-breaker round. Both songs definitely deserve it, though. For the curious, "I'm Dying" previously placed 12th in 2013 and 11th in 2016, so jumping up to a tie for first is a HUGE deal for the song! In fact, it's only the 2nd time a song from Disc 2 has made it to the Top 6 of Snow, with the other one being the closing track "Made Alive / Wind At My Back" placing first in 2013. Otherwise, every song that's survived this album for Finals and Consolation has come from the first disc!

Currently underway, we have the last two albums of the NDV-era, which should run through the majority of June, and then by the end of the month, we will move on to the first two Ted-era albums, which I am excited to see how they go!

Octane's Final Round's Results:
A Flash Before My Eyes 0 (0%)
There Was A Time 7 (100%)

1. A Flash Before My Eyes
2. There Was A Time
3. The Planet's Hum
4. NWC
5. As Long As We Ride
6. Watching The Tide

With a unanimous vote, TWAT (unfortunate acronym) was voted out and places 2nd, but still goes on to the Finals with the (predictably placed) top song, "A Flash Before My Eyes".

Currently going are the last two NDV-era albums, both of which should wrap up by the end of next week. My work/sleep schedules are changing this week, so my update-times might change from evening to morning, depending on my work schedule. To ensure everyone gets their votes in, I'll continue to make the rounds 2 days long.

It must be a credit to the album as a whole that the rankings over the years are so inconsistent. There's no single obvious top song for Snow, so any song has a chance of winning in its year. Heck, the Overture came top! I can't see that happening on many other concept albums. Crazy!

X's Final Round's Results:
From The Darkness 6 (85.7%)
Jaws Of Heaven 1 (14.3%)

1. Jaws Of  Heaven
2. From The Darkness
3. Edge Of The In-Between
4. The Quiet House
5. The Man Behind The Curtain
6. The Emperor's Clothes
7. Kamikaze

With a 6-to-1 vote, FTD is voted out and places second, with JOH placing first for the album. Looking back at the 2013 and 2016 results for X, the results are largely similar, with the exact same results in 2016, while in 2013 the 5th and 6th place songs were swapped. This is perhaps the most consistent of any album rankings through this survivor compared to previous runs (well, this album and maybe the first two SB albums).

We will be wrapping up SB9 by next week as we head into the Ted-Era albums, so if you haven't spun BANDS, TOP or NF in awhile, definitely get those listen as if you aren't as familiar with them as the previous ones!

Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep's Final Round's Results:
Submerged 5 (83.3%)
Something Very Strange 1 (16.7%)

1. Something Very Strange
2. Submerged
3. Afterthoughts
4. Waiting For Me
5. Hiding Out
6. A Treasure Abandoned
7. I Know Your Secret

My my, how far "Submerged" has come. In the 2013 Survivor, its first year, "Submerged" was the first song out! In 2016, though, it jumped up to 2nd place, so it seems it's retaining it's popularity among the fans here! Likewise, "Something Very Strange" placed first in 2016 so it returns to its position, though it was 3rd in 2013. Honestly, this is such a good album over-all, I'd be happy with almost any ranking. It'll be interesting to see if the Top 2 retain their title in the next 3 years (when I inevitably do the 2022 SB Survivor  :rollin )

The Oblivion Particle's Final Round's Results:
A Better Way To Fly 2 (50%)
Disappear 2 (50%)

1. A Better Way To Fly
    Disappear
3. Tides Of Time
4. Hell's Not Enough
5. To Be Free Again
6. The Center Line
7. Get Out While You Can
8. Bennett Built A Time Machine
9. Minion

With only four votes, the final round results in... a tie! Both were moving on to the Finals anyway, so no need for a tie-breaker here!

Up next, the last couple rounds of Noise Floor, and figuring out what to do with the B-Sides/Bonus Tracks/Non-Album Tracks.

Noise Floor's Final Round's Results:
So This Is Life 3 (50%)
One So Wise 3 (50%)

1. Somebody's Home
    One So Wise
3. Somebody's Home
4. To Breathe Another Day
5. What Becomes Of Me
6. Beginnings
7. Box Of Spiders
8. Have We All Gone Crazy Yet

With our six votes, we landed on a tie for the top two, which is fine because both will move on to the Finals anyway! With all of the studio albums wrapped up, we move on through Consolation Rounds (12 of them), then the Finals, which will take a couple of months, unless I switch to one-day rounds.

After seven long months, we've reached the END of the 2019 Spock's Beard Survivor! "The Light" takes first place, which it previously held in 2016 (but was second in 2013), while "The Doorway" ends up taking the Silver Medal (though in 2013, it placed first and then third in 2016).

What a wild ride this has been, and it's been fun getting back into doing a Survivor again, after not having done one in a few years. I hope everyone who participated had a good time voting and discussing, and I hope the Survivor helped you revisit some of the great songs of the mighty Beard! If we're all still around in 2022, I'd love to do this again, and hopefully by then, the band will have another album out!

As for what's next, I've thought about doing my 4th Neal Morse Survivor, covering his solo prog albums starting with Testimony, leading up through the Neal Morse Band albums. The last time I did one in 2015, he had just released The Grand Experiment with the NMB, so we'd have two massive double albums to get through and add to the Finals! If you guys are interested in a Neal Morse Survivor, let me know! I'll have to wait until next month to start it up, but it'd be a lot of fun to do as I haven't listened to those albums in quite some time.

Thanks again to everyone who took part! I hope you all enjoyed this as much as I did. One more SB Survivor in the books!

Before I commit to a Neal Morse Survivor, however, I *just* had the idea of doing a Flying Colors Survivor!

When the first album came out, I did a single-album Survivor for it, and not long after Second Nature was released, I did one for those two albums. Now that Third Degree has been out for nearly a month or so, it's about time I do another FC Survivor! I'll probably start it up in early November, and that would run through the rest of the year, giving me time until January to get ready for a 2020 Neal Morse Survivor.

Yeah, I think that's what I'll do next - Flying Colors Survivor from November through December/Early January, and then Neal Morse Survivor (Prog Albums Testimony-The Great Adventure) in early 2020 (probably running through the first half of the year). After that, it might be time to do a Transatlantic Survivor!

I would LOVE a Flying Colors survivor!  :metal

Also, thank you SO MUCH for running the SB survivor, it was a long but fun ride. Also, it's odd to think that SB never quite surpassed the first song on their first album...  ;D

So. After 24 years and 13 albums, the first track from their first album is the champion.

Thank you for running this, M! It's been fun!

And I would be so up for a Flying Colors Survivor.

:lol The irony isn't lost on me, it astounds me that it's held up this long, but it seems it may forever be a fan favorite! Even up til a few years ago, Neal was still playing bits of it live, so even 2 decades after its release, the song still resonated with him. It's very powerful and such a trademark SB song that it's hard to beat. Personally, I was rooting for "The Doorway" to win, but both are quintessential SB songs in my book.

And yes, I will be doing a Flying Colors Survivor after my vacation next week, so expect the first round to begin on November 3rd or 4th! Before then, I may throw out the Results & Discussion thread to get things going. Until then, anyone who wants to participate should revisit the first two albums if they haven't heard them in awhile!
